MINING-TOOL.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Louis F. Hess, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ansted, in the county of Fayette and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful MiningTool, of which the following is a. specification.
The device herein disclosed is a cutter head for a mining machine, the cutter head preferahlybeing provided with a spiral rib. .[n the rib are mounted a lurality of tool holders, tools being carried by the tool holders. Ina device of this type, it is obviously desirable that the tool and the tool holder shall not rotate upon an axis trans verse to the axis of the cutter head, when the cutter head is rotated upon its own axis. There are no known mechanical means whereby a polygonal hole may be fashioned practically 1n the cutter head, to the end that the tool holder and the tool may be pre vented from rotating, as above mentioned, and the present invention aims, as one of its objects, to rovide a means whereby a tool holder may e mounted in a circular o cning in the head, means being provided w. creby the tool holder will be prevented from rotating in the circular opening, when the cutter head is rotatedabout its own axis.
Another object of the invention is to provide novel means whereby the tool which is in the tool holder, may be braced and sustained while the cutter head is being rotated. It is within the scope of theinvention to provide a cutter head and a tool holder, their.
construction being such that the'tool holder may readily be removed without disturbing the other tool holders in the head.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination-and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the recise embodiment of invention herein disc osed can be made'within'tho scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The invention further includes a tool holder denoted generally by the numeral 11.
comprising a shank 1:2 and an arm 14 which extends at right angles to the shank .12. The shank 19. is of circular contour, as indicated at 15, so as to register closely, and with a' driving fit, in the opening 10. The shank 14: of the tool holder is at polygonal cross section. The shank 1dregisters closelybetween the secondary shoulders'fijand 7. to the end that the shank 12 may notrotate in the opening 10. The lower t'ace' of the arm i l rests upon the'base 9 of the slot 5.
The shankl2o'f the tool holder "is equipped with a socket 16 which is of phl-ygonal cross section. Mounted in the socket 1G and conforming, closely thereto is a cutting tool 17, held in place by a set screw 18 which is threaded to the end of the arm 14:. The tool 17 is provided with an overhangin portion 19, the cutting edge of which is in icated at 20. The overhanging portion 19 may rest upon the primary shoulder 4, the shoulder 4 constituting a support for the portion 19.
From the fore oing it will beseen that when the cutter head 2 is rotated upon its own axis, the tool. holder 11 and the tool 17 will be prevented from rotating upon an axis transverse to the axis of the cutter head 52, because the arm 1d of the tool holder is engaged between the secondary shoulders 7 and 6, and particularly because one side of the arm 14 abuts'against the shoulder 6.

A- cutter head for a mining-machine, having a spiral rib provided with a transverse depression definin a'primary shoulder, there, being a slot exten ed circumferentially pf the rib and defining spaced secondary shoulders in the depression, there bein an opening in the rib, between the secon arv shoulders, and adjacent the primary shoul der; a tool holder including a shank disposed in the opening and an arm engaged between the shoulders5'and a toolmounted in the tool holder, thetool comprising an angular portion for which the primary shoulder constitutes an abutment.
