UNITED) STATES PATENT onmon,
ALEXANDER ,CSEKI, OF \CDEVELAND, OHIO.
SWIMMING IDEVIGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER osam, a
subject of theKing of Hungary, residing at Cleveland, Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Swimming Devices, of
one structure embodying my invention,;and
in said drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective lVieW of the :leg and ifoot of a personwearingthe device, Fig.2 is a horizontal section; on the line 22 of Fig. 1, with the paddle in a half open position,jFig. 3 is a front elevation, looking in the direction; of the arrow 3. in Fig. 2,
' and Fig. 1 is a side elevation, looking in the direction of the arrow 4, in: Fig. 2.,
Referring now more specifically to the dc:
vice illustrated, the support :or, leg piece 10 is provided with straps ll and, 12, near the top and bottom endsyforaattaching this to the leg justbelow the knee, andat the ankle, respectively, and ,belowthe strap 12: is a hinge joint 13 and anaextensionplece 14, to, which is loosely attached, a connection 115,, also loosely attached: to a toe piece 16 the latter being provided with a toe strap 17.
Attached to the leg piece 10,by suitable hinges 18 (two or more ofwhich are provided). is, a propelleronfin l9 capable? of: swinging in a horizontalplane through an arc of 90 or thereabout. Further motion backward being prevented by the leg piece 10, and further motionforward being :pre: vented by the angle pieces 20, of whichlany desired number may be provided. The an-, gle pieces are short strips of rigid metal, or
other material riveted to the leg piece at one end, and bein bentinto the form of a right angle as clear yshown in Fig. :2; These may be made integral withithe leg pieceif soldesired'thereby eflecting a savmgof material: and weight, as well as labor. These should extend out from, the leg: piece jone o'r :two inches, in order to support the strain of the fin or paddle 19, during 113116 backward or pushing motion of the foot.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for,
five cents each, by Washington, D. 0.?
Application filed October 14, 1912. Serial No; 725,769. I
The entire device is preferably made of light andstrong materia ,such as aluminum, aluminum bronze, or late uered sheet steel. The blade will,
Patented Apr; 22,1913.
refera ly be provided? around itsedge wit a small rimor beading which will efiectually strengthen the entire blade, so that it can be made of ver thin, and consequently of very light weig terial. The straps 11,12 and 17 will of any suitable flexible material such as:
webbing, heavy tape or leather. These straps are provided with suitable buckles,
as shown.
By means, of this device, a person; sup
ported in a substantially vertical position in the water, asjby means of a life preserver, maypaddle himself to any desired distance,
motion of the legs those close or foldback against the:legs., By means of the hinge joint 13, and the loose riveted joints between 14 and 15 and between 15 and 16, the motion of the ankle and foot are not impeded, lso that a pcrson canwalk while wearing these devices.
It is notedthat the device shown in the:
drawing is :for the right leg and another,
inade exactly the reverse is used forthe left eg.; 1 r
What I claim is A. swimming device comprising a leg, piece, a blade hinged thereto, capable oft opening and jclosin with the backward and 5 forward motion 0 the leg, respectively, a
stop to prevent further motion of said blade 2 when it reaches a predetermined posit1on,; a a
toe piece and flexible metal connections from the leg piece thereto, said connections comprising hinge joints acting in two planes at substantially ri ht angles to each other, and 3 means forattac ing; said leg and toe pieces 1 to the wearer.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name in the a presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 11th day of October, 1912.
ALEXANDER CSEKI.
