SAFETY-GUARD FOR BAND-SAWS.
Specification of letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 22, 1913.
Application tiled February 7, 1912. Serial No. 675,989.
A further ,object of this `invention is to` provide means for adjusting a guard or shield vertically relative to the table of a band-saw.
A further object of this invention is to provide Vmeans for opening fand closing a guard or shield relative to a band-saw.
My invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of; elements hereinafter set forth, pointed out in `my.
claim and illustrated by theaccompanyng drawing, in which-- Figure 1 is an elevation showing my `improved device mounted relative to a bandsaw as required for practical use. Fig. 2 is an elevation at right angles to Fi .i 1. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the indicate line 3--3 of Fig. 2.
In the .construction and application of the devices' as shown, the numeral 10 designates a table, 11 a frame head, 12 a wheel, 13 an arm, 14 a sheave, 15 a balanced bar, 16 a cord and 17 a wei ht for balancin said bar, 18 a band-saw an 19 a guide carried by the bar and partially embracing the saw.
All of the elements thus far recited, together with a set lscrew 20 adapted to engage and fix the bar 15 at any desired elevation, are common and Well known in the art' to which this invention relates and are here shown conventionally. The bar .15, in articular, may be of any desired sha e so ong as it retains the characteristic o carrying the guide an'd being vertically adjustable toset the guide at desired lspacing relative to the work on the table.
Hinge- members 21, 22 are fixed to the bar 15 labove and below the slide-bearing2),
through which said bar is adjustable, and extend horizontally therefrom parallel with and across the forward portion of the band saw 18. A guard plate 24 is fixed to the outer end portions of the hinge- members 21, 22 parallel with and adjacent to the forward portionof the band-saw 18. A pintle or hinge-pm 25 is mounted pivotally in outer end portions of the hinge- members 21, 22 and a pin 26 is mounted through said pintle and normally rests in notches in said hingemember 22.` A thumb nut 27 isscrewed on the lower end of the pintle 25 and normally locks said pintle against upward movement such as would relieve the pin 26 from its seat in the notches of'the. hinge-member 22. Hinge members 28, 29 are fixed to pintle 25 between the first hinge-members and spaced therefrom and extend laterally from Said pintle. In closed position, the members 28, 29 extend across the toothed edge o f the band-saw 18.` A guard plate 30 is fixed to the hinge- members 28, 29 and extends vertically adjacent to and in. front of the toothed edge of the band-saw 16. The lower end portion of the guard plate 30 preferably is oi'set inwardly into close relation to the toothed edge of the band saw, for convenience in obstructing as little as may be the pattern lines on the work to be sawed from the vision of the Sawyer. The guard plates 24 and B0 are spaced from the table 10 sufficiently for the work to be sawed to be inl serted beneath them. A handle 31 is mounted on the guard plate 30 and extends across the 4hinge-member 29.
In practical use, the guard or shield ele .ments may be adjusted vertically, in respect `plate 30, the thumb nut 27 is unscrewed slightly and the plate, hingemembers 28, 29, pintle 25 and pin 26 are raised by lifting the handle 31, after which said elements maybe lturned through an are articulating on the axis of the pintle, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3.V
I do not desire to be-understood as limiting myself to the precise construction illustrated and described as the same may be moded in many particulars without departing from the invention disclosed.
I claim as my invention- A safety guard for band-saws, comprising a bar arranged for vertical adjustment, hin e-members fixed to said bar and extend- 5 ing aterally therefrom in spaced relations, a
pntle pivoted in said hinge-members, interengaging means .between said pintle and hinge-members, other hinge-members fixed to and. extending laterally from said 4pintle 10 in spaced relations to each other and to the Signed by me at Marshalltown, Iowa, this 7th. day of December, 1911.
