Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented A r.22,1913.
Application filed November 9, 1812. Serial 80. 730,407.
is a specification.
b wooden middl e portion My mvention relates to improvements in tent pins, and more particularly to a nondestructible tent pin. v p The object is to produce a tent .pin of standard sha e'and proportions havlng an outward mid e portion of wood and a metal point and driving end together with means for relieving-the outward middle wooden portion of'undue shock incidental to drivmg. i
In hard ground it is next to im ossible to drive tent pins more than two or t ree times before they are so split and injured that they are unfit for use. ooden ins have been made with metal points an metal bands shrunk on their driving ends, but in a shortwhile the are so damaged as to be useless, the troub e'being that the wood between1 the metal oint an the driving. end band is gradua y split and mashed,due to'the lack of compresslble resistance in the wood. An allmetal tent pin is objectionable for many reasons, the princi al of which being the excessive 'Wei ht. t also found that. the guy ropes o the tents ;.chafe less, over wooden surfaces than metal. In my improved pin have secured the strength ,of an all metal pm with onlyaslight increase in" wfiiht over the \oldwoeden peg; I accomp this supplying a ,hght I hollow agtedtosocket into a middle point-portion an a metal driving end,.the two latter elements being connected by a lighi central metal stem portion ha screw aded ends to engage the said meta point and metal drivingend. Byfthis a1";
rangement all resultant shocks due to driving are taken up by the central metal stem,
simply as a filling piece.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is'a side elevation of the pin,.and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional viewthereof. 4 r
Referring more specifically to thedrawings, 1 indicates the metal drivin end or cap, 2 the central metal stem, 3 t e metal po1nt,'44 screw threads on either end mi the central meta-l stem by which means the point and driving ends are connected, and 5 the hollow wooden middle portion having reduced ends 6-6 mounted in the hollow portions of the two metal ends.
I do not wish to confine myself to the specific construction herein described but on the contrary I will expect to make such changes in proportion, size, construction, etc, as d0 not de art from the spirit of the inventlon as set orth in the annexed claims;
1. Apinconsistin of an outward middle portion, a shock a sorbin'g central stem passing entirely through its length,.and a points metal end piece and a metal driving end or cap detachably mounted upon the ends of the said stem.
2. Avpin consisting of an outward wooden middle rtion, a central metal stem passing longitu inally throu h the said wooden middle portion and swing exterior screw threaded ends, a hollowimetal end point and a hollow metal driving end or cap each having threaded seats, mounted upon the threaded ends of said stem.
