IIIILIP `R.` HARRISON, `or IcIIIcAoO,` ILLINOIS, AssIeNoR `To CHICAGO RAILWAY: EQUIPMENT COMPANY, or CHICAGO; ILLINOIS, a` CORPORATION or ILLINOIS.
FINGERfGU'ARD: CLAMP.:
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 22,1913.l
To all 'whom it may concern Be it `known that I, .PHILIP B. Harrison, a citizen of the United States, residing at city of Chicago, State of Illinois,` have invented a certain newtand useful Improvement in `Finger-Guard Clamps, of which the following is afull, clear, andexactdescript-ion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains` t0 `make and use the same, reference beingfhad to the accompanying drawings, forming` part. of this specification, in which- Figure l is a front elevational view of my improved finger guard clamp.` Fig.12 is a side elevational Iviewshowingthe clamp in position on the lbrake beam. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of lthe clamp with its guard finger `in position.`
This invention relatesto a new and useful improvement in;finger guard clamps for brake beams, the object beingto construct a clamp which will `fit on; the `compression member of the beam where the space between the truss rod and the compressionmember is limited, as `for `instance in cases where turnbuckles are used to secure the truss rod in position. It is obvious, however, that my improved clamp can be usedto advantage o-n other forms of beams.`
I-Ieretofore it has` been the practice to make separatefinger guard clamps foreach end of the beam and this necessitates a right and left hand casting. The present design permits of the use of one patternonly, there,
being two seats for the `guard. `finger `and clamping means for `holding the guard finger in either seat. In this manner the clamp may be secured at either end ofthe beam and a guard finger employed in either seat so that a right and left `hand guard finger is thus arranged on the beam.`
In the drawings, l indicates the member of the beam on which the guard finger is mounted, and 2 is the; clampingmember` clamping` member is held securely on `the beam member. One of the lugs 3 is pref# erably provided with a strengthening rib 3ft.
The clamping member 2 on one of its sides I is provided with two finger seats 5 for `the reception' of thelguard finger 6. The-metal between the seats 5 is preferably removed as shown `in Fig.` l so as to enable the outer wall of the seatsto be moved inwardly in clampingthe finger in position. This inward movement of the outer wall is eected by means of a bolt 7 preferably introduced from the beam side and having a nut 8 on its Outer end which, when turned down, will clamp the guard finger in position.` In this I `65 ployed `for `either the right or left hand guard finger, but it is obvious that instead manner, atsingle clamping nut may be emof `having, a continuous `outer wall and `a single clampingmeans, that the outer wall` might beldivided and a separate clamping means provided for each division and clamp` ing finger.`
What I claim is:
1. Aclamp for guard lingers comprising means for attachment to a beam, `recesses for receivingeither a right or left hand guard finger, and means independent of `the beam attachiiigflevices for clamping the guard finger in position.
2. A clamp for guard fingers comprising movable, and means independent of the beam attaching devices for moving said outer wall inwardly to clamp the right or left hand` guard finger in position.
3. A clamp for guard fingers comprising a a casting `composed of separable jaws for embracing apart of the brake beams, seats for `right and left hand guard fingers, there means for attachment to a beam, seats for; receiving` the right and left hand guard fingers, thetouter wall of said seats being` beng a space between said seats whereby signature n the presence of two witnessed,
the outer wall of the seats is movable, and a this sixth day of August, 1912.` clamping medium arranged between the l seats for forcing said outer wall inwardly to PHILIP' B' HARRISON' 5 olamp'ether the right or left hand finger Witnesses: A-
guard in lts seat. E.V T. WALKER,
Intestimony whereof I hereunto affix my M. F. HUNTQON Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patent:
