Description

R. D. LANCE. APPARATUS FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF METALLIC ZINC.
APPLICATION FILED THE. 26, 1913.
Patented Apr. 15, 1913.

. a citizen of the French Republic, and a res1- v mum DEN-IS taxes, or LA anaemia-commune,wanton, assxenon 'ro Hanan I FERBERE, O1! PARIS, FRANCE,
srrana'rus FOR THE msnumc runn i015 METALLIC zinc.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Roena'r Dams Limos,
dent of 6 Rue de Sartoris, LaGarenne- Colombes, Seine, France, have invented certain newand useful Improvements 1n and Relating to Apparatus for the Manufacture 'by which this zinc of Metallic Zinc, of which the following is a complete specification.
' This invention relates to devices for the manufacturing of metallic zinc and zinc white.
a device for reducing zine oxidw ich will accomplish the reduction at a comparatively low cost.
. A further object of my invention is to provide a device in which the retorts are lo-.
.cated in chambers, the temperature of'which may be readily controlled so as toobtain the. I
most suitable temperature for carrying out portions of the rocess.
A further ob ect of my invention is to provide a novel form of apparatus for accomplishing the above mentioned objects.
Other obyects and advantages will appear in the following specification and the novel features of the device will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The device is primarily designed for the treatment of spongy zinc oxid. The process oxid is obtained forms no part of the present invention but will be set forth ina divisional application, this application being restricted to the apparatus for carrying out the process.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings formingppart of this ap plication in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through the device, Fig. 2. is a transverse section along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring particularly to' Fig. 1 I have shown therein a retort a open at both ends, and which receives cylindrical l extensions b I)". These extensions are each provided with a lateral orifice c c openinginto a connector d. (see Fig. 2) or d which leads to ,a bottle f or f entering by its lower part g into a tubular collector h. Theicylindrical extensions b b are shut off from the exterior by means of plugs 11 i held by means of the stirrup clamps 7' y" respectively. The plugs ii are made of a refractory substance, The
Specification of Letters 2mm. Application flled February 26, 1913. Serial No. 750,774.
Anobject of the invention-is'typrovide cylindrical extensions 5 b, the connectors (Z d, and the bottles f are individual to each retort a. The connectors (l d and the bottles f are filled with thin pieces of refractory substance which increases the condensation surface for the zinc vapors. It will be noted that in this device the whole of the apparatus in which the reduction of the metal, its distillation, and its condensation are effected, is fixed, the condensation and the evaeuationof the liquid metal being continuous.
The draining and refilling ofthe retorts a.v
is effected as in the retorts for illuminating gas, namely by simultaneously opening the closing plugs 11 a" of said retorts on both sides of the furnace. The discharge of the sediments and the introduction of a fresh charge is generally done by means of devices Patented Apr. 15, 1913..
used in this industry or in others having the Nevertheless before proceeding to open the retorts a mixture of carbon monoxid and nitrogen (C(H-N) is injected through one of the plugs and this drives away the zinc vapors filling the retort. The gas is obtained by passing air over a highcolumn of incandescent coke, the purification of the CO being obtained if it is same object.
necessary. In order to raise the effective charge of the retortto a maximum :1 mixture of spongy oxid with carbon is compressed under very high pressure so as to form briquet-s having the form ofthe retort. vantageous that these briquets should be perforated and contact so as to facilitate the elimination of zinc vapors.
The whole apparatus is heated electrically bv means of resistances r, 0", 7', r constituted by metallic wires which are infusible at the temperature required by the different parts of the apparatus, this temperature being controlled by rheostats (not shown) provided at suitable parts of the circuit. .The electric heating by resistances is obtained for example by means of such apparatus as that disclosed in the U. S. Patent to- Lance, de Bourcade. and Schmidt, #679,973, of August 6, similar means for accomplishing the same object, it being understood that the platinum resistances referred to in the said patent may be replaced by resistances made of nickel iron or of iron according to the part It is ad.
grooved on their faces in 1901, or by any other of the apparatus in which it-is used. This resistance heating device applied to these apparatus form part of the invention in so. far as it permits of regulating the tempera: ture in the various parts of the apparatus and, of keeping the temperature constant during operation.
- retorts) are located in chambers n nalong orifices may be opened heating chamber, a conduit connectin said collector arranged to the sides of the furnace, said chambers being closed by means of doors a c disposed in the walls of the chambers n n opposite to the openings of the cylindrical extensions 6 so as to permit of draining and charge, ing. "Vents 0 closed when desired by cones m'of refractory material permit of passing,
' into these chambers a part of the hot gases from the central chamber. that shown at p may be prothe closures of these to ermit the admission of cold air. By suita ly. adjusting the. vents 0 andthe orifices p it is possible to produce a temperature whichis best suited of the furnace Orifices such as vided in the doors and or the effective condensatlon. The retort a has been considered as lengthened by the' cylindrical extensions 6 b. This feature; of extending the retort facilitatesthe ex-, pansion of the apparatus as a whole, but it 1s obvious that the retort a could be made integral with the extension?) Without de-: parting, from the spirit of the invention Any ordinary refractory material may be; used for the. retorts a; s nce pure oxid does: not attack them. In placeof theseretortsj carbo'rundum tubes may, be used, these bein better heat conductors and therefore e ecting great economy of fuel. Y a I claim: f
