' To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I,.Josnr1r Drnnoit, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Sault Ste. Marie, in the county of Chippewa and State of Michigan, have'invented a new and Improved Window-Platform, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. i
This inventionrelatesto temporary scaffolds or the like, and has partlcular reference to a means to ermit access to the outside of `a window or any purpose such as cleaning, glazing, painting, etc.
Among `the objects of the invention is to produce a structure `of the character indi-` cated which is not only safe and reliable as to strength and operation, but which may readily be manipulated by one person from the inside of the building.
A further object of the invention' is to provide a device whichis'adjustable `in such a manner as to make it adaptable to various widths of windows or to walls of different thicknesses or forms.`
The foregoing and other objects of the invention will hereinafter be more fully described and claimed and illustrated1 in the drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a plan view `of `the device shown in position upon a window frame; Fig.` 2 is a side elevation of the same, the building `being shown in section substantially on the line 2-'-'2 of Fig. l; Fig. 2a is an enlarged detail; Figs. 3 and 1 are plan and edge views respectively of the plat form; and Figs. 5 and 6 are side and plan views respectively of a special fitting here inafter described.
As illustrated especially in Fig. 1, the platform comprises a main frame 10 of substantially rectangular form and comprising end rails 11, an outer rail 12 and an inner rail 13. These rails may be made of any suitable rigid and comparatively light material andare connected together each to veach in a rigid permanent manner. As
shown, these rails are preferably constructed of standard gas pipes of hollow construction. The inner rail 13 is connected to the inner ends of the end rails 11` by means of right angled unions 14, and the outer rail 12 is connected to the outer ends cylindrical `of'the end rails 11 by means of Ts 15, the rail 12 extending at its ends be ond said Ts. At `1,6 are shown apair o rods having their outer ends connected by screw threads i or the like to pivot members 17 journaled upon the inner rail 13. Said members 17, however, and the rods connected thereto are freely slidable alon the rail 113 toward or fromeach other. ach of said rods 16 is adapted to extend inwardly across the Window sill 18 `and the bottom of the window frame 19 and is screw threaded from its innermost end `outward`l to a considerable distance toward the rail 13. A hook 2O made preferably of broad flat nnetal and adapted to engage the inner edge of the frame 19 is provided with a lug 21 adapted Ito slide freely over the threaded portion of the rod 16 and will be held in proper position thereon by means of a hand o erated nut 22 threaded upon said rod. T 1e inner face of thel hook 20 may be provided wth felt or other material to revent damage to the window frame 19 by a rasion or the like.
A pair of braces 23 .are connected` by means of special fittings 24 which are `pivoted upon the ends of the bar 12 outside of the Ts 15 aforesaid and may be held thereon by caps 25 or in any 'other suitable manner. Each fitting 24 comprises' a barrel 26 which is rotatably fitted upon the rail 12 betweenthe adjacent T 15 and the cap 25. It also includes a barrel 27, the axis of which is in a plane at right angles to the plane of the axis of the barrel 26 and through it is extended adjustably the adjacent brace 23 to which it is adapted to be clamped by a thumb screw 28. The braces are limited in their movement outwardly `with respect to the frame 10 by means of stays shown in the form of chains 29, the upper end of each of which is connected to an end rail 1l and its lower end is connected to the adjacentbrace 23. These connections `preferably consist of clamps 30 adjustably con nected to the several bars. The lower end of each brace 23 is provided with a foot 31 preferably pivoted or swiveled thereto and provided with a corrugated face adapted to engage the outer surface of the Wall 32 of the building.
At 33 is illustrated a suitable form of platf orm which comprises preferably a series of metal bars 34 having end hooks 35 adapted scribed as follows: The framelO with the to embrace the outer and -inner rails 12 andI 13. The platform also includes a transverse series of slats 36 securedpermanentlyA to: snidbarsy 34:.v The bars 34 may 'preferably be `made of metal, but 'theslats 36 should be of alighter material whereby the latfo'rmy 'mayv be .moved. independently of ut e frame 10 with"facilityland yet will be suiclently strong for its purpose. y
Having thus dcribed a preferredmanner z of` constructingthis improvement, the .manner of 4manipulating ity maybe briefiy, de
l' erator willthen it the7rods16 to the frame` .19.I In this operation he will holdtheframe 10 in one hand ,to prevent its dropping lfrom` -the window sill and with thegpther hand heV will slip the hooks 2O intofengagement with.
` the inner edge of -the frame 19, the, lugs 21` sliding freel over the threaded portions .of
the rods, an he will; then applythe nuts 22 asbefore described. Ihettings ,17 being pivotedto the. rail 13 makesit possible for the' frame to assume any" desired 'position during this-assembling operation, n. and, fur-A Athermore, it makes `itz-possible for thedevice to be-itted` to a window of any ordinary size.' If the length of the frameis greater than thewidthq of the' window, the frame will rest in any convenient manner upon the window sill, and, as shown infFig'. 1, the unions 14 maybear againstthe outer surfaceof `the Wallg.
Having `secured the frame to the o window sill as above described, the braces 23 will be free to swing upon the outer rail 12 and es-` 1 tablish, by cooperation-with the wall 32, a
proper horizontal position for the frame 10.
The'v devicewill be then ffready' to=receive the.-L platform 433 which mayl be A passed through forth: It 4Nillnbe ap arent, therefore, that no tools are required or vthe ordinary operajust the braces 23 with respect tofthe special y the window and put in :place asnalready set ytions' of this device. If itis necessaryto `atlf fittings 24: or the stays 29-in `order to adapt the device to any 4variations or types of building walls, this may be readily done by 1 loosening theseveral thumb screws andaganl L setting ythemafter proper Vadjustment is ef-i fecteda Byreason of the pivotal connections e between the :several parts; of the A mainrsup-r porting means, the deviceas a whole Imay `,bef-1 made tooccupy practically i no Amore vs ace ed swinrclosely parallel to the'end'. rails` `11"` e same plane; likewise the'rods 16 w than ,the frame 1,0the braces23 being a aptand in xt areadapted to swing varound the` inner'rail 13 and within they main frame.,-l
l Having thus describedlk my invention, I claim as newnand desire-to secure bylLetters ,Patent In a window platform, thel combination Vofa rectangular main'v frame,4 apair of vrods pivoted upon the 4inner rail ofthe frame and.` slidable therealong towardv 0r from each other, a hook slidably' connected to eachr rod,
means on the innergend of the rod to lsecure the hook thereon in adjustedpositionyandv means connected `to thev outer portion -of the rameand coperatingwith the outer sun face of the wall to support the 4framein sub-
