Specification of Letters Patent.
a Patented Apr. 15,1913,
article to be cast; The patternds then with drawn and molten metal is poured into the mold print thus formed? However, aigreat many castings are of irregular form! and cannot be withdrawn directly from the sand without destroying the mold: In casting,
articles which may bedivided on a Single plane into two :parts, each zof which has a draft, 2'. e. is capable of being drawn from the sand without destroying the print formed thereby, a two-part flask is used; the flask parts meetingon the plane of division of the patternzso that the two parts are in effect drawn toward the dividingplane, and the two molds thus formed are placed in registration to form a singlemold of the entire article.
In making molds foroasting articles of more irregular torm, vit is customaryto use a flask divided into several parts and part-- ed in the plane of the greatestdimension of each projecting portion of thetpattern.
In the practice of my invention, I am able to produce by means of a two-part :fiask the molds and cores of tubular; or hollow, or other articles having various projecting portions, the molds for which would previously have been formed in a flask otmoretthan two parts. The operation; of making such molds is thus simplified so that a molding,
machine may be used, and the expensein time and labor of producingsuch molds is much reduced. a
The formof my invention shown consists of a pattern mounted on a plate and projecting on each side of the plate lsolthat the plate occupies one of theplanes of division to which I have i referred. This pattern comprises a mold iprint, forming member above the plate, this portion of the pattern having the form of a portion of the finished article whichhas draftpz'. e., may be withdrawn from. the :sand without injuring the print and a filler seat forming member on the other side of the plate. This member is shaped to be drawn to the best advanta e and is adapted to form a seat for a mold sect-ion separately formed and bearinga print of a portion of the article to be cast, which may be irregular in shape and which commonly willnot draw. The term filler as herein useddesignates a portion of the mold which is produced separately from the upper and, lower sections. formed in a separate flask or filler box, which in internal shape and dimensions corresponds to the shape and dimensions of the filler seat. The filler, as I have stated, bears a print of an irregular portion of the cast- The filler is ing to be formed. The print surface of the I filler is formed by means of a attern of :a
corresponding section of the finished article i the plate, but, 11 desired the relative position a of these members may be changed and va-t ried to suit the particularand varying conditions' presented. The mam or plate pat-l tern is shown with a core forming aperture or core box open'at the bottom and extend-: I
ing through the filler seat formingportion of ;the pattern and upward through the her, the size of the core box depending upon the thickness of the casting and the extent to which it is to be hollowed out and also upon the thickness of the plate. I thnshave apattern mounted on a plate and compris- I ing a mold rint forming member above the plate, a fil er seat forming member below the plate andua core aperture or boxopen at the bottom through the filler seat forming portionyof the pattern and extending through the plate, so that in molding I form a mold print in the cope and a core in the drag, the latter being surrounded by a filler seat.
The casting shown has an encircling flange near its base, and it is also provided below the flange with projecting lugs. To mold the flange, a removable top plate may be usedwhich rests on top of the filler patplateandinto the mold print forming mem- I of the box, and the is secured to the plate near its center.
plate "forms the print for "the flange. The
lug; rints are formed by means'dFinovahle mem ers which slide into apertures in the pattern, being withdrawn by springs or other suitable means, and -forced out, in any oonvement manner as by when anserted.
11:5 The fin-i'etho'd'- and a paratus are ad the principles "which I have inven'ted.
In the accompanying ,drawings PI i h'ave shown ain apparatus for f maki ng molds "cona struoted in accordance with myinvention in its preferred form,

Referring 'to'fithe drawingsyFig. l shows a =two=part"flask consisting of a cop'e 1 and. a' drag 2 and a plate *pa-tter'nzfor patterns constructed in "accordance with the "prey ferred form of my invention. The pattern shown is adapted fto :pro'duce *m'olds for four axle skeins'in "a single flask, rand is mounted on 'a '-'p1ate 8, which "is placed *be- 4'5 tween'rthe -cope and dragengaging the adjacent ed'ges of the two flas k' members. As
illustrated in Fig. 1, the pattern consists of-.,-me1d:;p1'-int formi-ng membersn ion top of the :plate and "a -body member or filler 5?) seat formingmmbe'r 5'5. beneath "the plate, The members '4: are adapted "to produce molds of the tapering -bearing;pdrtions 25,

,yIn 2, I -hafve shown '-*a ?fil-1er 406x 7 ofinternal shape and dimensions identical with those' -of =the filler :kprint; foimin'g .[me'mber 5"oftheipattern. -This filler box has in ;-its=-botton1,;seating#apertures -8 -adapted to v the plate shank I aptedli to -producecastings ofany formjand the one 5 described is "intended "merely to illustrate,
the sand being, tamped ireadyf-to withdraw position the filler patterns 9 which are con structed' with projecting members 10 at-their lower ends to fit the openingsB. v These filler patterns conform to'the external shape and dimensions of the lower portionsof the cast ings in so far as these have a downward draft, but the casting as shown is provided with'an encirclingfiange or shoulder 11,
"at' theto'p. "To pr-oduce this shoulder, a cir- "o'ular plate 12 is placed on top of :the filler pattern so that its topts'urface the plane of the top edge of the fi'ller box. To position this plate and prevent displacement' th'ereot, it is provided with'a shank 13 which is seated in (an aperture "l-t 'in the filler pattern. The ficasting shown is also provided with laterally projecting lugs 15, i i and to form these I use movable members 16.
l hes'e are *mounted in *the filler pattern in slots or apertures 17 extending ilater'ally, 'and'coil sp'rin'gs 18=tendrtoretract the movable members. However, when the :plate is seated, the shank 13, passing through the aperture "14, eXpels the movable members 16 and causes them to take the ositi ho in 'F-i gfi2.
" The operation performed with the "type of apparatus described, 'e., the preferred formrof myinvention, is as "follows: The
pattern plate is :placed on a suitable support with" thewfill-er seat formingfimember up,
thenth'e drag :is 'placed "onf the plate inclose ingthe filler seat member. The'dragin this :p osition and th'e I core boxes, the openings in which-are also turned upward, are filled with-sand and tamped. Abottom board is -;th'en 'pl=aced*on'the' drag'and fastened and I the:pattern, plate andidrag turned over; the
cope-is then placed on the T pattern plate -in-' closing the pattern print forming Imember and filled with sand and tampeditherparts "of the flask a reseparatedand the pattern withdrawn, "leaving mold print-S 19 in the cope and cores 20standingupright'in the dragfand surrounded rah-their bases by ":a

The filler :patterns 9 are seated with their feet 10 inthe"apertures '8 inthebottomof the look Plates 1'2 areplac'ed on top of the patterns, their shanks :13 :being inserted in the apertures 14. The shankI 'IS, as -it' enters, engages ==-th e 'r-ear end of the movable member 16 and. iforce's it outward. -:'];he-fil ler The shanks 24' can "forming mechanismis thenready for tamping. After tamping, the plates 12 areifirst Withdrawn, the movable member 16 is thus releasedby withdrawalof shank 13 and is retracted by spring 18. Then shanks 24: of the anchor frame 22,, ,whichsupports the filler, are manually or otherwise engaged, withdrawing the filler from the box. It is handled by means of these shanks and placed in the filler seatin the drag and the shanks removed. The cope is then returned to its position on the drag and the mold is ready for pouring.
I have thus described in detail a single preferred embodiment of the molding, method and apparatuswhich are the subj ect of my invention in order that its nature and operation may be clearly understood. However, the specific terms herein are used in their descriptive rather than, in their limiting sense and thescope of the inventionis defined in the claims.
