Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 10,1912. Serial 1T0. 738,081.
Patented Apr. 15, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Ismon H. Ln'wm, a citizen of the United States, residin at New York city, in the county of New ork and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Medical Cabinets, ofwhich the following is a specification.
The invention relates to. apparatus for treating, diseases such as rheumatism,
dropsy, stifi joints, nervousness, etc.
The object of' the invention-is to induce perspiration on the body of the patient so as to accelerate the passage of an electric current and facilitate the entrance into the pores of the skin of a medicinal vapor.
To these ends the invention consists in the novel details of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described and claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which like numerals designate like parts in all the views:Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved apparatus. Flg. 2 is a detail view of the switchboard designed for sending a current of electricity through various partsof the body ofa patient. Fig. 3 is a etail side elevational view of the exercising machine located within the cabinet. Fi 4 is a detail plan view of one of the sadd es. Fig. 5- is a detail view of one of the edal and srocket connections. Fig. 6' is a etail view of one of the crank handles.
The apparatus comprises a portable cabinet I constructed of suitable material and provided with the extended top portion 2 and opposed extended end portions 3. The side panels 4, top panels 5 and'end panels 6 are all suitably secured to ether by means of the brackets. 7. Within t e sides of the extended end, portions 3 are provided the hinged doors 8 which form closures for the entrances to the cabinet and within the tops of the extended end portions are provided the, sliding top doors!) and 10 in which are formed circular openings 11. adapted to su'r'- round the neck of'a patlent being treated.
-A suitable heat generator 11 is located one end. portion of. the cabinet and is connected. by means of a valve controlled fiuidjsupply pipe 12 to a, source of fluid s pp y 13 Indicates a suitable receptacle which.
particularly pointed out in thea medical compound is vaporized by the gen erator. This. vapor by being confined in the cabinet has access to the exposed portion of the patients body within the cabinet.
The temperature of the atmosphere within the cabinet is determined by means of a small thermometer 14 located in the extended top portion of the side panel 4.
The adjustable exercising machine located within the cabinet com rises the lower stationary frame having 1; e long end uprights 18 and 19 and inner short uprights 20 arid 21 which are all formed of suitable tubing, are connected together by the cross .piece 22 and sup orted at their lower ends by the standar s 23., Secured within the end tubes 18 and 19 by means of the clamping collars 24, is an ad'ustable frame 25 which comprises the end' tubes 26 and 27 and braced by the connecting cross tube 28. Adjustably mounted withm the upper ends of the tubes 26' and, 27 by means 'of the clamping collars 28 and 29', are the saddle posts 30 and 31 to the upper ends of which are secured the saddles 32 and 33 which are adapted to support the patients when they are mounted on the exercising machine. The saddles may be of various sizes and shapes suitable to the patients. requiring treatment. Secured to the cross tubing 28 isa series of equally spaced sockets 34, 35, 36, 37 and 38 and within the sockets and 37 is adj-.ustably mounted, by'means of the clamping collars 39', a second pivoted frame .40 which domprises the uprights 41 and 42 connected at their top by means of a cross tube 43. Brackets 44 and 45' are ad'ustably connected to the sides of the uprights 41 and 42 and are adapted to su port the posts 46 ofthe s rocket bearings 4 m which are mounted to handle crank shafts 48. To the inner shaftportion of these crank shafts, are secured the large sprockets 49 and small sprockets 50 and to the outer or crank portions are secured the adjustable crank handles. 51.. Adjustably connected to An endless chain 58 connects the small' sprocket 50 mounted on the upper or handle crank shaft, with the large sprocket 55 mounted on the lower or edal crank shaft as seen on the left hand si e" of Fig. 3 of the drawings. Adj ustably connected to the right of the stationary frame and located within one of a series of sockets 56, on the cross tube 22, is a post; pedal and sprocket connection similar to the one just described except that the endless chain is carried aroundthe small sprocket on the edal connection and up over the large sproc et on the handle connection.
made for the purpose of changing the gearing of the machine to suit. the requirements of the different patients. It will be also noted that all the parts of the machine are interchangeable and can be adjusted to various degrees to suit the requirements of variour sizes and movements of the different patients desiring to use the apparatus. For instance, a patient suffering from rheumatism in his left arm, would naturally have a limited use of movement in that arm in comparison with his right, arm. This limited movement is compensatedfor by the, adjustment of the left crank handle to suit the necessary movement required f by the left arm, and should a patient be lame in one leg the limited movement of the leg is taken care of by the properadjustment of the proper pedal. All of the crank connections throughout the machine are to be provided with suitable ball bearings as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 5.
By referring to Figs. 4 to 6, it will be seen that I provide the various saddles, pedals and crank handles with suitable contact plates insulated from each other. These plates are connected by the circuit wires to the switchboard, the circuit through the plates being closed by the presence thereon of that portion. of the patients body which they are intended to support. These parts are adapted to be se arately controlled through the switchboar' connections as has been previously described. For instance, a person afliicted with a disease'in only one arm in using the machine, it isnecessary only to connect the proper switches for sending a current of e ectricity to the afilicted part and controlling the amount flowing thereto, by means of the adjuster on the induction coil 17.
After a patient has been properly treated The provision of this inter-. changeable sprocket and chain connection isthe ca within the cabinet heis taken out and given an electric massage. The means provided for accomplifiiing this further treatment (see Fig. 1) comprises a properly insulated instrument having suitably connected at one end a pair of sponges 61 and 62, which are soaked with a suitably and especially prepared compound. Electrical connections 63 and 64 secured to the instrument 60 and to the switchboard l6, supply a current of electricity to the sponges the amount of which is also controlled by means of the induction coil 17.
From the foregoing it will be seen that my apparatus comprlses a simple portable cabinet and an exercising machine located therein',that is capable of a wide and varied adjustment; that the apparatus may be readily taken apart and packed for shipment in a comparatively small space and that the same contains no intricate and fine parts that are liable to get out of order when the apparatus is most needed.
It is obvious that those skilled in the art may vary the details of construction and arrangements of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention and therefore I do not wish to be limited to such 4 features except as may be required by the claims.
What is claimed as new is:
1. In an apparatus'for treating disease, the combination of a portable cabinet adapted for'receiving a patient, an adjustable exercising machine located within the cabinet, hand and foot operating mechanism mounted on the machine and adapted to be operated by the patient, and normally opened electrical circuits including contacts insulated from each other mounted on the said hand and foot operating mechanism and arranged to contact with the person operating the machine.
