Description

N. RUPERT. STIRRUP.
APPLIUATION FILED MAY 24, 1912.
1,059,074- Patented Apr. 15, 1913` -UNTTED sTATEs PATENT oEEroE.
NOLAN RUPERT, OF MONKLAND STATION, ONTARIO, CANADA.
sTIRRiIP.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that NOLAN RUPERT, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Monkland Station, in the Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada., have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stirrups; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
rlhis invention relates to stirrups and has for an object to provide a stirrup which will open and release the riders foot upon the rider being thrown, there being a novel latch yieldingly held in operative position to lock the hinged member of the stirrup normally in operative position, the latch and Spring locking pin of the latch being so situated as to be normally iiush with the end of the stirrup foot rest so as not to catch in weeds or the riders clothing.
With the above objects in view the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, it being understood that various modilications may be made in the `minor details of construction within the scope of the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specicationz--Figure l is a front elevation of the stirrup. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the stirrup. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view through the st-irrup with the latch bar and part of the foot rest in section. Fig. 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of the end of the foot rest and spring' Jin.
1 Referring nowI to the dra-wing in which like characters of reference designate similar parts, the stirrup is shown to be of the usual form comprising a bow 10, an inner leg 11, and an outer leg 12 which is approximately one halfthe length of the inner leg.
The bow is provided with the usual attaching eye 18, and bridging the bow at the lower end of the outer leg 11 and integral with the latter is a -foot rest 14.
Specification of` Letters Patent.v
Patented Apr. 15, 1913.
Application led May 24, 1912. Serial No. 699,509.
The free end of the foot rest is provided with a longitudinal slot 15 which opens out through the edge of the foot rest and receives the tongue 1G of a hinged extension 17 of the outer leg, the said section being hingedly connected to the outer leg through the instrumentality of a pivot pin 18 passed through the branches of a bifurcationy 19 formed in the outer leg and through a tongue 20 which tits in between the branches and is integral with the extension.
The slot 15 bifurcates the foot rest and the branch 21 of the bifurcated end is provided with a centrally disposed horizontal slot 22. A bar latch 23 is provided at one end with a tongue 24 which fits in the slotl 22 and a pivot 25 is passed through the branch 21 and tongue to pivotally secure the latch. The'free end edge of the latch is provided with a shallow groove 26 the purpose of which will presently be explained.
Formed in the branch 27 of the Jfoot rest and opening through the wall of the slot 15 therein is a rabbet 28 of suicient size to receive the free end of the latch so that the outer face of the latch extends throughout flush with the extreme end edges of the foot rest branches 21 and 27. A resilient pin 29 is embedded at -one end in the inner wall of the rabbet and extends longitudinally of the foot rest, this pin normally bearing within the shallow groove 26 of the latch and having a head 30 which engages the outer face of the latch and normally retains the latch in position to hold the tongue 16 of the hinged extension 17 locked against the foot rest. A groove 31 is formed in the side wall of the rabbet into which groove the pin yields to release the latch upon the pivoted section beingimpinged against by riders foot as the rider is thrown. The pivoted section upon release rocks outwardly on its pivot and releases the riders foot from the stirrup.
What is claimed, is
A stirrup having a hinged side and having a foot rest provided with a bifurcated free end to receive the free end of said side,
a latch pivoted on one of the branches of pin yields to release said latch upon said said bifurcated end adapted to bridge said pivoted side inipinging against said latch. 10 branches and lock said hinged side to said In testimony whereof, I ulix my signafoot rest, and a spring pin carried by said ture, in presence of tWo Witnesses.
foot rest near the other of said branches NOLAN RUPERT. having a head adapted to engage said latch lVitnesses:
'and hold the latch closed, said branch being E. VARNER,
provided with a slot into Which said spring ELGIN MCKINNON.
