WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 1, 1912.
Patented Apr. 15, 1913. Serial No. 701,072.
type embodying improved means for easily and quickly adjusting the sliding jaw and securely locking the same in its adjusted position against liability of accidental release.
A further object of the invention is to provide a resllient locklng member carried by the sliding jaw to engage teeth upon the wrench shank, a cam lever to force said locking member into engagement with the shank, and additional means 011 the sliding jaw with which said lever cooperates whereby the lever is held in its effective locking position.
Still another object of the invention resides in the provision of a wrench of the above type wherein is embodied features of extreme durability, convenience and efficiency in practical use and low cost of manufacture.
. With the above and other objects in view as will become apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, combination-s and arrangements of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with the present invention showing the sliding jaw rigidly looked upon the wrench shank. Fig. 2 is an edge elevation of the wrench; and Fig. 8 is a detail perspective view of the cam lever.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the accompanying drawing by like ther provided with teeth 7 for engagement by the locking element mounted upon the sliding jaw to belater referred to.
8 indicates the sliding wrench jaw which is provided with laterally extending integral parallel arms 9 and 10 respectively, said arms extending upon opposite sides of the wrench shank 5. One end of a locking member 11 is riveted or otherwise rigidly fixed between the pair of jaw arms 10. The other end of this locking member is disposed between the other pair of jaw arms 9, said member extending in parallel relation to the wrench shank 5. The intermediate portion of this locking member isreduced in thickness as indicated at 12, whereby the desired resiliency is obtained, said locking member being preferably formed of steel. The free end of this locking member between the arms 9 isprovided upon one edge with teeth 13 for cooperative locking engagement with the teeth 7 on the wrench shank.
A lever 14: is provided with a cam 15 upon one end which is pivotally mounted between the jaw arms 9 upon the pin 16 which con- .nects said arms. This cam is adapted to bear at its edge against the free end of the locking member 12 and force the toothed edge 13 thereof into engagement with the teeth on the wrench shank, when said lever is forced inwardly. The free end of this lever is adapted to be received between the ends of the parallel arms 10 and in order to obviate liability of accidental or unintentional outward movement of said lever, which would release the sliding jaw, I provide a metal block 17 which is fixed to the free end of a heavy leaf spring 18, the other end of said spring being secured to the fixed end of the locking member 11. The block 17 is provided with a beveled or inclined face 17 against which the end of the lever lt is adapted to bear as the same is forced to its locking position. This end of the lever is provided with a shoulder 19 with which the inner end wall of the block 17 is adapted to engage. Thus when pressure is brought to bear against the fixed jaw of the wrench, the tendency of the cam lever 14: to move outwardly owing to the pressure of the locking member 12 against the cam 15, will be overcome. The engagement of the block 17 with the free end of the lever 14 will also prevent outward movement of the lever to its release position if the same is accidentally struck in the manipulation of the wrench.
The cam lever 14 is provided upon opposite sides of its intermediate portion with finger receiving recesses 20 whereby the lever may be readily grasped and easily forced outwardly against action of the spring-pressed block 17, in which position of the lever the jaw 8 is released for sliding movement upon the wrench shank.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction and manner of operation of my improved wrench will be clearly understood.
The device is extremely simple in construction, efficient and reliable in practical use and may be produced at small cost.
While I have shown and described the preferred construction and arrangement of the various parts, it will be understood that the invention is susceptible of considerable modification without departing from the essential features or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus described the invention What is claimed is:
The herein described Wrench comprising a shank having teeth on one edge and a fixed jaw on one end, a sliding jaw on said shank provided with spaced pairs of arms extending upon opposite sides of the shank, a resilient locking bar fixed at one of its ends between one pair of the arms adjacent to the toothed edge of the shank, a cam lever pivotally mounted in the other pair of arms to bear against the free end of the locking bar and force the same into engagement with the wrench shank, said bar being provided with teeth to engage the teeth on said shank, a spring plate secured to the fixed end of the locking bar and disposed entirely between the first named pair of arms said plate having an angularly disposed resilient end portion extending downwardly and outwardly, a block secured to the free end portion of said plate having a beveled surface, said cam lever being adapted for disposal at its free end between the arms when said lever is in its locking position, said lever being provided on its free end with a shoulder to be engaged by the block on said spring plate to retain said lever in its locking position against accidental outward movement to its release position.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
