VTo all *wh-,0m it may concern:
l Be lit known that'I, GEORGE-7. GRANT, a
citizen ofthe United States, residing at Buy cyrus( in 'the county of Crawford and State vof Chio, have inventedcertain lnew v`and useful Improvements in Dental Pliers, of which f Y the following -is la specification.
' My invention relates to- Combination denl talpliers andis particularly directed .'to the.
provision of a" pair of pliers ofa type-and form calculated torender thempa'rticularly effective for use in dental work.
One yof the' essential features of my pliers resides'in their applicability to the holding of artificial teeth, for instance, when it is 'desired to grind such teeth.
Difficulties attendantupon grindingartiicial teeth are a vsource'of considerable anf noya-nce to the average dentist, for the' rea.-
Ason that hitherto therehas been no instru' ment calculated to effectually grasp-and ree. tain such an; artificial ,toot-h during such.
grinding operation. Where ordinary pliers have beenused, a firm grip could not be gotten on the tooth. without exerting a great pressure, resulting frequently, in the breaking lof the tooth. Evenunder a great pressure, the tooth will change positions by slid- :tio-ii is shown ing due to the-'vibrations during grinding.
`My inventionis desirably represented for -deredapplicable by some simple means of 'connection and .this simple Vmeans of connection is also utilized by me in my preferred embodiment of pliers as a .means for facilitating the gripping and retaining of a vtooth backing which may be ground or operated upon. in any desired way.
The preferred embodiment of my inveninl the accompanying drawings, in which similar characters of reference'designate corresponding parts, and in I Which- Figure isa side elevation of my imf proved pliers which are desirably of the parallel-jaw type, Fig. 2 is an end' yiew looking from the left of the struct-ure shown in Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a detail View of the lower jaw of the tool shown in Fig. l, Fig. i is a detail of this lower jaw with the suppleme'ntal frictional surface appliedt-hereto,
l 's'iecieaiion if mammelle... Filmnieuws-15,1913.
Fig. 5 is' an' end `View of this lower jaw with such supplemental jaw applied thereto, Fig.
is a. detail View of this lower jaw support-- A ing a tooth backing, and, Fig. 7 is an end view of the structurey shown in Fig. 6.
A' In the drawings, the pliers arefshown at' 1 as having an upper jaw 2 and a lower jaw 3, the upper jaw 2 being desir-ably grooved as at 4. The lower jaw is preferably cut away as at 5 and provided V'with 'a slot'f extending inward from its outer extremity to any de- -sired length. They slot is preferably of a substantially dove-tail formation, although this is not absolutely essential to attain the benefits of my invention. Operating inconjunction with this lower jaw, I preferably jutilize a detachable surface element 7 comprising abody and4 a depending T-shaped tongue 8. This T-shaped tongue 8 is formed so as to permitv the bifurcated end of the jaw 3 to st'raddle and embrace its shank. [It will be readily apparent that the surface member may be slipped into the slot 6 as de-v scribed, with practically no difficulty and it' will be retained therein with sufficient strength to render the jaw member'suita'ble for gripping an artificial tooth. The 'ordi'- iiary artificial tooth is placed upon the friction element 7 and the curved surface common to' practically all teeth, will normally seat itself in the groove Llof theupper jaw member, thus firmly vcentering the 'tooth and maintaining it in such posit-ion allowing the operator to `grind the bottom of. the tooth the desired amount. then it is desired to grind or operate upon a tooth backing and at the same time firmly hold the same,-the surface element 7 may be removed and a. backing A placed upon' the lower jaw vbysliding its'rib Z) thereinto, which leaves itsl upper rib 0 in position to fit within the gro-ove i inthe upper jaw 2. Thus the backing is firmly grippedand helld in place j I I and may be .operated upon with assurance ofbetween the jaw members.
frictional facing cooperatively mounted with an exposed longitudinally extending -groove on theother of said jaws. f 2. Dental -pliers compris1nghandles,'and
jaws, one of said jaws having its end bifurcated, and a 'fritional facing provided with a Tshaped formation to fit in said bifurcation, the other of said jaws coperatmg with said frictional faces.
3. Dental pliers comprising handles, and jaws, one of said jaws having its end lqifurcated, the other of said jaws havingan eX- po-sed longitudinal groov therein, 'and a' frictional facing provided elvith a formation to fit in said bifurcation, l
4'. Dental pliers comprising handles7 and jaws, one of said j'aws having its vend bifurcated, and the other of'szlid jaws being provided with a cope'rating' exposed longitudinally extending groove.
y5.";'Dental pliers comprising handles, Irfid jaws. one ef said jaws beingr bifurcated and and a removable frictional facing provided l with a T-shaped formation to itin said bifurcation.
In testimony whereof lafix. my signature lin presence of two witnesses.
