' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
'vIcToR LINDBERQG, dimmer HARBOR, OHIO.
L E-Beww ficefie of e te Rete Patented Apr. 8, 19.13.
Application filed July 20, 191 2. Serial No. 710,702.
To all whom it may concern Be it knownthat I, Vrcron LINDBERG, a citizen of" the United States, residing at Fairpo'rt Harbor, in the county of Lake" and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Life-Boats, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved life boat for use on vessels and consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of deviceshereinafter described and claimed.
One object of my invention is to provide an improved life boat'of novel form which is practically unsinkable and which can not be swamped or overturned by a heavy sea.
Another object of my invention is to provide improved means for releasing the life boat from the supporting skids.
In the accompanying drawing :F igure 1 is partly a side elevation and partly a transverse sectional view of a life boat constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the same in place on supporting skids. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the same.
The hull 1 of my improved life boat is circular, has a flat bottom 2 which is also circular and is of less diameter than the hull and is arranged concentrically with reference thereto, there being an annular overhang 3 above the bottom which connects the same to the sides of the boat. The top 4 of I the boat is substantially semi-spherical in form and is flattened on its upper side to provide a circular concentrically arranged deck 5 which is preferably provided wtih a rail 6, as here shown.
My improved life boat is preferably made of iron or steel but may be made of any other suitable material. The top l of the boat is provided with window ports 6"and with hinged lights 7 to close the said ports, screws 8 being provided to securely fasten the lights in a closed position and the hinged lights being provided with suitable packing 9 to effect water-tight joints around the sides of the window ports. These window ports provide means for entering and leaving the life boat when the lights are open, and to facilitate entry into the boat through the window ports, the top of the boat being provided on its outer side with rungs 11 which are arranged below the window ports and of which any suitable number may be provided.
Owing to the shape of my improved life ing capacity is secured, so
boat, the same, when afloat and when the lights are closed, is absolutely tight against the entrance of water and, hence, the boat can not be overturned or sunk in a heavy sea nor can it be drawn under by the suction of a sinking vessel. At the center of the top of the boat is aventilating funnel 12 which is provided with a cowl l3'to prevent the entrance of spray. Below the ventilating funnel is a tank 14:, which is held in place by supports 15 and is open at itsupper side. In the event that spray should enter the ventilating funnel, it will be caught in this tankand prevented from ,wetting the interior of the boat. On the overhang 3 are seats 16 which are arranged radially and extend entirely around the boat and each of these is provided with a hinged back 17 which may be lowered in order to convert the seat into a couch. Owing to the circular shape of the boat and the arrangement of the seats on the overhang, maximum seattively small life boat constructed in accordance with my invention will suflice for a considerable number of persons. The life boat is preferably equipped with a provision chest 18 and with a fresh water tank 19, for the subsistence of the passengers and is also provided with a pump 20 by means of which any water that may leak in may be disposed of, the pump being here shown as provided with an operating handle or lever 21 and as provided with an intake pipe 22 which leads to a point near the bottom of the boat and an outlet The inlet pipe is provided with a valve 24. A drain pipe 25 leads downwardly from the tank 14 to the pump and has a valve 26. 'Hence, the pump may be used for pumping out water which may leak into the boat and may also be used for pumping out water which may accumulate in the spray receiving tank 14. A vertical tube 27 extends up through the deck 5 and is open at its upper and lower ends. A flag staff 28 for a signal or other flag 29 extends down through and is vertically movable in this tube so that it may be raised by a person in the boat in order to display the flag at an elevated position above the boat.
The boat, when arranged on a vessel is supported on skids 80 the overhang bearing on the skids. A vertical shaft 31 is mounted on a bearing 32 in the center of the botpipe 23 which discharges through one side of the top of the boat.
tom of the boat and has an operating lever 33 at its upper end. A cross arm 34 is secured to the lower end of this shaft and arranged below the bottom of the boat are a pair of locking bolts 35 which are movable radially under the bottom of the boat and have their inner ends pivotally connected as at 36 to the said cross arm at points near the ends of the latter. These locking bolts are arranged to operate in guides 37 under the bottom of the boat and their outer ends are adapted to engage keepers 38 with which the skids are provided. The boat is normally locked to the skids by the bolts. When the boat is to be used it may be detached from the skids by turning the shaft 31 soas to withdraw the bolts from the keepers as will be understood and this may be readily done by one man. A light but suffi' ciently strong cable 39 is coiled around the top of the boat immediately above the overhang, one end of the cable is attached to the boat as at l0 and an anchor ll is attached to the other end of the cable. The anchor may be cast in order to prevent the boat from drifting on rocks and foundering or breaking up.
Signal lanterns or other lights may be hung in the boat opposite the Windows to in dicate the position of the boat at night.
I claim A circular life boat having a bottom of less diameter than the boat, an annular overhang around the bottom, a top rising from the overhang, and seats arranged radially on the overhang, each seat having a hinged back adapted to be lowered outwardly and on and to be supported by the overhang.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
