Specification of Letters Patent.
`Patented Apr. 8, $913.,
Application filed November 12, 1912. VSeriell No. 730,886.
To all -wtom t may concern.'
lie it known that I, Janine R. Rickman,
- a citizen of the United States, residing at departure from or modification with relation to .the inventions constituting the subjects of prior applications for Letters Patent for gas regulators filed by ine May 28, 19112, Serial Nu1nber 700,228; and August ist, .1912, Serial Number 715,050.
The present invention has for its object to provide improvements in gas regulators which will be superior in point of relative simplicity and inexpensiveness combined 1';- with positiveness' and reliability and siiiciency yin service and sensitive responsiveness to various working conditions.
Further particular objects of the vinvention concern the provision of an improved gas regula-ter which will be more convenient in yinstallation and connection or,discon nection oi. the entirety and the parts thereof, in which the regulating function may be'varied conveniently and accurately, and in which repair and substitution of the parts, as required, may be conveniently made without detachi-nent of the regulator in entirety troni the main and service pipes.
With'the above and other objects in view, t ie invention'consists in the novel provision, formation, construction, combination, asso- -ciation and. relative arrangement of parts,
members and features, all' as hereinafter described, shown in the drawing, and finally pointed out in claims.
the drawing-ligure 1 is a transe. verse, vertical sectional view, paiits being in elevation, olf-ay gas regulator constructed and organized in accordance with the inventieni-Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view et the same, taken upon the line :r2-x2, Fig. l ,and looking downwardly :-.Fig;. 3. is a control means shown in the preceding nentary view of a portion of? the. gas-v igures in detached position; and Fig. l is a top plan view of the showing in Eig. 3.
Corresponding parts in all the figures are designated by the saine reference characters.
Referring with particularity to the drawin-g, the improved regulator comprises a casingI A within which is held a transverse diaphragm B, the `casing preferably co1n' prising or being,- provided with a circular top l member 5, and a circular bottom member G detachably joined by 'matched engaging edge flanges 7, the diaphragm. B being held at its edges between such flanges. A weight Srests upon the .uppersurface of the dia-I phragm and is clamped to thelatter by disk or plate 9 beneath the diaphragm and from .which a bracket 10, depends within a radial extension 11, o the bottom casing member (nat the outer end of which extension is a detachable closure C consisting of a plug 12 screwing into the end of such tubular extension 11. The weight 8 and plate 9 are jointly clamped to the diaphragm by a screw 16 and a compression springl 17 bears downwardly upon the diaphragm centrally of the same, being held in position by a screw plug 18 in -a nipple 19 rising above the top casing member 5. A gas main pipe 20 screws into a nipple 21 in the outer end of the tubular extension 11, directed downwardly therefrom, and a gas service pipe 22 screws into a corresponding nipple ,23, radially opposite to the nipple 21, the' of said pipesbeing at right angles' to the lon- 'gitudinal axis of the extension 11. The pipe 20 tits up against a screw plugQ in the nipple 2l, through which is formed a gas port 25 in connection with which coperates gas feed control means D in which are included a valve head 2G normally spaced slightly above theoriice of-the port 25, and lia-ving a conipressible face 27, which seats to close said port. An oscillating arm 28, loosely pinned at' its inner end as at 29, to
the lower bifurcated end of the bracket 10, andI its outer end -is pivotally supported upon a bearing pin or shaft 30, passing through enlarged spacedheads 31 at the' outer end of said arm `and received in tubular bosses 32 projecting inwardly from opposite sides of the extension l1 and abutting against the heads 3l.' A threaded cap "nut 33 screws into the 'outer projecting end of one of the bosses 32 holding the pin 30 in place.- 1li valve head 26h; included in valve means d in turnv comprised in the gas feed controlv 'means D which further include a bracket or mounting provided at one end with an enlarged head 35, which .tits between the spaced heads 31 and between' checks 3G projecting outwardly from the heads 31 and fitting channels or O'rooves 34E in the bracket let, so as to hold the bracket to the arm 28 to oscillate therewith, the pin 30 passing through .a bore in the head 35. A two-part stem 37 extends upwardly from the valve head Q6, through an opening 38 in the outer end of the bracket 34, the two parts thereof being yieldingly connect-ed by a coil spring 3) surrounding' the same and seated in threads formed thereon. The upper end of the stein 37 is threaded through a bore l0 in one leg 4i. of a bell crank lever ll pivoted as at 42 upon a bracket 4B ranging,r
outwardly from the head 35 above the major portion of the bracket 3st, a lock nut -Sbeing applied to the upperiend of the stem 57 above the bell crank lever. .kn adjustingl screw t4 constituting adjusting means e passes through the leg' 41h and bears against a vertical bracket 45 rising* from the head fsf.- A coil spring between the leg il and the bracllet 34 holds the lever 4l andV valve head 2G in normal positions.
The operation, method of use and advantages in use of the gas regulator constituting the invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and, the followingstatement: When it is desired to repair or replace any of the features of the valve means a or the adjusting means c, the cap nut .33 is withdrawn from the bushin?,l and the bearing pin 30 withdrawnr from the bushings and the heads 3l and` 35, freeing; the bracket 34 with its attached )arts which ma then bewithdrawn coin-v pletely through the outer end of the exten# sion 1l after the removal. of the plug 1.2 or closure C therefrom. It, is not necessary to detach the re'rulator casing members from the pipes, 20 and 29, or the pipes from the vformer, and when the parte described arc within vthe casing the plug l2 electually closes the same so that all the working parts are housed and protected from tamperinff or iiujmirn'ient. In this withdawing action, or inv the opposite asseml'ilinn' act-ion, the cheeks lll slide'relative to the bracket 34 in the grooves or channels 34, and the parts are finally connected together, in assembling or re-asscliiblinnj, by the pin which is passed. through the three heads 3l and 35 and fitted in the bushing' 232 and held therein by the cap nut 33. When it is desired to adjust the 'valve means d, the plu;` l2 is withdwiwn and the :uljustiun screw l14- is suitably. operated to tilt the bell eranklever fil-, swinging the Valve stem 257 of valve head. QG vertifally an oscillating masses vided to produce the proper action of the gas regulator and the diaphragm Bthereof to regulate the flow of gas from .the gas main pipe Q0 through the regulator and out through the gas service pipe The rovision of the spring,r sleeve 39 surroimcing,r the two-parts of the stem ends of which are normally slightly spaced apart, adds a spuug' quality to the action of such. stem-and provides the valve means d with a yielding quality of action, insuring; proper centering of the valve head or its facing upon the crowned upper end of the plug 24, through 'which opens the orifice of the port 25, so that the valve head effectually closes the gas port under compression of the spring, irrespective of the swing of the oscillating arm :28 and of the bell crank lever 41 and of the valve stem 3' when the latter arc adjusted.
The provision for detachment of the valve means al throi'lgh the extension openi ng normally closed bythe plug l2, together with the provision for adjusting thevalve means through the end. of the extension when the pl ug is so withdrawn, are features insuring great convenience and saving` of time in the control and repair and adjustment of the essential features of the regulator, and in the assembling and disconnecting of parts. j
.l do not desire to be understood as limiting' myself to the specific features and details of construction and organization herein set forth and disclosed; but reserve the right to vary the same, in adapting the improvements to varying conditions of use, without departiinr from the spirit of the in.- Vention or the terms of the following claims.
