APPLICATION TILED SEPT. 9 1912.

1?; E LT-Ii NATE NEWCOMB, OF ABERDEEN, IDAHO,
SWIVEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 8,1913.
Application filed September 9, 1912. Serial No. 719,490.
To all whom 2'25 may concern:
Be it known that I, NATE NEwooMB, citizen of the United States, residing at Aberdeen, in the county of Bingham and State of Idaho, have invented new and useful Improvements in Swivels, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention pertains to swivels and more particularly to swivels such as are equipped with hooks; and it consists in the inexpensive, durable and practical swivel hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of -a swivel constructed in accordance with my invention.- Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken in the plane indicated by the line 33 of Fig. 1, looking toward the hook or swiveled member of the device. Fig. 4: is a detail elevation of a modification hereinafter specifically ferred to.
Referring by numeral to the said drawings and more particularly to Figs. 1-3 thereof: 1 is the swivel member of the swivel, and 2 is the body of the device. The swiveled member 1 is in the form of a shank, and is provided at its rear end with a head 3 having a forward fiat side 4:. Atits forward end the said swiveled member is preferably provided with a grab hook 5, as shown, though it might be provided with any other suitable means without aflecting my invention. The body 2 is exteriorly tapered from its middle or a point adjacent its middle to its ends, this in order to afford a good hand hold when it is necessary to pull the swivel by hand, and also in order to preclude the swivel catching or becoming fast on timbers, rocks or other obstacles in its path when the swivel is moved lengthwise in either direction. The rear end portion of the body 2 is made solid for the sake of strength, as indicated by 6 in Fig. 2, and the forward end portion 7 of the body is made of increased thickness and s provided with a bore 8 in. which the swiveled member 1 is snugly journaled. The rear end of the portion 7 is fiat and disposed at a right angle to the length of the body 2, and hence it will be manifest that there is no liability of the swiveled member 1, the head of which abuts against said portion 7, binding; and it also will be apparent that the portion 7 affords a strong and durable abutment for the head of the swiveled member. Interiorly the body 2 is provided between the portions 6 and 7 with a chamber 9 which affords ample room for play of the head on the swiveled member and also renders the body light in' weight. The wall of the said chamber 9 is provided with an aperture 10 through which lubricant can be conveniently supplied to the bearing of the swiveled member. At its rear end the body 2 may be provided with an integral clevis 11, as shown in Fig. 1, or with an integral ring 11 as shown in Fig. 4, or with any other desired appurtenance for the connection of said body to a double tree, cable or other device.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, 1s:
The herein described swivel consisting essentially of a body that is exterior-1y tapered from an intermediate point in its length to its ends and is provided with a rear solid portion and a forward portion in which is a longitudinal central bore, and is also provided between said end portions with a chamber havinga lubricant aperture in its wall; and a swiveled member journaled in the bore in the forward portion of the body and having a head, considerably smaller in size than the chamber in the body, disposed in said chamber and opposed to the rear end of the forward portion of the body.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
NATE NEVVCOMB.
