STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DEVICE FOR SEALING ENVELOPS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALBERT EDWARD YOUNG and GEORGE GORDON HOLMES, subjects of the King of Great Britain, both residing at 13& Hereford street, Christchurch, in the Province of Canterbury and Dominion of New Zealand, have invented a new. and useful Improvement in Devices for Sealing Envelops, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for use in sealing envelops, its object being the provision of a simple device by means of which this operation may be conveniently and eX- peditiously carried out. The construction employed in carrying this object into efiect will now be fully explained with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1. is a perspective view of the device, and Fig. 2. is a longitudinal section of the same.
1 is a horizontal surface or-table forming a portion of the upper side of a suitable base 2, the remaining portion of which is covered by a flap 3 which is hinged upon the'base at at and is adapted when in its lower or depressed position, to come in line or approximately in line with the table 1.. Upon the edge of the flap 3 abutting the edge ofthe table 1 is revo-lubly mounted a roller 5 and a suitable spring 6 is provided to normally maintain the said flap upward with the lower side of its roller 5 in line with or slightly above the upper surface of the table 1.
Arrange-d within the base 2, at a point beneath the roller 5 is a chamber 7 containing sponge or other suitable absorbent material 8, the upper portion of which projects upwardly so as to come in contact with the roller 5 when the flap 3 is depressed. Moisture is supplied to the absorbent material 8 from a-suitable reservoir 9 formed in the base 2 and communicating with the Specification of Letters Patent.

chamber 7 through holes or perforations 10 formed through the partition 11.
The operation of the device is as follows:The envelop is laid upon the table with its flap outspread and its gummed side downward. In this position it is caused to slide along, by the hand of the operator with its flap forward until the latter passes beneath the roller. The flap 8 is then depressed so that the main portion of the envelop passes above the roller and slides along the upper surface of the flap 3, which action causes the flap of the envelop to be withdrawn from beneath the roller and folded back upon the envelop in the required manner while the gummed portion in passing out from beneath the roller, when the latter is depressed, comes in contact with the absorbent material which moistens it and so prepares it for sealing.
We claim:
In an article of the class described, in combination, a table mounted upon a suitable base, a flap hinged at its outer edge upon said base and adapted to be depressed so that its upper surface will be approximately in line with the upper surface of said table and form a continuation thereof, a roller revolubly mounted along the free edge of said flap which is adjacent to said table, a spring adapted to maintain said flap in a raised position with the underside of its roller in line with or above the upper surface of said,
table, and a moistening device arranged in said base so as to be engaged by said roller when the flap is depressed, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands in the presence of two witnesses.
