To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HERMANN WRONKER, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Frankfort-on-the-Main, in the Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ticket or Label Printing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.

Figures or numerals on wooden bars and also bars with removable types have hitherto been employed for making tickets and labels for pricing and marking goods.

Now this invention has for its object the printing of such labels or tickets by a hand operated machine.

It is an essential improvement that the printing of the adjusted types on the paper bands takes place in rows by a roller method, 2'. c. rotary printing while the paper band is moved forward between the separate periods of printing.

One form of construction of the invention will now be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a front view of the machine; Fig. 2 is a side elevation with parts broken away in order to show the interior of the printing drum.

In this frame a removable paper band reel b, paper guiding roller a, printing cylinder cl, counter pressure roller 6, inking roller f and crank handle shaft 9 are mounted. For the purpose of fixing the types after each adjustment, a hole at is provided under each type of the type wheels and through which and through a similar one in the end cover 2' a fixing pin a is passed after the types have been adjusted. The rotation of the printing cylinder is obtained by the end cover 2' being formed as a toothed wheel and receiving a rotary motion by means of gearing from Specification of Letters Patent.

the crank handle 0. By this means any play of the type wheels is avoided and a clean impression is obtained. For this ob-- ject the counter pressure roller 6 and the inking roller f must also stand a little away from the printing cylinder 03. A number of window-like apertures or slots 39 are provided in the casing of the printing cylinder corresponding to the number of the sets of type wheels or carriers employed, through which slots the types project in transverse rows so far that they produce a clean impression. The printing cylinder d has at suitable distances apart on its periphery, a steel toothed comb g which serves as perforating and paper shifting device.

A device of the following kind for guiding and tensioning the paper is provided in the upper part of the frame a:A flexible, springy bar 1" is secured on one of the rods of the frame, for instance 1* or in any other suitable way, the front end of which bar presses the paper band on its roller b and may be adjusted by a setting device for various pressures. For this object the end of' the springy bar 1 is passed transversely through the rod 1", andthe latter is made revoluble and also provided with a ratchet wheel 8, with which a pawl s fixed on the machine frame engages in any position and automatically looks it,

The apparatus shown in the drawings is intended for printing tickets or labels-having one row of letters and one row of figures. The printing of the separate rows (cross rows) takes place successively and when the printing is done, the bands or strips are removed and perforated. The one row consists preferably of letters forming a secret code, the other row of figures which represent the corresponding indications of price. The adjustment of the letters and rows of figures is done by means of the disks and rollers Z, and the types remain in their adjusted position during the printing of the desired number of tickets or labels. According as one or more labels are to be finished in one revolution of the printing cylinder, blocks may be firmly or removably arranged in a number of or in all the slots 7) around the printing block, which blocks do not project beyond the periphery of the casing more than the adjusted types and are intended to bring out a similar impression, for instance, a firm name, a border or the like for all the labels, that is to say also for those which are adjusted to other price indications.

The counter pressure drum 6 must be centrically and somewhat elastically mounted, in order that the types when passing over it do not slip away over it, but take it somewhat with them. This is necessary in order that a clean impression may be produced in roller printing (rotary printing) for which reason the printing faces of the types must be turned down centrically. The inking roller f is mounted in the frame so as to run freely in order that when the printing cylinder is rotated the adjusted types projecting from the slots 79 pass over it and are inked before they reach the printing place. The shifting of the paper band from one printing row to another is done by means of the projecting types, while when the printing is finished the paper band is moved forward by the perforating device q. The paper band t is conveyed from the reel Z) to aguide-bar a between the printing cylinder and the counter pressure roller, and then under the paper guide roller 0 under the bar 1* again over the reel Z), so that visible printing is obtained.

In using the apparatus the method of procedure is as follows :--'When the paper strip 6 has been passed in the manner shown in Figs. 1 and 2 over the guide bar a, the counter pressure roller 6, the guide roller 0 and under the bar r, the type Wheels h are adjusted to the types which are to be used for printing. This is done in the ordinary way by means of the disks or rollers Z by bringing the slots 2) into the position shown in Fig. 1, in which it may be ascertained whether the types are in the correct position, whereupon the latter are fixed by inserting the fixing pin n. It is then only necessary to continuously rotate the crank 0. The adjusted rows of type then travel first over the inking roller f and then over the paper bands t carried over the counter pressure roller 6, thus carrying the paper bands a little with them. When the printing of both rows has been done, the paper strip is simultaneously perforated and moved forward by the steel toothed comb q. Between each impression there is therefore a shiftin g of the paper band corresponding to the distance between the lines and rows and after the printing of all the rows and after each full rotation of the printing cylinder, a perforation of the band.

The printed labels or tickets on quitting the apparatus from which they are preferably delivered in such a way that the print-- ing is visible, come on to a band, gummed if desired, which is perforated at the places where it is to be separated, so that each label may be conveniently detached and is immediately ready for use for attachment to the goods.

I declare that what I claim is Printing mechanism of the class described comprising in combination, side frame memhers, a hollow printing cylinder with type mechanism disposed within the same and projecting therefrom, said frame members having openings and both peripheral ends of said cylinder extending into and having bearings in said openings, a head eonnected to said cylinder outside of one of said frame members and having a peripheral gear thereon, and a removable head secured to the other end of said cylinder and disposed outside of said frame members.
