Another object of the invention resides in providing suitable tripping mechanism for the inking apparatus and form rolls when the impression remains tripped. v
The invention accordingly consists in arranging the impression and form carrying cylinders one above the other but out of vertical alinement so as to expose a portion of the upper surface of the form carrying cylinder for the form rolls to rest upon, the inking apparatus being arranged upon the same side as the form rolls, leaving the other side of the form carrying cylinder exposed, which is of great advantage, especially in planographic machines. Preferably a printed side up delivery mechanism is arranged in front of the impression cylinder, and the form carrying cylinder is located below the impression cylinder but out of vertical alinement therewith and extends forwardly unfder the delivery mechanism, leaving an exposed portion on the upper'surface of the 40 said form cylinder on which the form rolls rest. This leaves the rearwardly facing portion of the two cylinders exposed, so that the pressman can wipe or dampen the form or otherwise manipulate the design without danger of being caught in the moving parts. In mul'tirevolution machines, it is necessary to automatically trip and untrip the impression once to each cycle of the machines. This is usually effectedby moving the impression cylinder into and outof contact with the form cylinder at certain intervals. The automatic means for tripping and untripping the impression take, in the present instance, the following form: The impression cylinder is mounted in eccentric bushings 14 which are connected to the rockshaft 15 by means of the arm 16, rod 17 and lever 18, the parts being in duplicate and connections being made on both sides of the machine. Mounted on the shaft l9 is the cam 20 making one revolution to each imression. Engagin with this cam is the riction roll 21 o the ivoted lever 22 whose free end is provide with a friction roll 23. 24 is a connecting lever secured at one end by means of the arm 25 to the rockshaft 15, while its other end is provided with the slot 26 having the recessed portion i 27 in which the friction roll 23 engages. The rotation of the cam 20 will therefore,

The rockin and slid ing cam 28'is mounted on the stu 32 which is 'slidingly mounted in the framework, and is normally held out of the plane of the pin 31 by reason'of the spring 33 attached to the collar 34 and acting outwardly a iiinst the forked lever 35. The collar 36 imits the outward movement of the forked lever.
The forked lever 35 is comfe'cted to a suitable actuating device which latter, in the present instance, consists otth'e following,clements: 37 is a rock'shaft" tnounted in the bearings 38 and connected to the foot treadle 39 in the feeders platform by means of the horizontal lever 40, the vertical connection 41 and the centrally pivoted lever 42. When the foot treadle is depressed, it will act to move the rocking and sliding cam 28 into the plane of the member 31. The form rolls 9 are mounted in suitable bearings 43 in the framework and can be lifted out of cont-act with the form by means of the cam arms 44 pivoted at 45 and adapted to act against the shanks 46 of the said form rolls.
47 denotes an inking apparatus composed, in this case, of the fountain 48, fountain roll 49, ductor roll 50, distributing drum 51 and distributing rolls 52. The parts composing the inking apparatus are mounted on the movable carriage 53 adapted to slide on the rollers 54 so as to be moved toward and away from the form cylinder and the form rolls, whereby access can readily be had to the parts. The means for moving this carriage supporting the inking apparatus consist of the toggle links 55 and 56 and operating handle 57. The stops, 58 limit the movement of the carriage. The inking apparatus is geared to supply ink to the form once to each impression, that is in the present instance, once to every two revolutions of the form cylinder. \Vhen the impression, however, is tripped beyond the normal period it is of course undesirable to have the ink accumulate on the distributing rolls and form. For this reason means are provided for stopping the suppl of ink when the foot treadle is depresse or the im ression is otherwise maintained tripped, also means for liftin the form rolls off. the form. It is desirab e, however, that the parts should be so constructed that the ink can be distributed when inking up 'while the form rolls are raised off the form and while the impression is maintained tripped.
In the present instance these severatmeans take the following form: Mounted loosely on the fountain roll shaft is a gear 59 having the clutch member 60 attached thereto. Mounted fast on the fountain roll shaft is a corresponding clutch memher 61 which is adapted to slide on the said shaft by reason of the key 62. Corresponding teeth and notches 63 are provided on the said two clutch members, which when in engagement cause the rotation of the gear to be imparted to the shaft. Mounted on the stud 64 is a two armed lever 65 one end of which engages with the sleeve 66 moving with the clutch member 61., Mounted loosely on the stud 64 is the member 66 engaging with the cam 67. Carried by the lower arm of the lever 65 is the hollow projection 68 in which rests the s ring 69 hearing against the member 66. When the cam 67 is turned in. one direction, the member 66' will engage with the hollow projection 68 thereby causing the two clutch members to engage with each other. If the teeth and notches 63 are not in alinement with each other when the clutch is thrown in, power will be stored in the spring 69, and when the said teeth and notches coincide, the expansion of the spring will throw the members into engagement. When the cam 67 is moved in the other direction, the member 66 will encounter the pin 70 on the lower arm of the lever 65 and will throw the clutch members out of engagement. The teeth and notches 63 are however sufficiently long so that if the pin 70 is placed in the aperture 71, the member 66 will not move the lever 65 sufiiciently far to cause the disengagement of the clutch members. It will therefore be seen that by turning the cam 67 in one direction the op eration of the fountain roll will cease, but, that, if desired, the cam can be turned without stopping the operation of the said fountain roll. In the present instance, the ductor roll is conveniently ofperated from the cam 72 mounted on the ountain roll shaft by means of the arm 73 and friction roll 74. By this means, when the rotation of the fountain roll ceases, the oscillation of the ductor roll will also cease.
In order to turn the cam 67 back and forth so as to trip and untrip the ink supply, connections are made to the automatlc means for tripping and untripping the impression, the arrangement being such, however, that these means are rendered effective to trip the ink supply only when the actuating device for maintaining the impression tripped is set in motion. In this case these connections which may be termed the ink controlling means take the following form: Mounted upon the pin 75 in the framework is the reciprocating connection 76 attached at its free end to the pivoted lever 22 by means of the bolt 77. Pivoted on the said reciprocating mnntection are two cam levers 78 and 79 connected by the link 80 so that they will move up and down in unison. Moving with the cam 67 is an arm 8] having the friction roll 82. Mounted on the rock-shaft 37, and thus connected ,with, or forming part of, the actuating device, is the releasing member 83 upon which rests the cam; lever 78. When the machine is normally running the two cam levers are held in their uppermost position and the reciprocation of the connection 76 will produce no result in the operation of the machine. But, when the foot treadle is depressed the releasing member 83 will allow the cam levers to drop when the cam lever 79 moves in behind the roll 82, and will, on the return stroke, carry the said friction roll with it, thus turning the cam 67 and stopping the supply of ink. So long as the foot trcadle remains depressed, which can be done either by the opgrator keeping his foot on the same, or by a locking device in i a well known manner, the ink supply will remain tripped. But when the foot treadle is released and moves back, the cam lever 78 will move into the plane of the friction roll 82 and the inking 0 eration will be resumed. Connected to t e friction roll 82 is the arm 84 attached at its other end to the cams 85 mounted on the stud 86. These cams 85 engage with the friction roll 87 on the lower end of the cam arms 44 so that simultaneously with the stoppin of the ink supply the said form rolls Wil be raised out 0 contact with the form. If the pin is placed in the aperture 71 however, the form rolls will be lifted, but the ink supply will not stop.
The water rolls 12 are carried by a bracket 88 mounted on the bearings of the ower shaft 89 and can be moved tower and away from the form by means of the lever 90 operating the roll 91 engaging with the surface 92 of the bracket 89. The ductor roll 93 of the water rolls is shown as being operated in this instance by means of the cam 94 on the shaft of the form cylinder through the instrumentality of the lever 95 and friction roll 96.
It is to be understood that although the water rolls are shown movable from the form cylinder by hand lever only, that they can be moved by any well known cam device so as to contact with the form cylinder every second revolution. Also in cases Where the form cylinder has a part of its surface utilized as an ink distributing surface, the dampening rolls will be lowered out of contact with said surface every revolution automatically. This construction is shown in Patent #758112.
The gearing employed in this machine is as follows: Starting with the power shaft 89, the pinion 97 mounted thereon drives the water rolls in any suitable and well known manner such as is disclosed in Letters Patent 758112. The said pinion further meshes with the gear 98 on the form cylinder and with the gear 99 mounted on the stud 100. From this gear 99 motion is imparted to the gear 101, pinion 102 and gear 103 on the shaft 19. The gear on the form cylinder meshes with the gear 104 on the impression cylinder, and with the gear 105 on the movable carriage of the inking apparatus. The latter gear 105 transmits motion through the gear 106 and pinion 107 to the gear 59 on the fountain roll shaft. The form cylinder is further provided with a gear 108 of less pitch diameter than the pitch diameter of the said form cylinder. From this gear the form rolls are driven by means of the intermediate pinions 109 In a manner similar to the construction shown in Patent 758112. The two upper rolls 110 resting on top of the form rolls proper and movable therewith may be simply distributing rolls, or they may be vibrating rolls also as disclosed in the said Patent 7 58112.
What is claimed is:
1. In a printing machine, the combination of a printing couple,consisting of a form and impression member, an inking apparatus, fo'rm rolls, automatic means for tripping and untripping the impression at regu lar intervals, means for interrupting the operation of the automatic means aforesaid so as to maintain the impression tripped, means for stopping the suppl of ink, means for lifting the form rolls 0 the form, and an actuating device controlling the interrupting means, the ink supply stopping means and the form roll lifting means.
2. In a printing machine, the combination with a printing couple consisting of a form and impression member, an inking a paratus having a fountain and fountain roll, means for operating the fountain roll, form rolls, automatic means for tripping and untripping the impression at regular intervals, means for interrupting the operation of the automatic means so as to maintain the impression tripped, means for rendering the operating means for the fountain roll inoperative, means for lifting the form rolls off the form, and an actuating device controlling the interrupting means, the
means for rendering the operating means of the fountain roll inoperative and the form roll lifting means.
3. In a printing machine, the combination wit-h a printing couple consisting of a form and impression member, an inking apparatus having a fountain and fountain roll,
means for operating the fountain roll, a ductor roll, means for operating the ductor roll from the fountain roll, form rolls, automatic means for tripping and untripping the impression at regular intervals, means for interrupting the o eration of the automatic means aforesai so'as to maintain the impression tripped, means for renderin the operating means for the fountain r01 inoperative, means for lifting the form rolls off the form, and an actuating device controlling the interrupting means, the means for rendering the operating means of the fountain roll inoperative and the form roll lifting means.
4. In a printing machine, the combination of a form cylinder, an impression cylinder superposed above the same but arranged out of vertical alinement with the form cylinder so as to expose a portion of the upper surface of the form cylinder, form rolls resting on the said exposed portion of the upper surface of the form cylinder, an inking apparatus adjacent to the said form rolls, and means for moving the said inking apparatus away from the form rolls.
5. In a printing machine, the combination of a printing couple consisting of a form and impression member, an inking apparatus, form rolls, automatic means for tripping and untripping the impression at regular intervals, means for interrupting the operation of the automatic means aforesaid so as to maintain the impression tripped, means for stopping the supply of ink having provisions whereby the said means can be rendered inoperative, means for lifting the form rolls off the form, and an actuating device controlling the interrupting' means, the ink supply stopping means and the form roll lifting means.
6. In a printing machine, the combination of a form cylinder, an impression cylinder superposed above the same but ar ranged out of vertical alinement with the form cylinder so as to expose a portion of the upper surface of the form cylinder, form rolls resting on the said exposed portion of the upper surface of the cylinder, a cam arm supporting said form rolls pivoted at its upper end, and means for raising the lower end of the cam arm.
7. In a printing machine, a form carrying member and an impression cylinder, a movable carriage, inking apparatus on the carriage, form rolls receiving ink from the inking apparatus but mounted independently of the movable carriage, means for moving the form rolls away from the form carrying-member independently of the movable carriage, and means for tripping the impression, form rolls and inking apparatus. 8. In a printing machine, form carrying and impression cylinders arranged out of vertical alinernent with respect to each other so as to expose the upper surface and the rear surface of the form cylinder, a movable carriage, inking apparatus on the carriage, form rolls engaging the upper exposed surface of the form cylinder and receiving ink from the inking apparatus, and means for tripping the form rolls and inking apparatus.
9. In a printing machine, the combination with'a printing couple embodying form and impression members, of form rolls, an inking apparatus! a reciprocating member, cam members carried by said reciprocating member, means for controlling the operation of the inking apparatus and t-he form rolls, and means for positioning the cam members whereby upon the reciprocation of said reciprocating member, said cam members will act upon the controlling means.
aforesaid to interrupt the operation of the inking apparatus and the form rolls.
10. In a printing machine, form and impression members, inking apparatus, means for controlling the operation of the inking apparatus, a reciprocating member, a cam member carried thereby, and an actuating device adapted to position said cam member to cause the same, upon the movement of the reciprocating member, to engage the controlling means and interrupt the action of the inking apparatus.
11. In a printing machine, form and impression members, form rolls, means for lifting the form rolls off the form, a reciprocating member, a cam member carried thereby, and an actuating device adapted to position said cam member to cause the same, upon the movement of the reciprocat ing member, to cause actuation of said form rolls lifting means.
12. In a printin machine, a printing couple composed of form and impression members, an inking apparatus, automatic means for tripping and untripping the im-' pression at regular intervals, means for in-' terrupting'tlie operation of the automatic means aforesaid so as to maintain the impression tripped, means for stopping the supply of ink, a reciprocating member, cam members carried by said reciprocating .membet, and an actuating device controlling the inte rupting means and adapted to position the Enid cam members to engage and operate the id ans for stopping the supply ofink.
13. Iii a printing machine, a printing couple composed of form and impression members, form rolls, automatic means for tripping and untripping the impression at regular intervals, means for interruptingthe operation of the automatic means aforesaid so as to maintain the impression tri ped, means for lifting the form rolls 0 the form, a reciprocating member, cam members carried by said reciprocating member, and an actuating device controlling the interrupting means, and adapted to position the cam members to cause operation of the -means for lifting the form rolls.
14. In a printing machine, a printing couple composed of form and impression members, an inking apparatus, form rolls, automatic means for tripping and untripping'the impression at regular intervals, means for interrupting the operation of the automatic means aforesaid so as to maintain the impression tripped, controlling means for stopping the supply of ink, means" for lifting the form rolls 0 the form, a reciprocating member,
said reciprocating member, and-an actuating device controlling the interrupting means and adapted to position the cam members to operate the ink supply stopping means and the form roll lifting means.
15. In a printing maphine, the combina tion "with the members of a printin couple, of automatic means for tripping an untri ping the impression at regu ar interva s, an inking apparatus, a reciprocating member havin a movement timed to corres ond to that o the automatic tri pingan tripping means, ink supp y controlling cam members carried-by means for stopping and starting the supply of ink, two cams on the reciprocating member either of which may be brought into engagement with the ink supply controlling means, cam positioning means adapted to bring either cam into engagement with the ink supply controlling means, and an interrupting device for interrupting the opera- -tion of the automatic tripping and untripping means and for controlling the cam posi tioning means.
16. In a printing machine, the combination with the members of .a printing couple, of automatic means for tripping and untripping the impression at regular intervals, an inking apparatus, ink supply controlling means adapted when shifted in opposite directions to start or stop the supply of ink, a reciprocating member timed to reciprocate once to each impression, cam members on the reciprocating member adapted to be positioned to engage and shift the ink supply controlling means in either direction, and means for positioning the cam members to engage the inksupply controlling means so as to start or stop the supply of ink.
17. In a. printing machine, the combina tion with the members of a printing couple, of' automatic means for tripping and untripping the impression at regular intervals. an inking apparatus, ink supply con trolling means adapted when shifted in opposite directions to start or stop the supply of ink, a reciprocating member timed to reciprocate once to each impression, cam members on the reciprocating member adapted to be positioned to engage and shift the ink supply controlling means in either direction, means for positioning the cam i'uemhers to engage the ink supply controlling means so as to start. or stop the supply of ink, and an interrupting device for interrupting the operation of the automatic trip.- ping and untripping means and controlling the cam positioning means.
18. In a printing machine, the combination with the members of a printing couple, inking apparatus, ink supply controlling means adapted when shifted in opposite di rections to start or stop the supply of ink, a reciprocating member arranged to reciprocate in a relatively fixed path, cam members movably mounted on the reciprocating member adapted to be positioned to engage and shift. the ink supply controlling means in either direction, and means for positioning the cam members to engage the ink supply controlling means so as to start or stop theto lift or lower the form rolls, a reciprocat ing member arranged to move in a relatively fixed path, cam members movably mounte on the reciprocating member adapted to be positioned to engage and shift the ink supply controlling means in either direction,
and means for positioning the cam members I to engage the ink supply controlling means so as to lift or lower the form mile 20. In a printing machine, the combination with the members of a printing couple, ofautomatic means for tripping and untripping the impression at regu ar intervals, form rolls, ink sup ly controlling means adapted when shifte inopposite directions to lift or lower the form rolls, a reciprocating member timed to reciprocate once to each impression, cam members on the reciprocating member adapted to be positioned toengage and shift the ink supply controlling means in either direction, means for positioning the cam members to engage the ink supply controlling means so as to raise or lower the form rolls, and an interrupting device for interrupting the operation of the automatic tripping and untripping means and for controlling the cam positioning means.
21. In a printing machine, the combination with the members of a printin couple, an inking apparatus, form rolls, in supply controlling means adapted when shifted in cam members to engage the ink supply con-- trolling means so as to start or stop the inking operation.
