Be it known that I, ROBERT B. PRICE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stoneham, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Boiler-Tube Blowers, of which the following is a specification. p
This invention relates to improvements in boiler ,tube blowers and 'is particularly adapted for use in connection with the horizontal return tube type of boiler.
The object of the invention is to provide a blower adapted to. blow soon-scales or ashes from the tubes of a boiler by directing a jet of superheated steam into m'of each ofshid tubes, said devicelbeing arranged. asfa fixture on saidfboiler1 and connected in such a manner to the door of said boiler that it may be automaticallyy moved out of the `way by the opening of said door, whereby access may be had to the front tube sheet, without device.
A further object of. the invention is to provide a blower comprising nozzles directed toward or into the ends of the tubes of a boiler ,and by which one of the rows or series or a plurality of series of said tubes may be blown, or the entire series may be lsimultaneously blown as desired.
Still another object of the invent-ion is to provide means accessible from the exterior of the door of saidboiler adapted to control lthe nozzles of each of the series thereof.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts whereby the above objects and certain other objects hereinafter appearing are attained as set forth in the..
fol-lowing specification and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a front view of a boiler with the device embodying my invention shown in connection particularly therewith, portions of said boiler being' broken away to save space in the drawings.

The door 11 is hinged at 13 upon one side of the opening 10, while the door 12 is hinged at 14- upon the 'opposite side of said opening, said door 12 being. provided with a lip 15 which overlaps the edge of the door 1l and seals the front of said boiler when said'doors are closed. i
Within the chamber 9 at -the front of the tube sheet 6 are arranged a plurality of nozzles 16 one for each of the tubes 7, said nozzles alining with said tubes, or in other words, directed toward or into the open ends thereof.
Different boiler makers have adopted various methods of arranging the fire tubes'in boilers, some of which are arranged in zig-l zag or staggered form,` others being arranged in vertical rows, some in horizontal rows, and still others in both horizontal or vertical rows as isthe ease in the boiler shown in the drawings and to facilitate the blowing of a boiler, the nozzles alining with the tubes of one row either vertical o`r horizontal, preferably the latter, are connected to. one feeder 17, while all of said feeders are in turn connected to a header 13.
The feeders. 17 are arranged within the chamber 9adjacent to the inside of the face of the doors 11 and 12 and are each connected through nipples 19 extending through holes 20 in the door 1l to the header 18 which is arranged exteriorly of said door 11, said nipples constituting supports for the feeders 17 and nozzles'l. A supply pipe 21.connected to said header 18 extends along Ithe front of said boiler to the pivots 13 of the door 11 and at which point in said supply pipe-a pivotal connection 22 is provided, the axis thereof alining with the axes of ibo pivots 13, whereby said door 11 may be swung upon its pivot without disturbing the connections for said tube blowing device.
Many types oli nozzles may be employed in a device of this character, but l preferably employ tubes much smaller in diameter than the feeders 17 and which are secured at one of their ends to said feeders, While their opposite ends terniinatent a slight distancetrom the ends of the tubes "i, the differences in diameter of said tubes resulting in a jet of steam of small volume, but oli' increased velocity the eil'ect ot which on the interior of the tubes 7 is to quickly remove all scales, dust or soot therefrom and to polish the interior surface thereof, performing this operation in a very short time. Furthermore by inclosing the nozzles 16 within the chamber 9, said nozzles may be operated While the boiler is in operation and the passage through said nozzles being very small and of quite a substantial length, the steam passing therethrough will be exposed to the heat passing through the chamber in which said nozzles are located, consequently the jet of steam discharged from said nozzles will be superheatcd and this being dry no injury will result from the Contact thereof with the tubes of the boiler, not` will the'fire be checked thereby to any extent.
By the arrangement. of the nozzles 16, there being one for each oit the tubes of the boiler and all of said nozzles being connected through their feeders 17, header 18 and supply pipe 21, all of said tubes may he blown simultaneously although such a method is not always practical owing to the amount of steam discharged into said boiler which is apt to. clog the saine and retard the discharge of the soot and soa es. The preferred method therefore is 'to blow one row or series ot' tubes at a time and this being accomplished while there a tire in the boiler, the escaping gases generated thereby will assist in the carrying ott' ot the `soot or scales from the tubesf beingq blown. lNhen it is necessary to get at the front tube sheet or the ends of the tubes to inspecter repair the same the door 12 is first swung upon its pivot 14 until clear of the ends of the feeders 17 after which the door 11 will be swung upon its ivOts 13 until the nozzles 16 carried therelij1 are entirely removed from the chamber 9.
Having; thus described my invention, whatwl claim and desire by Letters Patent to secure is:
1. The combination with a lire tube boiler having a door formed in two parts yand pivoled upon opposite sides ,of said boiler, of a nozzle directed into the end of each of the tubes of said boiler, feeders for said nozzles arranged ,inside of. said doors, a header ar ranged upon the outside of said doors, nipples extending through one of said door parts`- connecting said feeders with said header and constituting supports for said nozzles, a valve interposedbetween the end ot each of said nipples and said header, and :i tlcxible supply pipe connected with said header adapted to maintain said nozzles in operative connection therewith during the swinging' of the door upon vwhich said nozzles are mounted, upon its pivot. i
