To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, "Anrrroxs H. Grits, a citmen or the United States, residing at Clncago, 1n the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and usea 1 I111 Improvements in Oil-Cups; and Ldo specification oi iii-utters hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in,
the art to which it appertains to inalre and use the same.
This invention relates to oil cups and has for an object to provide an oil cup having a novel cover which will extend considerably beyond the body of the cup so that when the cover istilted to opnnposition the dust and the like which has accumulated on the cover will slide ofi from the cover and not be dropped into the oil cup.
A further object of the invention is to rovide an oil cop having the cover secured y a novel spring which'will normally hold the covertightly closed, but which will be relieved from tension upon the cover being completely opened and simply form a support for holding the cover in open position.
A further object of the invention is to provide an oil cup having a cover which may be both opened and closed by the spout of the oil can and furthermore when open will perinit of the oil being dropped down centrally into the cup from above so that the drops of oil will be visible to the oiler and thus give evidence that the proper amount of oil enters the cup.
With the above objects in view the invention consists of certain novel details of con struction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, it being understood that various modifications may be madein the minor details of const'roction within the scope of the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification :-Figure 1 is a side elevation of the oil cup showing the cover being opened. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the oil cup showing the cover in open position. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the oil cup showing the cover being closed. Fig. i is a plan view oi the oil cup. Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view taken on-the line 5-5 4. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the spring Reierrirs now to the drawing in which the spring like characters of reference ler parts, 10 designates the body of the oil cop the same being provided externally with wrench faces-1i and being provided below the wrench faces with external screw threads for screwing the cup into the-journal box.
The cover 13 is circular in outline and is provided with a marginal downwardly and inwardly curved flange iii to receive the spring. The spring 14: is formed oil a single l ngth of resilient wire preferably, and is substantially circular in general contour to snugly fit in the confining flange 1dof the cover. The ends 15 of the spring are d rooted in parallelism across the center of the spring and are terminally bent outwardly to provide gudgeons 16 which in openings 1? arranged near together and in alineincnt in the body of? the oil Notche 18 are formed in the top edge of the oil cup body to receive the free end of and cover the cover is closed.
To open the cover it is simply necessary to insert the oil. can spout underneath the edge of the cover as shown in Fig. 1 and raise the cover vertically, the spring being relieved of tension when the cover is nearly wide open, and when the-cover arrives at final open position the spring will have rotated on its gudgeons and will form simply a a. support for maintaining the cover open. The oil may be now dropped centrally into the oil cup as shown in Fig. 2'3 and will be visible to the oiler as it enters the cap. To
close the cup the spent oi the oil can is placed on the top face of the cover as shown v i in 1 Lg. 3 and the cover pressed down into position.
By virtue of the cover being of great-er hlngedly securing said cover in posiiiion owigwa across the center of 'the spring and termi- In testimony whreof, I afiix my signs nlslly' benlt outwardly wfithin thg borders ofl ture, in presence of two witnesses. I
