COLUMBIA PLANOGRAPH CB" WASHINGTON, D. C,
UNITED. STATES rarnn'r ormcn.
EDWARD RUFF, OF STEWARDSON, ILLINOIS.
INDICA'IING ATTACHMENT FOR BALING-PRESSES.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD RUFF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stewardson, in the county of Shelby and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Indicating Attachments for Baling-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to attachments for baling presses, and it has for its object to produce a simple and efficient indicator which may be readily applied to and used in connection with any hay press of ordinary conventional construction for the pur pose of indicating when a bale of a certain predetermined length has been formed so that the operator may then insert a partition board into the press, thus enabling bales of equal length to be produced without resorting to mere guesswork.
A further object of the invention is to produce a device of the character described which shall be simple in construction, which shall not be in the way of the operator, which will occupy but little room and which shall require no alteration in the construction of the press itself.
Vith these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the in vention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no' limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claim may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawings,Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side view showing a portion of a hay press to which the invention has been applied for operation. Fig. 41 is an end view of the same. Fig. 5 is a side view of a press to which the invention has been applied in a somewhat difierent manner. Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 6-6 in Fig. 5.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 1, 1913.
Application filed May 3, 1912. Serial No. 694,795.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
The frame of the improved attachment includes an upright 1 having laterally extending arms or brackets 2, 8 affording bearings for a vertical shaft 4: carrying at its lower end a toothed wheel 5. The upright has a bearing wherein a shaft 6 is sup ported for rotation, said shaft carrying a bevel pinion 7 meshing with a bevel pinion 8 at the upper end of the vertical shaft 4:. The shaft 6 also carries an arm 9 constituting an indicator. The upright 1 is extended upwardly above the shaft 6 carrying the indicatorarm 9 so as to form an arm 9 with which, as the shaft 6 rotates, the indicator arm 9 will be in registry once during each rotation of the shaft 6. The upwardly extended end or arm 9 of the upright 1 will thus constitute a fixed point of departure which, when the indicator arm 9 again passes into registry therewith, will indicate to the observer that a rotation has been completed.
An upright 1 supports a bracket 10 reinforced by a brace 11 and having apertured ears or lugs 12 for the passage of a supporting member, such as a rod 13, extending from a post 14 that is bolted on the press box 15, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. Under the slightly modified construction illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6, the post 14 supports a yoke 15 pivotally engaging the apertured ears 12 so as to enable the lower ends of the upright 1 of the shaft 4 carrying the toothed wheel 5 to swing outwardly from the side of the press box to a non-engaging and non obstructing position, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 6.
In the operation of this invention, the improved indicating device is applied to the press in such fashion that the toothed wheel 5 will operate through one of the slots in the sides of the press box and engage the bale which is in process of formation. The parts may, for convenience, be so proportioned that the toothed wheel 5 will have to make two or more revolutions in order to cause a single rotation of the shaft 6 carrying the arm or indicator 9. Then said arm or indicator assumes a predetermined position, for instance, an upright position in alinement with the upright 1, the operator is advised that a bale of a pre- 5 length may be formed.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new, is 2- An indicating device for baling presses comprising,.in combination with a baling -.press, a frame pivotally connected with said press and including an upright having brackets, a shaft supported for rotation in said brackets and having at one end a toothed gage wheel engaging the bale in process of formation through a slot in the press box, a counter shaft journaled in the upright, miter gearing connecting the counter shaft with the gear wheel carrying shaft, and an indicator arm or pointer carried by the counter shaft and lying adjacent to the upright, said upright being extended above the counter shaft to form a stationary arm registering with the inclicator arm at one stage of the rotation of the counter shaft carrying the said indicator arm.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
