WASI-IABLE SLIPIPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 1, 1913.
Application filed April 2, 1912. Serial No. 688,084.
To all wit-0m it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR HALE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rowlandsville, in the county of Cecil and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washable Slippers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to washable slippers, and has for its object to produce a footv covering of this nature, in which an inner sole or stiffening member may be readily inserted and withdrawn when it is desired to wash the slipper, and also to provide a convenient means for inserting and withdrawing said stifiening member.
lVith these objects in view, the invention consists in the novel details of construction and combinations of parts more fully hereinafter disclosed and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which like numerals designate like parts in all the views, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sec tional view of a slipper made in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1; Fig. i is a side elevational view of the parts shown in Fig. 1, and illustrating the side opening 10; Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4t; and Fig. 6 is a bottom plan view, on a reduced scale, of the invention.
1 indicates the slipper pro-per, 2 an inner sole, 3 an outer sole, a a seam or bead, which may follow around the inner circum-- ference of the slipper, and 5 an inner sole or stiffening member, adapted to give firmness to the sole proper of the slipper.
The outer sole or wall 3 of the slipper is provided with a slit 6, near its forward portion, and is further provided with an ex tension 7, which extends forward through said slit and on top of the extreme forward portion 8 of the said outer wall or solo. The said inner wall 2 and outer wall 3 of the sole proper form a pocket between them, into which the slit 6 constitutes an opening, and the said stiffening member 5 may be thrust through said slit 6 into said pocket, and occupy the position shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. When it is desired to wash the slipper, the said stiffening member 5 is withdrawn, and the remaining portions of the slipper being made of a suitable washable fabric, the same may be washed and suitably dried, when the said stiffening member may be reinserted, and the slipper rendered ready for use. In withdrawing and replacing the stiffening member 5, it is convenient, of course, to withdraw the extension or tongue 7 from the slit, and to reinsert the same underneath the stiffening member when the latter is in place. In addition to the slit 6 I provide a side opening 10 into the pocket between the inner wall 2 and outer wall 3, which opening is found convenient for inserting the fingers to guide the stiffening member 7 when inserting the latter, and it may be in some cases even used for inserting the. entire stiffening member. By providing the slit 6 at the forward portion of the slipper, as indicated, the seam or unevenness produced by said slit is preferably thrown forward of the ball of the foot, and there:-
fore is not noticeable in wearing the slipper.
lVhat I claim is A slipper made of washable fabric provided with a sole member having inner and outer Walls forming a pocket between them; said sole member provided with an opening into said pocket near the toe portion of said slipper, and with another opening into said pocket on its side, adapted to facilitate the ready introduction into and the removal from said pocket of a stiffening member, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
ARTHUR HALE.
