FRANQOIS XAVIER DES RIVIERES, OF MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA.
ADJUSTABLE BEST FOR RATCHET-BRACES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 1, 1913.
Application filed August 31, 1912. Serial No. 718,150.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANooIs XAvinn Dns Riviimns, of the city of Montreal, in the county of Hochelaga, in the Province of Quebec, in the Dominion of Canada, head clerk, have invented certain new and use-- described in the accompanying drawings that form part of the same.
The objects of the invention are to provide an adjustable rest of simple design and cheap to manufacture. It will save time and labor, will provide more comfort in the operation of the tool and is very easy to adjust for operation.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a cross sec tional view through the joists of a floor, showing a ratchet brace in operation and the adjustable rest in position. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the device. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through a modified form.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
l is a flooring having the joists 2.
3 is a cylinder outwardly threaded to receive the disk 4 which is similarly threaded and having at one end the flange 5 projecting outwardly and the boss or head 6. 7 is a rod threaded with a very coarse thread 8 engaging a corresponding thread 9 in the cylinder 3, said rod 7 having the nonthreaded part or handle 10, by which it may be adjusted. In Fig. 3 is shown a similar cylinder having just a portion of the inside threaded to receive the rod 7.
11 is a ratchet brace having at one end the bit 12, here shown as engaging the joists 2, and at the other end, the projecting finger 13. The brace shown in the drawings is one of well known design and forms no part of the present invention.
15 are sockets, in the end of rod 7, adapted to receive the head 16 of finger 13.
It will be readily understood that it will particularly be useful in boring joints to introduce the heating and electrical systems in houses.
In the operation of this invention, a hole of convenient size must first be made, through the first joist. The cylinder 3 is introduced therein and the disk or looking nut 4 is then threaded thereon, thus holding the cylinder 3 tightly to the joist. The
ratchet brace is placed in position for boring the other joists, the rod 7 #lS adjusted by screwing or unscrewing it, so that the finger 13 will entirely rest in the slot 15. Then the boring can be made, and the same operation must be performed with each joist to be bored.
It must be understood that alterations can be made in the shape and construction of this article, without departing from the spirit of the invention and that the forms disclosed in the accompanying drawings are only preferred and thought to be more adaptable for the purpose.
What I claim as my invention is In an adjustable rest of the class described, a cylinder having a flange and a boss or head at one end thereof, a thread on the outside, a disk threaded thereon, a coarse thread inside said cylinder, a rod having a corresponding thread, one end of which forms a handle and sockets in both ends thereof, said rod threading in said cylinder.
Signed at the city of Montreal, in the Dominion of Canada, this 23d day of August, 1912.
