. Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 1, 1913.
Application filed May 22, 1912. Serial No. 699,042;
To all whom it may concern: a
Be it known that we, ORA M. LOCKWOOD and ADISON AQS'roU'r, citizens of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Impro vements in Switch-Locks, of which the follow-- ing is a specification,'reference being had to theaccompanying drawings. 1
simple cylindrical switch plug is sufficient to break the circuit. Inasmuch as a conducting substance of proper size may be inserted in the switch it often occurs thatisuch vehicles are operated without theknowledge of the owners, by t-hoseu-nauthorized to use 5 the same, and such vehicles are often stolen owing to' the facility with which such switches can be operated by unauthorized persons.
A further object of the invention is to provide a switch of such construction as to afford in every instance a broad and perfect contact and which is atall times positively protected and locked from unauthorized persons.
A still further object of the invention is to rovide a switch of the'abo-ve character which will possess advantages in points of efliciency and durability, is inexpensive to manufacture and at the same time is simple in construction and operation.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel, features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter-more fully described, pointed out in the claim, and
shown in the accompanying drawings in which, Figure 1 is an elevation of our improved key operated switch. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation. Fig, 3 is. a sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig Referring more particularly to the draw- I ings, 1 indicates a cylindrical casing which is formed of rubber or other suitable insulating material and which is adapted to support the several parts of the switch and lock attachment. The numerals 2 and 3 indicate metallic contacts secured to the face i of the'block and forming terminals of the lead wires 4 and 5 which are connected to This invention relates to new and useful upon the post 9 and arranged between the head of the post and the washer-l3, the
outer end of the lever being provided with a suitable finger hold 14 so that the same may be easily swung to engage either of the contacts 2 and 3.
Arranged within the casing at one side thereof is a third contact 15 which is con nectedv by the lead wires 16 and 17 to the batteries and the magneto respectively. A suit-able lock casing 18 formed of any suitable contact material is arranged within the casing having one of its longitudinal edges disposed in alinement with the opening 10 in the post 9 The key 19 for operating the lock, fits in the key seat 20 and is adapted to be rotated to project the bolt 21 and engage the same with the contact 15. I
Inconnecting either of the contacts 2 and 3 with the contact 15 to complete a circuit, the plug 22 is inserted within the opening 10 of the post 9 until the end of the same engages with theloc'k casing 18, the
lever .12 is then turned until the same en gages with either of the contacts 2 and 3, and in order to complete the circuit, the
key 19 is rotated within the seat 20 projecting. the bolt 21 to engage th same with Y the contact 15 andin' this manner either of the contacts 2 and Scan be readily connected with either the batteries 6 or the magneto 7 respectively.
From the above description taken in connection with the drawings, it will be readily 'apparentthat a through connection between the contacts 2 and 3. and the batteries and magneto 6 an 7 respectively cannot be completed witho t the use ofthe key 19 which will be in goss'esion of the owner atfall times, and it will be seen that the switch cannot be operated by unauthorized persons.
Vhat We claim is An electric switch, comprising a casing provided with a face having an opening cxtending theretl'irough, terminals carried by the casing, a'switch lex er movable around said opening an axis and engageable with said terminals, 21 contact member mounted in the casing and designed for electrical connection to said terminals, a lock casing fastened Within the first named casing and formed of conducting material overlapping the inner end of said opening, whcreby a plug inserted in through said opening will our signatures in the presence of two \\'it-' ORA M.
