BOX-COVER FASTENER AND REINFORCEMENT.
. Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 15, 1912. Serial No. 690,984.
Patented.- Apr.1, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be itlmown that I, MA'nsHALL C. R oonns, a citizen of'the United States, residing at Williams, in the county of Colusa and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Box-Cover Fasteners and Reinforcements, of which the following 18 a specification.
My invention relates to a box cover fastening and reinforcin device. a
It consists essentia y of attachments at opposite ends of a cover, which attachments are adapted to interlock when the box is closed, and to which a seal may be aflixed. The interlocking attachments are extended so as to form reinforcements to strengthen the box ends and cover.
It also comprises details of construction which will be more fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the box, showing the cover partly removed. Fig. 2 is a perspective view (partly broken away, showing the other en of the box. Fig, 3 is a cross-section of the end of the box shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a crosssection of the other end of the box.
For the purpose of rapidly and securely fastening covers upon boxes or crates of various descriptions, I have shown interlocking devices which may be readily closed and secured.
As shown in the drawings, A is a box and B'represents the cover. The sides of the box extend beyond the ends and have vertical cleats 2 secured to the box ends and flush with the projectin ends of the sides. Across the ends 0 the top are similar cleats 3.
At one end of the box is secured a metal plate 4, the ends of which extend beneath the cleats 2 and serve as a reinforce. The lower edge of the part 4 is secured to the end of the box as shown, The upper end is turned over into a hook-shape, as shown at 5; this portion rojecting just above the upper edge of the x end. The cover portion B has a similar sheet of metal 6 which extends beneath the cleat 3 and is secured therewith. The projecting edge is bent downwardly then with a reverse curve or hook portion 7; this hook portion 7 and the portion 5 of the fixed member being only of a length equal to the distance between the vertical cleats 2. The engagement of these two hook portions is made by lifting the opposite end of the box cover until these' two can be hooked together, then the cover is let down and the hooks 5 and 7 engage and hold this end of the cover firmly in place. The opposite end of the box has a similar-construction to that just-v described, and a metallic strip 8 is secured beneath the transverse cleat'3 on the top of this end of thebox with the extensions beneath the cleat to reinforce this end of the cover. The part 8 has an outwardly turned hook portion 8*, and these portions turn at right angles, as shown at 9, which serve as guides in closing the cover; these portions passing down between the vertical cleats 2 at this end of the box, thus insuring the cover being properly placed.
Upon the end C of the box is fixed a metal plate, which extends sufiiciently below the top so that when its lower edge is fastened to the side of the box, the upper portion will have a certain amount of elasticity and movement to enable it to engage with the member 8, which is secured to the end of the top of the box, as previously described. The ends of the lower part of this metal portion 10 extend above the vertical cleats 2 and serve as braces. Therefore, as the upper end is elastic and movable, when this end of the top is pressed down the two hook ortions of the members 8 and 1.0 will inter ock and engage and thus hold the cover in place. In order to secure this device, a tongue 11 is shown as secured to the upper edge of the end C and projecting through a slot in the spring plate 10. This tongue has a hole or opening through which a seal may be a plied, thus insuring safety of the loc The box may be opened when the seal has been removed by springing the engaging members 8 and 10 until the interlocking tongues are separated, when the cover may be lifted about the opposite en aging interlocking ends until they "are disengaged and the cover can be removed. In this manner I am able to provide a secure cover and to reinforce the box end cover in such a manner that the edges will not be damaged by ordinary rough usage.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. A box cover securing and reinforcing device, said device consisting of plates extending horizontally across the ends of the secured to the box ends and the cover ends respectively, having hook-shaped elastic engaging ends, and a strip thereto to extend 15 through one of said end plates and having a place for a seal attached thereto.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
