Application filed March 13, 193.1. Serial No. 616L133.
of which the following description, in eonnection with the accompanying drawings, is
a specification, like letters on the drawingsrepresenting like carts.
In numerous kinds of work it isdesirable to concentrate light upon relatively small. spaces and upon difi'erent spaces at different "times. as in the case of successive operations .011 sepzrrsted parts of the work.
My invention provides a lamp supportwhich can be instantly adjusted by simple manipulation to bring the lamp directly opposits andin proximity to any desired 29 oint, and ineens to securely clamp the same in such position.
The invention will be understood from the following description in connection with v the accompanying drawings, wherein,
Figure 1 is a side. elevation of my improved laznp support; Fig; 2 is a sectional view on line 2T2 of Fig. 1, the lamp can rying rod being shown broken away in elevetion'; andFig. 3 is :1 Vertical section on line 33 of Fig. 1, the standard in elevetion broken away.
A support or standard 1, shown round and tubular, has fixed thereto or integral I therewith at one end a. figmge l? by which it may be secured either vertically, or horizontally as to a side well of the room, by suitable bolts or otherwise. A. split clamp block 2 has o socket formed between the parts thereof to receive said support, and another socket recess at one side extending at right angles'to the standard socket to receive around bar 3. A screw bolt 4: having' a hook 5 at one end formed to fit around the rod 3 is passed through a hole therefor screw bolt has a wing not 6 threaded to the free end thereof, which being screwed against the adjacent side of the block, will simultaneously draw the two parts of the clamp block together to grip the some against the standard 1 and at the some time .draw the hook- 5 against the bar 3 and hold the same firmly to its socket inthe clamp the block 2 fixedly to the standard 1 to sein the two parts of the clamp block. Thispost, thus by a single adjustment clamping cure it against angular and vertical movement, and simultaneously clamping the rod 3 to the block against longitudinal and angular displacements.
A block 7 constituting one port of is. second clamping device, has a, socket to receive the bar and a slot 8 intersecting said socket to enable the sides of the block to be drawn against said her. This block is formed with a plane face at one side to fit 9, as shown at 11. The block 9 has 9. socket recess extending thercacross to receive the lemp carrying rod 13, and all these ports are adapted to be firmly drawn and clamped against the corresponding face on s block together by a screw bolt 10 having a hook 12 at one end to engage around the rod 13, this screw bolt passing transversely through the block paits 7 and 9 and having its other end threaded to receive a wing nut 14 adapted to be screwed against the adjacent face of the block 7. For many epplications l.
have found that it is convenient to cit lamp-holding rod 13 bent at an acute angle,
as shown at 15, but obviously this is a, mere matter of convenience and not an essentiel of the invention in its broader aspects.
t is obvious that as the wing-nut 14 is loosened, the lamp maybe moved to any desired angle whatsoever and to any desired position within wide limits this being accomplished by the longitudinal or anguler adjustment of the 'rod'l3 in its socket; the relative angular adjustments of the blocksi, about the screw bolt 10 as on csis; together with the longitudinal and angular adjustment of the block '7 relative to the her 3; and that all the parts involved in these several coiip-erstive adjustments may be instantly clamped by the turning up 01 the singlewing' nut 1 1. The range of adjustments thus allordedis further multiplied by the longitudinal and angular adjustments of the rod 3 and standard 1 yelw, tive to the block 2, as before explained. The lamp can be, directed to any desired angle whatsoever and drawn lengthwise tobring it into close proximity to different arts of the work successivel b c the ns- P Y .e
nipulation of a single conveniently placed Wing not i l for the nsu'alchengesof position. necessary, While further cumulative. adjustments are I wing not 6, this tter being moreover useful for semi-permanent setting of the bar 3 l g ossible by loosening the to its oaability of holding a lamp in the various osired adjustments, this is merely illustrative and that the device is for holding a wide variety of articles or parts which it may be desired to adjust to diderent determinate positions, such as tele7 adapted phones, mirrors, and the like, and that therefore the terms lamp and lamp holder as used in the appended claims are merely illustrative and are intended to include any article or appliance which is adapted to be supported by the device as set forth.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. A device of the kind described, comprising a support, a member engaged therewith for endwise and angular movement, a second member in swiveled relation to the first member, a lamp holder engaged with said second member for angular and longitudinal movement with relation with said second member, and a bolt having a hook at one end for engaging said lamp holder arranged. to constitute an axis for swiveling said first and second members and mounted part of the;
actress to clamp all of said parts rigidly in difierent .an'axis for said swiveled adjustment between said first and second members.
3. A device of the kind described, comprising a support, a block having a socket toreceive the same with a capability ofangular and straight line adjustment, said block being split to facilitate clamping action against the support, a second block fitted to said first block for relative swiveling adjustment, a holder for a lamp or the like fitted to a socket in said. and a bolt with a hook 'at its end passed through said block with the hook engaging said holder and adapted to rigidly clamp all of said parts and also to constitute a swivel axis for said two blocks.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES H. NICHOLS.
