Speccation of Letters Patent.

Application led April 19, 1912. Serial N c. 691,786.
To aU whom t may concern.' 'i
Be it known that I, HERMAN A. HANSON,
a citizen of the United States, anda. resi. y
dent of the city of Chicago, county 'of Cook,
and State of Illinois, have invented certainforming a part of this specification, and inv which,
Figure l 1s a vertical transverse sectlon of a brush equipped with Aa moistening de` vice embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the construction shown in Fig. 1. t
The preferred form of construction, v as illustrated in the drawing comprises a brush consisting of a back 1 which is elongated, rectangular in form, bristles 2 being secured to the under sidel of said back 1 in any well known manner. i
Mounted upon the upper side of the back 1 is an elongated liquld tank 3, the upper side of said tank being provided with a screw threaded filling plug 4 through which access may be gained to the interior ofthe tank to lill, or empty the same. A packing `5 coperates with the plug4 to insure a tight connection and prevent leakage. Depending lfrom the ends of the tank 3 are tubes 6 which pass through perforations 6 provided in the ends of back 1.
- Secured by means of staples or other suitable securing devices 7 upon the under side of the back-1 is a strip 8 of absorbent material, felt being preferably Aused in this connection. The respective ends of the strip 8 project through slots 9 formed in the lower ends of the tubes 6, said strip ends be# ing .clamped in position -in said slots by means of screw plugs 10 which are 4threaded in the lower ends of said tubes, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. Leakage from vthe tubes past the plugs 10 is prevented b means of packing disks 11 formed prefera ly of cork which lit snugly within saidl tubes, said disks being secured by means of screws '12 upon the inner ends of said plugs.
With the'arrangement set forth, it will be seen, `that the liquid contained in the' tank 3 will drainv from lthe latter through the tubes 6 whence the same will be absorbed by the ends of the strip 8, passing through lthe latter by reason of the absorbing quali kties of the strip, or by reason of capillary attraction. Through the adjustment of the plugs 10 1t will be seen that the flow of liquid from the pipes 6 through the ends of Ithe .strip 8 mayl be regulated, loosening -of said strip ends by said plugs-permitting of a greater flow of liquid therethrough and tightening of said screws to more securely` clamp the strip ends restricting the' flow vthrough thelatter. The moisture absorbed by the strip 8 is conveyed to the bristles by contact of the latter with said strip, {iexing 'of said bristles causing the compression of said strip which facilitates the transfer bf moisture onto the bristles, and so that the v supply of moisture to said'bristles will be automatically controlled, the supply of moisture to the bristles being increasedwhen the brush is in use; Y
The moistening of the bristles of the brush causes the moistening of the dust into con- .tact with which the bristles are brought and so that when the vbrush is in use the flying of dust about the room will be prevented.
A moistening device of the construction `set forth may be installed in a brush simultaneously with the manufact-ure thereof, or the same may be attached to a brush already in use by simply forming openings 6 in the back for the reception of pipes 6.
While I have illustratedl and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention'into effect this is capable of variation and modification without' def parting from the spirit of th'e invention.
I, therefore, do not wish to `be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and'modications as come within the scope of the appended claims, and although I have shown my device applied to a brush it is understood that the same may as readily be applied lto a broom Ior like device, if desired.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to securev by Letters Patent is:
.1. In a brush moistener, the combination with e brnsii comprising a bask and bristies secured in and projecting from said beek, of an eiongated liquid tank et the upper side of said back; tubes depending from the ter minais of said tank to a position between seid bristiesglet strip of absorbent material arranged between said bristles, the ends oi said strip passing through slots provided in seid tubes into the interiors of the latter; and means at the lower ends of said tubes for adjustebiy securing seid strip ends in said siots, substantially as described.
2. in a brusnmoistener, the combination with a brush comprising a back and bristies secured in and projecting from said back', of' a iiquid tank mounted on seid back; depending tubes at the ends of said brush leading from said tank to a position between 'intimes seid bristles; e strip'A of absorbent inateriai arranged between said bristles, the ends of lsaid strip engaging slots formed in the io Wer ends of seid tubes; plugs threaded in said ends of said tubes adapt-ed to eieinp said strip ends in said slots and to control the oW' of iiquid through said slots; and means provided et the inner ends of said plugs 'for engagement With the inner surfaces of said tubes tov prevent leakage, substantially as described.
In testiinony whereof I have signed my naine to this specification in the presence oft t-Wo subscribing Witnesses- HERMAN A. HANSON.
