Description
;'l 'o all 'rl/hom 'lt may concern: A, Be it known that I, IGNAZIO ALLEGRETTI, ot' the laad swag ,aten-t mit.
IGNAZIO ALLEGRETTI, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Paten-t No. 105,763, dated July 2d, 1870.
`IBIPIROVELIE'I' IN REFRIGERATOR.
The Schedule referred to these LettnrsPabent andmakingpart or the same.
city 'and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania., have invented a new 4and usefu'l Improvementin Refrigerators; 'and I do hereby declare thatV the followiugis a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation ofA the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and tothe letters of reference marked thereon.
The object of my invention .is to construct a refrigerator whereby an intense degree of cold is pro- Vduced with asmall quantity of ice and certain chemicals combined therewithfso that perishablearticles placed in it are retained in a. frozen'state, and water,`
when placed within it, will freeze and form solid icc. Thus the refrigerator will form' its own ice after beingl once filled, and is so regulated vthat the quantity will` be sncient for daily consumption, and supply the necessary amount to retain a uniform low temperature.
if Figure -l is a vertical section of my-improveiuent in refrigerators.
rior with a series of shelves, S, placed one above anframe, F, the case being made somewhat larger, so;
as to form a surrounding ice-space, I. r
The case C is'inclosed `in anouter casing or' b ox, B, of' larger dimensions, with the intervening space,
O, filled with any non-conducting material, or allowed to remain vacant, soas to permit of a free circulation of air.
Resting on the upper edge of the case C,'and tting closely against the inner sides of the box B, is a cover, R, provided in the center with an opening, in which is iitted a metallic or wooden trame, E.
Thelower' edges of the said irame rest on the*-` top oi' the chamber A, and is closed by means .of the cover D.
Y The chamber Avis provided at its upper' part with an opening, N, the cover J of which'passcs down through the frame E,and ts perfectly air-tight over the opening. s
'lhis pai-trof the chamber is also provided with a rim or flange, G, which surrounds theoutside of the frame, so as to assist in forming a tight joint, and allow for the passage ot' any water which may accumulate `on the outside ofthe cover J. vf In the lower part of the case C is formed an opening, L, which communicates with the space 0, and
is covered 4bymeans of a perforated plate, P, made so as to be easily removed when. it becomes necessary to clean it and open the perforatious The said opening is used when the space 0 rcmains vacant, and allows the water caused by the melting of thejice to pass ito the'lower part ot' it,- from wh'ence it is drawuol at iutervalsthrough the pipe H, secured in the box B, this pipe being sup-' plied with a screw-cap, cock, or any suitable device.
f When the space Ov is lillcd, a pipe, H', is passed from the outsideo'f the box B,aud connects with the ice-spaced, so that the waste water will pass A through it.
t The upper'part of the box B Ais closed by means -of a tight-fitting corea-K, which may have an open-. v,ing lmade in it directly over the inside-cover, D, so
that communication may be had with the interior of the chamber A without raising the cover K.
. By the arrangement of the frame E, as above described, the covers J and D maybe removed without exposingthe ieerplaced in the-space Ito a warmer' V atmosphere.. Figure 2 is a top view of same, with itscovcr opened 'FIt' desired, auopening can be made in the side instead of on top o f the refrigerator, and inclosed in the same manner with the fiame E and covers J and D. (The covers in thiscase are supportedlon lwifiuges.)
The Apoints in the covers are all made perfectly airtight, by means of annel or rubber strips placed around their edges.
.lhe operation is as follows:
Provisions, fruits, confections, and other perishable.
articles may be placed in the interior of the chamberv A, (and, when necessary, separate compartments may fbe provided for the purpose,) and the vspace rI filled with ice and salt, so that the entire surface of the Achamber will be exposed to it, thus producing a very low temperature in its interior, and freeze the articles placed therein, and it water' is placed in the pans S at the time of inserting the other articles, ,it will be frozen into solid ice.
f It' it is desired to poduce an intense degree of cold 'in a very shortvtinie', chemicals are employed in coni- -bination with the ice and salt, although I do not claim them.
P'WhatI claim as my improvement in refrigerators, and desire to secure a patent for, is
1. The case O, provided withiframe E and covers D and K, in combination with chamber A, provided with cover J and rim or flange G, and having intel'- vening ice-space I, all constructed and arranged as herein shown and described.
2. In co'lnbiuation with the above, the outer box B, provided with cover K, as and for the purpose specilied and shown.
A1n testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. Witnesses: IGNAZIO ALLEGRE'ITI.
ISAAC R. OAKORD, FRANK S'roUT.
