Description
' UNITED STATES PATENT oFFIoE.
MAX DETHLEFFS, OF STUTTGABT, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR TO CARL F. W. SCHNEEMANN,
- OF HANOVER, GERMANY. v
PROCESS FOR OBTAI INING A MAT-SURFACE ON PRINTED MATTER WITH GLOSSY SURFACE.
11,057,624. Specification of Letters Patent.
' Application filed June 10, 1911.
No Drawing.
To all whom it may concern: 0
Be it known that I, Max DETHLEFFS, residing at Immenhoferstrasse 27, Stuttgart, Germany, printer, have invented a certain new and useful Process for Obtaining a Mat-Surface on Printed Matter with G lossy Surface, of which the following is a specification. w I
This invention relates to a process for removing the gloss from impressions, more particularly from colored illustrations, printed'on glossy paper or cardboard with the customary printing colors, and to give such impress ons a mat surface resembling that of an engravure.
The essential feature of the improved process according to my present invention consists in applying to the previously printed glossy impression, a paste of which the main constituents are soap and drying oils which are partially saponified by ammonia, along with an organic or inor anic substance adapted to produce a mat e ect.
The coloring matter used in the printing need not be of special composition, any good printing color for illustrations being suitable, but to obtain the best results it is to be recommended that the coloring matter employed should contain slightly less drying agent than usual.
A paste of the'following composition has proved very efiicient, and is given by way of example:
325 parts Hanko or wood oil.
These ingredients are intimately mixed to Serial No. 632,513.
form a paste of thoroughly uniform activity,
which in carrying out the process, is coated V or printed over the glossy surface of the paper or cardboard, the dry hydrate of alumina forming the filling material.
To overcome the odor of the wood-oil it is preferable to add a small amount of perfume to the mixture. The paste has the property of loosening the printing color to some extent and of removing its gloss, so that a soft, engravure like effect is obtained. The paste may obviously be colored or tinted as desired.
My improved process is suitable for printing inmore than one color.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A process for obtaining a mat surface on printed matter with glossy surface, consistingin applying to the previously printed glossy impression a paste of which the main constituents are soap and drying oils which are partially saponified along with a filling material thereby loosening the printing color to some extent and removing its gloss.
2. A process for obtaining a mat surface on printed matter with glossy surface, consisting in applying to the previously printed glossy impression a paste of which the main constituents are soap and dryin oils which are partially saponified along wlth a filling material and a coloring material thereby loosening the printing color to some extent and removing its gloss.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ERNEST EMENMANN, FRIDA KLAIBER.
