ADJUSTABLE SPUR.
Application filed March 11, 1912.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 1, 1913.
Serial No. 682,855.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES B. COPLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Camden, in the county of Lewis and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful Adjustable Spur, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in adjustable spurs, the primary object of the invention being the provision of an adjustable spur which is readily attached to heels of different sizes.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a partly plan View and a partly horizontal sectional view of the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a section of the same, taken on the line w-m of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the spur proper, which as shown is made in two members which when secured together by means of the screw 5, form a centrally and rearwardly projecting arm 2, the terminals of which are outwardly bent and spaced to receive the pintle or journaling stud 5 for the rotary rowel 3. The forward or heel embracing terminals 4 of this spur are provided with two apertures 9 in each terminal thereof for the reception of the securing screw 10 which adjustably secures the heel engaging members 7 which constitute the adjustable ends of the heel .embracing terminals 4.
Each of the respective members 7 is provided with a socketed portion, which is split as at 7 at opposite sides so as to produce resilient clamping terminals to fit upon and engage the ends of the terminals 4. The
two apertures 9 are provided in the ends of the terminals 4, one of which at a time is disposed for registration with the alined apertures 8 formed in the socketed portion of the member 7, a screw 10 being provided to enter such alined apertures and lock the member 7 upon the end of the terminal 4.
The detachable and adjustable members 7 are each provided as shown in Fig. 2, at their extreme outer ends with means for attaching the usual straps for securing the spur to the heel of the shoe, the same comprising the two parallel slots 13 with the spud 12, the strap 11 as clearly shown engaging the spud 12 to properly prevent the strap from slipping when the spur is properly attached. This particular structure of the ends of the members 7 is in reality a buckle-like tongue and slot connection for the attachment of the strap in the usual manner.
The socket forming and adjunctive members 7 may be replaced by solid or non socket forming members or portions and the solid arms or lateral portions of the terminals 4 may be formed hollow or socket like to receive the solid port-ion of the adjunctive member 7 without departing from the spirit of the present invention.
What is claimed is:
1. A spur having, two spaced portions, an adjustable extension for each portion having a slot to embrace the respective terminals of the spaced portions, the slot of each extension dividing the latter in two, the resulting branches conjointly forming a split-socket whose walls are measurably resilient, and means applied to said socket for engaging the terminals.
2. A spur, including adjustable extensions, each having a slotted end portion, the slots thereof dividing the same in two, the resulting branches conjointly forming a split-socket whose wallsare measurably resilient and are provided with screw receiving apertures, rowel carrying members whose inner ends are received within the sockets and are provided with apertures,- an adjusting screw threaded fastening insert-ible through said apertures in the split In testimony that I claim the foregoing socket and through said apertures of the as my own, I have hereto afiixed my signa- I rowel carrying members, the tightening acture in the presence of two witnesses.
