NOEL ARMSTRONG, OF BILLINGS, MONTANA.
lIPE-WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 25, 1913.
Application filed February 15, 1912. Serial No. 677,739.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, NOEL ARMSTRONG, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Billings, in the county of Yellowstone and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pipe wrenches and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a strong and durable wrench which will not slip either from the pipe or from its position when in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a pipe wrench in which one of the jaws or members of the wrench is provided with a pair of claws which engage the floor or bench for prevent-ing movement of the wrench while in use.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pipe wrench made in accordance with my invention and showing a pipe held by the jaws of the wrench; and Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the wrench with the jaws closed.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral designates one of the members of the wrench, said member having a curved and serrated jaw 2 and an enlarged end 3 serrated as at 4 and 5. A handle 6 extends from the member 1 and pivoted upon a pin 7 is the other member 8 of the wrench. The member 8 is formed with two spaced side portions 9 connected together by a cross bar 10 and provided with two curved downwardly eX- tending claws 11. The jaw member 1 is pivoted between the spaced portions 9 of the member 8, as shown. The two portions 9 are connected together at their front endby a cross bar 12 which has an extended portion 13 serrated as at 15. The jaw member 8 is provided with serrated jaws 16 which are adapted to clamp a pipe 17 upon opposite sides from the jaw 2. Extending guides 18 are formed on the member 8, said guides adapted to engage the opposite sides of the member 1 when the jaws are closed. The serrated face 15 of the projection 13 is adapted to cooperate with the serrated portion 4 for clamping small rods for holding the same.
In operation, the claws 11 are engaged in the floor or bench and the pipe is held be tween the two jaws by pulling backward upon the handle 6, as will be obvious upon reference to the drawing.
My pipe wrench is strong and durable, will hold a pipe rigidly while it is being threaded or connected to another pipe section on account of the claws 11 which engage the bench or the floor to prevent the tool from slipping.
I claim:
The herein described pipe wrench comprising two members pivotally connected together one of said members having a curved serrated jaw provided with an enlarged outer end, said member having a handle projecting therefrom, and the other member comprising a jaw having a curved serrated surface, a cross-bar near each end of said member, one of said cross-bars being eX- tended to form a stop against said enlarged end, said other member having claws to engage the floo-r, and one of the cross-bars being roughened to preventthe operators foot from slipping when holding the claws engaged with the floor.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
NOEL ARMSTRONG.
