MEANS FOR PREVENTING FROST FROM FORMING ON WINDOWS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 25, 1913.
Application fi1ed April 19; 1911. Serial No. 622,067.
To all whom it may concern Be it. known that 1, JAMES T. Prrrs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Middlesboro, in the county of Bell and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Means for Preventing Frost from Forming on Windows, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in means for preventing frost from forming on windows, the object being to provide a device, whereby cold air may be conducted to the inner side of a window.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device which is exceedingly simple and cheap in construction, and one which can be readily placed in position or removed therefrom.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device which is especially adapted to be used in connection with locomotive cab windows, it of course being understood that the same can be used in connection with show windows, the main object of the invention being to prevent frost from forming on the window by ventilating the same so as to maintain the inner face of the window at the same temperature as the outer face.
Another object of my invent-ion is to provide novel means for controlling the supply of air, whereby the air can be completely cut off if desired.
-With these objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification:-l*igure l is a front view of my improved device. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section ofthe upper portion of the window. Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 33 of Flg. 2. 1 1g. 4 15 an elevation of a modlfication.
In the drawing A indicates the sash of a cab window, 13 the pane which is secured therein in the ordinary manner. The upper and. lower rails of the sash are provided with circular openings in which are secured pipes D provided with funnel shaped ends D, said pipes being secured in position within the frame by suitable fastening means as shown at E, whereby they will be in a rigid position at all times. The funnel shaped ends are provided with pivoted caps G which are operated by rods H having rack portions H which areadapted to engage plates arranged on the sash adjacent openings through which the rods pass, whereby said caps can be operated from the inside of the cab in order to open or close the same to increase or decrease the volume of cold air passing through the same for the purpose later described.
Arranged over the inner ends of the pipes D are coupling members J carried by the ends of a perforated delivery pipe K which is provided with a series of openings on its inner face which increases in size toward the center, whereby the flow of air will be evenly discharged over the pane of glass of the sash in order to keep the same cool, whereby frost will be prevented from forming upon the same. The couplings J are provided with eyes which are engaged by pivoted hooks L carried by the frame, whereby the pipe can be easily and quickly connected or disconnected. By constructing a device in this manner, the pipe can be removed and the caps closed over the ends of the funnels, in order to prevent the air from entering the cab.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4, I provide an air distributing device which comprises a central tube M having a frame substantially rectangular in form connected thereto formed of 'pipe, said frame and central pipe being provided with perforations in order to distribute air over the inner face of the pane of glass. This device is also provided with coupling members which can be readily slipped over the ends'of the pipes in order to connect the same.
From a foregoing description, it will be seen that I have provided a device for preventing the frost from forming on the inner face of a window pane which is so constructed that it can be easily and quickly attached or detached. It will also be seen that the supply of air can be regulated through the distributing tube by opening or closing the caps.
What I claim is A frost preventing device comprising upper and lower air collecting pipes, and a vertically arranged pipe communicating respectively With said collecting pipes, said vertical pipe being perforated upon one side, the
perforations gradually increasing in size M from the ends to the middle portion of said vertical pipe, thereby equalizing discharge of air from said pipe throughout its length.
