COVER-SECURING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 25, 1912.
Patented Mar. 25, 1913.
Serial No. 686,188.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARUTUNE MOROOK- IAN, a subject of the Sultan of Turkey, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cover-Securing Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertairis to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a cover securing device, and with respect to its more specific features, to a device for holding carpets in place.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a practical and eflicient device which will permit a cover to be rapidly attached or detached.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simple device of the kind described which shall provide a sightly appearance and whose efficiency shall be unimpaired by constant use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the kind described which may be easily and cheaply manufactured and which may be so disposed with respect to the cover that it'presents no obstruction to articles, which may be moved upon the cover.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the kind described which shall insure a smooth, unbroken cover surface.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the kind described, whereby the cover may be drawn tight and properly positioned in the process of attachment.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the following claim.
In the drawing, wherein is shown one of the various possible embodiments of the invention,Figure 1 represents a diagrammatic side elevation of the invention applied to a stair covering; Fig. 2 represents a plan view showing the invention applied to a stair carpet; Fig. 3 represents an enlarged detail cross-sectional view taken on the line waz of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 represents a detail View of the strip member.
Similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the various views of the drawing.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, 1 represents a flight of steps comprising the usual tread 2 and the riser 3. A carpet or other suitable covering material 1 covers the step surface and is adapted to be held in place thereon by means of a device adapted to secure said cover and said surface together directly and substantially prevent any movement or slipping of the carpet when in use. This cover securing device is disposed below the cover and comprises a fiat retaining strip 5, preferably of brass, which is provided with a longitudinal series of apertures 6 arranged adjacent the longitudinal edge 7 of the member. These apertures are adapted to receive a thread or other fastening means 8 which passes therethrough and through the carpet, preferably on the under side thereof, to thereby bind the strip and carpet together. On the opposite longitudinal edge 9 are provided two jaws 1O andll which are situated, (respectively, near the extremities of the strip. The strip 5, as shown in this embodiment, extends transversely of the carpet preferably for the entire breadth thereof and thus acts as a transverse brace from edge to edge of the carpet. The apertures 6 extend along the length of the thin strip 5 fro-m end to end, thus providing means at either end for attachment of the carpet adjacent its edges and intermediate points for securing the material between the edges. It will be observed that the strip is adapted to prevent crumpling of the carpet in lines substantially parallel with the brace.
As shown in Fig. 1, the strip 5 is preferably placed at or near the junction of the rear edge of the tread and its succeeding riser. Situated near the rear edge of each tread are two bolts 12 and 13 having screwthreaded shanks, which are screwed into each tread in such position that they will correspond with the position of the jaws 10 and 11 and may lie therein. The jaws 10 and 11 are adapted to receive the bolts 12 and 13, respectively. Each of these bolts 12 and 13 is provided with a laterally projecting elongated head 14: serving as a guard or keeper therefor. It is arranged that when the screw threaded bolts are rotated from a point of disengagement through about a half-turn or less, that the elongated heads 1 will thereupon be brought into contact with and press against the fiat surface of the strip 5 and will thereby securely hold the strip in position. It will be noted that by rotating the bolts 12 and 13, the head 14 of each may be brought alternatively into engaging or dis engaging position so that the strip may be withdrawn from these bolts, it being thus the work of only a momentto attach or detach the cover from the floor or other surface. It is to be understood that the cover securing device may be considered as a single member having directly cooperating portions associated respectively with the cover and the surface.
In use, the strip 5 is first sewed to the carpet, the thread passing through the apertures 6, the strips being so spaced that when the carpet is drawn into position the strips will lie in proper position, in this embodiment at the junction of the tread and riser. The bolts 12 and 13 being attached to the tread, the jaws of the strip are brought into engagement with the shanks thereof and the head 14 being rotated presses against the flat surface of the strip and secures the cover and floor directly together. By rotating the bolts, the strip and hence the cover may be alternatively attached to or detached from the steps or other surface.
By means of the construction outlined, it will be seen that a device is provided which will securely hold and strongly resist any movement of the carpet.
According to the presentembodiment, no part of the securing device will be visible, since the parts lie below and are concealed by the cover. It is to be noted that the strip 5 forms a convenient means for positioning the expanse of the carpet on the steps; that is, by grasping the strip in laying the carpet and pushing it toward the junction of the riser and tread the carpet will be drawn tight and will be properly positioned when the strip has been seated in place.
Although the device has been shown as applied to a stair carpet, it is to be understood that it may be applied to securing various covers upon various other surfaces.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a simple and practical device which efliciently fulfils, among others, the objects enumerated.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense. It is also to be understood that the language used in the following claim is intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described and all statements of the scope of the invention, which, as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetween.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In combination, a securing device comprising a retaining strip member having one longitudinal edge secured transversely to a carpet along its length upon the under side thereof and the other edge of said member free, the free edge of said retaining member having a plurality of recesses therein, and a plurality of rotatable bolt members secured to the stairs underneath the carpet and adapted to fit said recesses and to co-act with the free edge of said retaining member to hold the carpet in fixed position on the stairs.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
