ADJUSTAlBLE POOL-TABLE LEG.
Specification of Letters latent Patented Mar. 25, 1913. Application filed June 15,1912. Serial 1101703376. T r
To all whom z't may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES S. F mNEY, a
citizen of the United States, residing'at St.
.ber 22 which has an end adapted to engage against the squaredportion of the serewso e that when thus engaged this locking member the screw within the :nut. Slidably mounted on. the leg of the Paul, in the countyof Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Pool- Table Legs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing. V
This invention relates to pool tables and has special reference to an adjustment for the legs of such tables whereby the table'may be lifted up. v
The principal objectof the invention is to improve and simpli the general construction of devices of this character.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character with locking means whereby the device may be securely held in adjusted position.
With the above and other objects in view,
this invention consists in general of certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accom In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views and Figure 1 is a vertical section taken through a pool table leg constructed in accordance witlithis invention.
,Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view thereof, with the base plate removed in order to disclose the other parts. Fig. 3 is a view showing a modified form of the device. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4 4, Fig. 3, showing the use of a certain tool in connection with the device.
In carrying, out this inventionthe table leg 10 is' provided with a frusto-conical opening '11 extending upward from thebottom and terminating in an upper reduced portion 12. Held in this socket thus formed is a nut provided witha frusto-conical body 13 and an outwardly extending flange 14. This nut is secured in position by means of suitable screws 15. Omthe' lower side-of the flange 14: there is provided a guide 16.
Upon the floor of the room wherein the table is placed there is positioned a base plate 17 having a segmento-spherical recess 18 centrally disposed on its upper side. Ex tending into the nut 13 is a screw '19 having, in the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a squared wrench receiving portion 20. This screw is also provided with a lower end 21 of such constituted a species of ball and socket joint.
Mounted on the guide 16 is a locking mempreventswrotation o tableiis a sleeve 23-and this sleeve is so arvrangedand the member 22 is of such length that-when the sleeve'is down it will engage against the. member 22 and prevent rotation thereof .to release the nut. 1"
In the form shown in Figs. 3 and 4-the squared portion of the screw is replaced by a pin receiving opening 24, small flattened parts 25 being formed for engagement by the locking member 22.
In using the device all of the table legs are:
equipped in like manner' and .iwhenit is desired to adjust any leg the sleeve 23 on' that leg is raised up and the. stop member 22 drawn backward thus leaving the screw free to rotate. In the form shown in Figs"? 1 and 2 there is employed the ordinary wrench, either adjustable or of proper size to fit; the
squared portion is inserted beneath the leg and-the screw rotated'until the leg is properly adjusted. In the form shown in Figs. 3 and 4 it is preferred that a pin 25 be provided].
which has on one side a guidearm 26 slightly longer than the pin. The pin is held with the guide arm at oneside and slipped beneath the table leg after raising the sleeve 23'. The guide arm enables the-user to find the opening for the pin without .difliculty as the latter rests against the-side of the round portion. When the leg is properly adjusted the-sto member 22 is pushed back and the sleeve 2 dropped.
There has thus beenprovided a simple and"- eflicient device of the kind described, and
forthe purpose specified.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as ,new, is:'-
'1. In adevic'e of the kind described, the
c ombination with a table leg provided-with a socket in its b0ttom, a nut held in said socket, a guide on said nut, a base plate having a segmento-spherlcal ,recess 1n its upper surface, a screw held insaid nut and provided with a s egmento-spherical lower endto rest in said recess, flattened portim formed on said screw, a stop member able ins'aid guide and adapted to bear a ainstoneof the flattenedportions, and a combination with a table leg having a frusto-conical recess in its lower end, of a nut having a frusto-conical body held in said recess and a flange surrounding said recess, a guide formed on' the lower face of saidnut, a floor plate provided with a cen-,
trally disposed segmento-spherical recess in its upper surface, a screw held in said nut and projecting downward therefrom, the lower end of said screw being segmentospherical in form and adapted to rest in said I recess,,said screw further having a flattened portion adjacent its lower end, a sleeve slidable on said leg, and a stop member slidable in said guide and adapted to have one end bear against one of the flattened portions of the screw and its outer end bearing against the inside of the sleeve simultaneously.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
