To all 'tc/wm t may concern Be it lrnown that we, FRANK Bnooits and lsAAo K. Hisnr, citizens `of the United States, residing at Carlton, in the county of Yamhill and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Washers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to vthe accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to Washing devices and has special reference to a device for washing bottles.
The 'principal object of the invention is to provide an improved form of device of this character arranged to wash a number of bottles at the same time.
-Anotheir object of the invention is to provide an improved form of washer supplied with hot andcold water so arranged 'that the water may be gradually changed from cold to hot and back again while the device is being operated.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in general of certain novel `constructions, combinations and arrangements of fully described illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically claimed.
' In the accon'ipanying drawings, like characters of reference indicatelike parts in the severalv-iews, and Figure 1 is a side-elevan tion partly broken away of a device constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical median section through the device. Fig. 4 is a detail view showing the valve controlling device.
vThe invention in its present embodiment comprises a stand 10 which supports a drip pan 11 above which is carried a bottle box 12 provided with a series of compartments by means of partitions 13, which compare ments are of proper size to receive-a bottle. Each of the compartments is provided with a bottom 14 having a centrally disposed opening 15 therein.
Extending transversely across the base or support 10 are a series of shafts 16 which are geared together by means. of gears 17. Each of the .shafts 16 carries, beneath the drip pan, a series of beveled gears on the center shaft preferably facing in the opposite direction to the gears on the outside shaft for the purpose of making the device more compact. l thereto are a series of pipes 19 and the intersections of the pipes and shafts lie immediately beneath the centers of the openings 15. One end of each of the pipes 19 is plugged as at 2O while the other ends of these pipes are connected to a header 21 from the center of which extends a pipe 22. LIn the pipe 22 is a valve 23. The pipe 22 is connected to a cold water supply pipe 24 and a hot water supply pipe 25. These pipes are each separately provided with a valve 26 the handles whereof are connected by means of a bar 27.
Extending across the front of the machine is a shaft 28 whereon is a gear 29 provided ,with a crank handle 30, the gear meshing with one of the gears 17. This shaft 28 is threaded as at 3l and .on this threaded portion is a nut 32 carrying an arm 33 which is slotted as at 34 adjacent its outer end. This slot 34 engages a pin 35 011 the bar 27 so that as the shaft 28 is rotated the nut 32 will travel in one direction or the other.
.ln Fig. 4s the parts are shown with the handles or valve operating arms in the position assumed when the cold water valve in the pipe 24 is closed and the valve Q6 of the pipe open. ln the dotted lined position the arms are shown in the position assumed when closed. lt will be obvious that as the hand wheel is rotated to the ,right in Fig. 2 thc cold water valve will slowly close while the hot water valve will slowly open until full movement is accomplished when the reverse movement will again t-urn on the cold water. rl`he object of this gradual change is to avoid cracking the bottles.
Extending upward through each of the openings 15 is a pipe 3G which has its lower end connected to one of the pipes 19. Surrounding each of these pipes is a hollow shaft. 37 on the lower end whereof is a beveled gear 3S which meshes with a respective gear 18. On the upper end of this hollow shaft is a` tube 39 carrying a cylindrical, or substantially cylindrical, brush 4.0.
From the drip pan a waste tube 41 extends to any convenient place for the disposal of vthe soiled water. In Fig. 3 the device has been shown with bottles in position so that the operation thereof may be more clearly understood.
In using the device the bottles are placed on the brushes, month downward, with their necks resting in the openings 15. The bottles may be then readily removed and are thoroughly cleansed. By thus gradually changing the hot water to c'old and reversing the operation boiling water can be used without danger of cracking-the bottles or without the operator burning his fingers endeavoring to remove them from the ease. It will be obvio-us that if desired the. valves may all be controlled by hand simply by leaving the arm 33 off of the pin 35 and removing the bar 27.-
There has thus been rovided a simple and efficient device of t e kind described and for the purpose specified.
` Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. In a bottle washing machine, a series of vertically arranged water supply pipes, a
series of hollow shafts carried on said pipes, 35
brushes carried by said shafts, other shafts extending transversely of the lirst mentioned shafts, beveled gears connecting the hollow shaft and the last mentioned shaft, gearing connecting the last-mentioned shafts with each other, means to actuate said gearing, valve controlled hot and cold Water feed pipes connected to the first mentioned pipes, a drive shaft operated by said gearing actuating means, and means on said drive shaft for opening and closing said valves.
2. In a bottle washing machine', a series of bearings. a series of revoluble brushes, water supply pipes extending through the centers of said brushes and journaled in said bearings, a drive shaft, an operative connection between said brushes and lthe drive shaft to rotate all of said brushes simultaneously, hot and cold water feed pipes connected to said water supply pipes, valves in the feed pipes, and an operative connection between the drive shaft, and said valves arranged to open one of said valves and close the other simultaneously.
