To all whom, it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS H. BARKER, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of Boston, in the county of Sufi'olk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Card Games, of which the following is a specification.

1y invention relates to improvements in card games, in which certain novel improvements are combined to produce an interesting, instructive and entertaining game.

One of the objects of the invention is to provide a game apparatus for playing an positions of the batter or other principal player as the game pro resses.

In the drawings 1 represents a certain card of agroup provided with a primary designation 2, common to-all the cards of the same group, which designates a play in the game of baseball or other athletic game to be played, made by the batter or other principal player. Adjacent to the primary designation 2 is an indicator 3, which indicates the batter or other principal player and which also indicates the primary desigdivided into a plurality of groups of one or more cards, preferably varying in number, each of which cards in a given group bears a primary designation of a play made by the batter or other principal player, and it is provided also with a secondary desig nation of a play made by a player or players in the athletic game on the. opposing side to the batter or other principal player.

Another object is to provide each card with a primary designation of a certain play in the athletic game common to all the cards in the same group, which in play is tobe qualified by a secondary designation borne by another card.

Another object is to provide each card with an indicator which indicates the batter or other principal player in the athletic game being played and indicates also the primary designation on the card.

Another object is to so arrange the. primary and 'secondary' designations on the cards that there may be a possibility of the opposing player having a card with a secondary designation which will qualify the secondary which designates one of a number of different secondary designations cards of the same group, which designates a play made by a player or players in the athletic game on the opposing side to the batter or other principal player, and which qualify the play made by principal player as designated by the primary designation 2 of the card matched. Each card is provided with a portion 5 adapted to contain an illustration, advertisement or descriptive matter, which refer preferably to the play designated by the pri mary or secondary designation on the card.

til) In utilizing the cards for playing an ath- 'letic game with cards, a pack of cards is provided, which is divided-into a number of groups of cards, prefcrably varying in number, each of which cards in a group is provided with a certain primary designation 2 common to all the cards in the same group and a secondary designation 4 and an indicator 3. The cards are shuttled and cut in the usual manner, after which the cards are dealt out to each player, one card at a time, until each player has received six cards. The player at the left of the dealer starts the game by placing face up acard with some primary designation 2, with which 1t is proper to begin the play. The dealer or other opposing playerthen plays a card having some secondary designation 4, which he deems advantageous to play, which he places beside the first card with its position reversed, as shown in Figs. land 2, so that the secondary designation 4: is alined with and matches the primary designation 2 of the other card. The object of the first player is to play a card having a primary designation 2 indicating a play in the game which will advance the player, designated by the indicator 3, toward scoring a point in the game, while the object of the dealer or opposing player-is to play a card to match the primary designation 2 of the first card, having a secondary designation t which will qualify the play designated by the primary designation 2 of the first card. The cards are thus played in alternation, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, following the various plays as far as possible in the athletic game being played, until either a card is played having a primary designation 2 of a play which would permit the batter or principal player designated by the indicator 3 in the first card played, to score as shown in Fig. 5, when the hand is completed and the first player wins the hand and two points, or the cards are played for example as shown in Figs. 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11, when the first player loses and fails to win a point.

If so desired, provision may be made for either player to draw from the pack a sumcient number of cards to complete a hand of six cards, in case either player, after several cards have been played, has no card with a proper primar or secondary designation to match the car played last.

At the conclusion of each hand the cards are again shuttled and dealt by the next player on the opposing side to the dealer and the game proceeds until some player or group of players have won a certain number of points, which number may be varied according to the athletic game being played.

Various rules may be adopted to vary the methbd of playing the cards without making any change in the cards, which constitute the apparatus for playing the game.

It so desired, the cards may be'provided with the primary and secondary designations in positions on the cards different from those shown in the drawings, such for example as one designation on one side of the card and the other designation on the other side, while numerical or other indicators may be substituted for the indicators described herein.

I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A game apparatus for playing baseball with cards comprising a pack of cards divided into a plurality of groups, each card in a group bearing a primary designation common to all the cards in the group and designating a play made by the batter or other principal player, and bearing also a secondary designation of a play made by a player in the game on the opposing side to the batter or other principal player, the said secondary designation being adapted to gualify the play designated by the primary esignation on the companion card in play.

A game apparatus for playing baseball with cards comprising a pack of cards divided into a plurality of groups, each card in a group bearing a primary designation common to all the cards in the group and designating a play made by the batter or other principal player, bearing also a secondary designation of a play made by a player in the game on the opposing side to the batter or other principal player and hav ing an indicator, the word Batter, locating and indicating the playing end of each card and designating the primary designation on the card, the said secondary designation being also adapted to qualify the play designated by the primary designation on the companion card in play.
