provision of certain improvements in pipe. dredges of a simple but highly efiicient charactor for gathering the earth, mud,--gravel or sand, etc... mingled with water, at the bottom of a river or harbor, and forcing the same, under a hydraulic pressure through a giant nozzle and discharging the gathered material at a desired distancefrom the orig-- inal excavattfn without the use of pipe lines,
barges, troughs, etc, such as are commonly used for conveying the discharged c llections from the gathering point.
Another object of our invention is the pro vision of certain improvements in dredges, whereby to produce the hydraulic giant. effect of discharging the material collected by. thedredging apparatus per so, in such a manner as to effect a, great saving in time and labor, by eliminating the handling and anchoring of pontoons, such as are commonly used for supporting a pipe line discharge as well as the refitting of pipe joints in the said line;
.A further object or our invention is the provision of an improved construction of dredging ap aratus having a special design,
and cotipera tire arrangement ofparts whereby the same is capable of Working advantageously in rough water as well as in smooth water.

Ina dredge, a hull, a frame thereon projected over one end thereof, a digger and a suction pipe section mounted thereon, a discharging nozzle mounted on the other end of the hull, a rimary pumping means connected with t e suction pipe, a secondary pumping means in communication with the first pumping means and the nozzle, the said primary pumping means comprising a single stage centrifugal pump and the secondary pumping means consisting of a multistage centrifugal pump.
