To all whom t may concern Be it known that we, STANisLAw BYLICKI and JAN PAEENsKI, both subjects of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Kracow, Empire of Austria-Hungary, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Aiiixing and Printing on Labels; and. we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to devices for affixing and printing on labels postage stamps and the like.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple compact and eicient device of this kind.
The labels stamps or the like form a continuous strip which is wound into a roll or zig zag folded. By a single operation of a handle the foremost label or stamp already separated from the rest is fed forward, moistened or coated with a suitable adhesive, afiixed and provided with an impression at a predetermined point and the next label or stamp is drawn forward and separated from the rest so that the device is ready for the next operation.

Fig. 2 is a rear elevation o-f the lower part of the same partly in section. Fig. 3 shows part of Fig. 1 in a differ-ent position. Figs. 4 and 5 show details. Fig. 6 illustrates a detail on a larger scale. Fig. 7 shows a label or stamp affixed and provided with an impression. Fig. 8 .shows a plan view of some parts.
1 is the casing of the device, 2 its bottom provided with an opening 3, 4 isthe cover carrying a guide bolt 5 on which slides the hollow shank 6 of an operating handle or knob 7 A spring S in the example illustrated is inserted in the hollow guide bolt between its bottom and the operating handle and tends to force upward the said handle.
The shank 6 is connected by a link 9 to one arm 10 of a bell crank lever pivoted at 11 in the casing to the other arm 12 of which a bar 14 is pivoted, which is acted upon by a spring 15 tending to turn downward the said bar. For insuring a more regular movement of the parts there are as shown in the drawings provided two bell crank levers 10 12 one on each side of the casing the pivot pins 11 of which form a transverse shaft and the arms 10 of which are connected by a transverse rod 16 while the pivot pins 13 constitute likewise a transverse rod on which two bars 14 are pivoted. On the pivot pins or the transverse rod 13 another bar or pair of bars 17 are pivoted which are turned downward by a spring 18. An aftiXing roller 19 is journaled in the bar or bars 14 and a printing roller 20 parallel to the atlixing roller is j ournaled in the bar or bars 17.
A box 21 mounted in the casing serves to hold the continuous strip of labels stamps or the like wo-und to a roll or folded zig zag fashion and the front edge of the foremost label or stamp of the strip contained in the box 21 is held between a feed roller 22 mounted in the said box 21 and a preferably elastic guide port-ion 23 of the said boX while a label or stamp a already severed from the strip is held between the aflixing roller 19 and a pressure roller 24. The latter is journaled in a frame 25 pivoted on pins 26 on the bar or bars 14. The frame 25 further carries a moistening pad 27 and a moistening roller 28 contacting with the said pad. A spring 29 connecting the frame 25 and the bar or bars 14 tends to so turn the frame 25 that the pressure roller 24 bears against the aflixing roller 19 and the parts are so proportioned that the two rollers 24 and 2S are simultaneously in contact with the afliXing roller 19.
Vater is supplied to the moistening pad by a thin rubber hose 30 from a receptacle 31 in the casing 1 in case that the labels, stamps or the like are coated with some dry adhesive. But a suitable adhesive solution may be supplied to the moistening pad 27 for aiiixing labels, stamps or the like not provided with a` coating of dry adhesive.

For use the device is so placed on a surface A to which the label stamp or the like has to be aflixed that the opening 3 in the bottom of the casing comes over the place where the label kor the like has to be atliXed and then the handle or knob 7 is forced downward. Thereby the lever or levers 10, 12 are turned by means of the link 9 in such a manner that at first the afliXing roller 19 is drawn over the opening 3 (to the right as shown in F ig. 1) being forced downward by the spring 15 against the bottom of the casing and the surface A and thereby caused to revolve. In so doing it takes with it the label a or the like, held between it and the pressure roller 24 and also causes the moistening roller 28 to revolve, the rollers 24 and 28 being held in contact with the affixing roller by the spring 29. The revolving moistening roller 28 is moistened by the moistening pad and moistens in turn the label stamp vor vthe like a passing between it and the afliXing roller. This label stamp or the like is thus placed flat on the surface A with the moistened side downward and forced down upon such surface by the affixing roller. By .the same movement of the lever or levers 10, 12 motion is imparted to the Iprinting roller 20 by the bar or bars 17, the said roller rolling first over the inking pad 32 being inked thereby. Then the printing roller following the aflixing roller 19 rolls over the label, stamp or the like czaffixed to the surface A by the aliixing roller producing the desired impression. The handle or knob 7 is then released and the spring 8 returns the bell crank lever or levers 10, 12 together with the rollers 19, 2O into the position shown in Fig. 1. In order to prevent that in this return movement the affixing roller is inoistened which would be detrimental to the proper operation of the device an arm 33 is provided on the frame 25 and a fixed guide rail 34 is mounted in the casing. The front end (right hand end as shown on Fig. l) of another guide rail 35 yieldingly bears against the top side of the first guide rail 34 the second guide rail 35 being inclined forward and downward. If on depressing the handle 7 the aflixing roller 19 and the frame 25 run forward, the free end of the arm 33 slides along the top side of the guide rail 34 until it passes beyond the front end of the guide rail 35. The guide rail 34^is so shaped that in this forward .movement the rollers 24 and 28 are lifted off the aflixing roller 19 only after the label, stamp or the like has passed bevond the line of contact between the affixing roller 19 and the inoistening roller 28. On releasing the handle or knob 7 the arm 33 comes onto the top side of the upper guide rail 35 whereby it is held in a raised position together with the frame 25 so that the rollers 24, 28 remain raised off the roller 19 as shown in Fig. 3. Immediately before the parts arrive in their normal position the arm 33 reaches the end ofthe guide rail 35 and releases the frame 25 which is then turned down into the position shown in Fig. 1 by the spring 29, the arm 33 coming into contact with the guide rail 34. In this do-wnward movement the roller 24 strikes against the front edge of the neXt label, stamp .or the like, which in the meanwhile has been pushed forward as will be presently described whereby the said label, or the like, is rmly gripped.
If desired, a mechanism 4similar to the guide rails 34, 35 and the arm 33 may also be provided in connection with the bars 17 or 14 or both as shown in Figs. 4 and 5 at 34 35 33 and 34, 35, 33 respectively. This prevents the printing roller 20 or the aiiixing roller 19 or both when they are returned into the normal position from running over the label or the like already affixed and printed which might result in blurring the rollers or the label.
The shaft of the roller 22 for feeding the labels, stamps or the like, is driven by a spider' wheel 36 into which engages a yoke 37 pivoted on one of the lever arms 12 the said yoke is forced downward by a spring 38 and its downward movement is limited by a stop 39 on the arm 12. Further a rod 40 is pivoted to the arm 12 and carries at its other end a pin 41 engaging into an L shaped slot 42, 43 on one end of a knife 44. This knife is pivoted in the casing 1 at 45 and is arranged between the feed roller 22 and the guide 23 on the one hand and a stationary guiding channel 46 on the other hand.
The parts are so arranged that when the lever arm 12 is in its normal rear position as yshown in Fig. 1 this arm must on depressing the handle 7 move together with the yoke 37 through a certain distance before the yoke comes into actual engagement with the spider wheel or in other words that there is a certain play between the yoke and the spider wheel. Therefore at the beginning of the downward movement of the handle 7 the spider wheel 36 and the feed roller 22 will be at rest, while the knife 44 (Fig. 6) is turned in the direction of the arrow by the pin 41 on the rod 40 engaging into the part 43 of the slot; the knife thus uncovers the upper end of the guide channel 46 from which the foremost label or stamp a is withdrawn by the aflixing roller as above described. Then owing to the rotary movement of the knife the pin 41 has passed from the part 43 into the open part 42 of the slot, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 6, the pin is disengaged from the knife and the rod 40 can continue its forward movement with the lever arm 12 without affecting the knife. Then the yoke 37 comes into actual engagement with one of the arms of the spider wheel and turns the latter and through the medium of gears 47, 48 also the feed roller through an angle sufficient to draw a fresh label or stamp or the like from the box 21 into the position occupied by the label a in Fig. 1. If thus on releasing the knob 7 the lever arm 12 re turns, thel yoke 37 slides along the next following arm of the spider wheel (which is fprevented from turning backward by a pawl 49) and is depressed by the spring 38 so far that at the next forward movement of the lever arm 12 it comes into engagement with the said next following arm of the spider wheel as above described. At the same time the rod 40 returns and its pin 41 enters into the open slot 42 of the knife 44 turning the latter into the position shown in full lines in Fig. 6, whereby the label, or stamp, or the like, just drawn out from the box 21 is severed fro-m the strip and the knife covers the upper end o-f the guide channel 46. The severed label or stamp, or the like, is then in the position of the label a Fig. 1 and is ready for the next operation as are also all the parts of the device.
The size of the printing roller 20 and its position relatively to the affixing ro-ller are selected to correspond to the impression and its desired posit-ion on the label, stamp, or the like. For many purposes it is desirable that part of the impression produced by the printing roller comes on the label, stamp, or the like, and part on the surface A because in this case the removal of such label and the application of a label so removed to another surface is at once discernible. This result is obtained in the device illustrated in the drawings by so arranging the printing roller 20 relatively to the label that it rolls only with part of its length over the label while with the remainder of its length it rolls directly over surface A. Fig. 7 illustrates an impression so produced. The aflixing roller 19 might roll over the whole of the label and should on returning be raised as above described so that it does not come into contact with the impression and does not become blurred thereby.' It is preferred however, as shown in Figs. 2 and 8, to make the affixing roller 19 so short that it comes into contact with that portion of the label only over which the printing roller 2() does not roll and to provide in line with the aiiixing i roller a segment 50 coaxial with and of the same radius as the said afxing roller, such segment being prevented from revo-lving around the axis of the aflixing roller. The moistening roller 28 and the pressure roller Q4 extend over the total length of the aflixing roller and the segment which is eolual` to the length of the label or stamp. The segment 50 serves to support thelabel a, while it is being drawn out by the aflixing roller so that the label is perfectly moistened by the moistening roller. The label is then spread on the surface A by the aflixing roller as above described, and the partof the label' opposite the aflixing roller is affixed by the latter while the part of the label opposite the segment receiving an impression from the printing roller 20 is affixed bv the latter while it produces the impression.
In order that the impression produced on the label may always occupy a predetermined position on the label a pinion 51 may be secured to the printing roller such pinion engaging into a rack 52 yieldingly mounted in the casing. The printing roller then must roll positively `over the label and the surface A so that not only the impression is always produced on a predetermined place ofthe label but also the same points of the printing roller come into contact with the same points of t-he label and the surface A at the forward as well as at the return movement of the printing rollerwhereby blurring of the impression is avoided.
Part of the opening 3 in the bottom of the casing is preferably left uncovered so that the device may be placed with certainty on a predetermined part of the surface A.
The device may be advantageously used for affixing and obliterating postage stamps and registering labels on letters.
Claims:
1. In a device for aiixing and printing on labels the combination of a casing having an opening in its bottom, a box mounted in such casing and adapted to contain a continuous strip o-f labels, a bell crank lever journaled in the casing, a bar pivotally connected to such bell crank lever, a spring for depressing such bar and an afiixing roller revolubly mounted on such bar, another bar pivotally connected with the said bell crank lever, another spring for depressing the last named bar, and a printing roller revolubly mounted on the last named bar, the printing roller being parallel to the aiiixing roller, a frame pivoted on the bar carrying the aiiixing roller, a pressure roller and 'a moistening roller mounted in such frame and a spring connecting such frame with the said bar carryingthe aflixing ro-ller and adapted to hold the pressure roller and the moistening roller in contact with the affixing roller, means for supplying liquid to the surface of the moistening roller, means for feeding the labels one by one from the box, such means comprising a feed roller and the said bell crank lever, means for severing the individual labels, such means comprising a knife and the said bell crank lever, and means for rocking the said bell crank lever substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In a device for affixing and printing on labels the combination of a casing having an opening in its bottom a box mounted in such casing and adapted to contain a continuous strip of labels, a bell crank lever, journaled inthe casing, a bar pivotally connected to such bell crank lever, a spring for depressing such bar, and an' aiiixing roller revolubly mounted on such bar, another bar pivotally connected with the said bell crank lever, another spring for depressing the last named bar, anda printing roller revolubly mounted on the lastnamed bar, the print-ing roller being parallel to the aiiixing roller, a frame pivoted on the bar carrying the aflixing roller, a pressure roller and a inoistening roller mounted in such frame and a spring connecting such frame with the said bar carrying the afxing roller and adapted to hold the pressure roller and the moistening Aroller in .contact With the aflixing roller, means for holding the 1aressure roller and moisteiiing roller out of contact with the affixing roller While the latter moves in one direction, means for supplying liquid to the surface of the moistening roller, means for feeding the labels one by one from the Vbox such means comprising a feed roller vand the said bell crank lever, means for severing the individual labels, such means comprising a knife and the said bell crank lever, and means for rocking the said bell crank lever, substantially as and for .the purpose described.
8. In a device for affixing and printing on labelsthe combination of a casing, having an opening in its bottom, a box mounted in suoli casing and adapted to contain a continuous strip of labels, .a bell crank lever journaled in the casing, a bar pivotally connected to such bell crank lever, a spring for depressing such bar, andan aflixing roller revolubly mounted on such bar, another bar pivotally connected With the said bell crank lever, another-spring for depressing the last named bar, and a printing roller revolubly mounted on the last named bar, the printing roller being parallel to the aftixing roller, a frame pivoted on the bar carrying the aiiixing roller, a pressure roller, and a moistening roller mounted in such frame and a spring connecting such frame with the said bar carrying the affixing rolle-r and adapted to hold the pressure roller and the moistening roller in contact with the aiiixing roller, a guide rail stationary in the casing, another guide rail pivotally mounted in the vcasing and adapted to bear with its free end against the upper side of the stationary guide rail, a pin on the said frame ada-pted to slide along the top sides of the said guide rails, means for supplying liquid to the surface of the moistening roller, means for feeding the labels one by one from the box, such means comprising a feed roller and the said bell crank lever, means for severing the individual labels, such means comprising a knife and the said .bell crank lever, and means for rocking the saidl bell crank lever substantially as and for the purpose described.

In a device for aflixing and printing 0n labels the combination of a casing, having an opening in its bottom, a box mounted in such casing and adapted to contain a continuous strip of labels, a bell crank lever journaled in the casing, a bar pivotally connected to such bell crank lever, a spring for depressing such bar, and an ai'lixing roller guide rail stationary in the casing, another guide rail pivotally mounted in the casing and adapted to bear with its free end against the upper side of the stationary guide rail, a pin on the said bar adapted to slide along the top sides of the said guide rails, another bar pivotally connected with the said bell crank lever, another spring for depressing the last named bar, and a printing roller revolubly mounted on the last named bar, the printing roller being parallel to the aiiixing ioller, a frame pivoted on the bar carrying the ailixing roller, a pressure roller, and a moistening roller mounted in such frame and a. spring connecting such frame with the said bar carrying the aiiixing roller and adapted to hold the pressure roller and the moistening roller in contact with the aiixing roller,

In a device for aifixing and printing on labels the combination of a casing, having an opening inits bottom, a box mounted in such casing and adapted to contain a continuous strip of labels, a bell crank lever journaled in the casing, a bar pivotally connected to such bell crank lever, a spring for depressing such bar and an aiixing roller revolubly mounted on such bar, another bar pivotally connected With the said bell crank lever, another spring for depressing the last named bar, and a printing roller revolubly mounted on the last named bar, the printing roller being parallel to the aflixing roller and extending Wit-h part of its length beyond the label, a frame pivoted on the bar carrying the aflixing roller, a pressure roller, and a moistcning roller mounted in such frame and a spring connecting such frame with the said bar carrying the aflixing roller and adapted to hold the pressure roller and the moistening roller in contact with the aiiixing roller, means for supplying liquid to the surface of the moistening roller, means for feeding the labels one by one from the box, such means comprising a feed roller and the said bell crank lever, means for severing the individual labels, such means comprising a knife and the said bell crank lever and means for rocking the said bell crank lever, substantially as and for the purpose described.
