Patent-.ed Manifs., ifii. serial ne. eene-n. f
To all ywhom t may concern l Be it known that We. vYVILLMM D. lvns, a citizen ot' the United States, and a resident of Jersey (ituv, in the county ot' l-'ludson and Sta-te of New Jersey, and Josnrn Noun, acitiZen of the' United States, and -a ret-:ident of the city of New York, borough of' the Bronx, in the countv and State of New York, haveinvented anew and Improved -Elue-Section, ot' which the following is a description. Among the principal' ob'jects for which the present invention is ldesigned are: to provide a section of the character mentioned, having heating pockets tor the admission of air to the fire-pot of a furnace;e to provi-de a section ot' the character designated, oon structed and arranged in knock-down forni,- fadapted to loe varied in size to suit the exigencies of installation; to provide means .adjustable in 'conjunction with aj-lue daniper, tor varying the proportion of fresh air admitted and to provide airducts the length of which may be'varied to suit the eXigencies of the installation. v
Reference is to be had to the'vaecoinpanying drawings forni-ing' a part.. of this specisiinilar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in Which-' Figure l is a side View of a due sectionV constructed .and arranged in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal horizontal section taken onthe line 2-2 in Fig. i; and Fig. 3 is a vertical cross section taken on the line Sf in.y Figi.
Heretotore fresh air has Abeen 'introduced for consumption in the {ire-pot of a furnace, vvhere the air ,has been preheated by the heat.
4of the smoke tine and where the air has been conducted to the'iire-pot at the lowest level` of said flue. In one form of the previouslyused devices, the smoke .tlue damper has been made hollow, having receiving ps sages openingto the outside atmosphere through -trunnions forming bearings for lthe said damper and having Vdelivery openings at the loiver edge ot'said dainper for the introduction' of air to the tlue at the lowest level therein. The relatively cool air thus introduced into the Hue, it is claii'ned, passes into the fire-pot ot' the '-fiunace, forming within the lue' a substratuni-o oxygen-containing or fresh air. In a second forni, the air sol introduced is confined to {1a-*delivery pipedisposed at the lower. side of the smoke-due* )ace'nt the tire-pot the delivery of on the flue D.
given prevails, and it becomes. gine the" shields lola lea-don the Y v V are adjusted and 'clamped rigidly in position, the operation is casing to the tire-pot titles, contracted, to torni long, narrow ducts 1t), as shown best in Fig, i2 of drawings. The ducts 1G are preferably extended to ad- A of the furnace B. The ducts 10 are each provided at the 'lower corner nearest the furnace B, withperforations il provided in an inner plate 12,-.
.The circleot the smoke-flue'iseonipleted by the filling plates 13, the edges whereof are 1 introduced' between the 'edges of the lplates and the flanges 14; of the boxes 9J In this position, the platesl are secured by .screws 15 or other suitable -fasteningy devices..
Itivill be understood that' the rotundity of the flue section forming the subject ot' the present invention regulated to suit the size of the collar C of the furnace B and the smoke-flue D. Byvarying the width of the illing plates 13 by alteration or sub- St-itution, as the case may be, the adjustment, necessary for the installation'of the present section'iuaja he electcd on the job, avoiding thereby loss of tinie 'and inconvenience incident to the need for the mechanic returning to the shop for tittings or sections adapted to the -size oit the'partsvof the furnace linstalled.
y The openings 8 are disposed at the upper corner or the box 9'. To close the openings 8, rotary shields 1G are provided. The shields lGfare adj ustably mounted on a shatt- 17,'being held rigidlyA oi afdai'nper handle 19. T he shields i6 are adjustedon the shaft l? .in positions relating to the positions of adaniper valve 21.
upon Which the iinprovedsecti-on is being thereon by a hub i8 The draftfaeilities of furnaces vary, and
should var "yT with the intensity ot the d ratt There the d aft on the tine D is deficient or sl ight, it is desirable that a smaller proportion ot' air should beintro-l damper valve 21 is'in more than in installations Where tlue D is intense. lUnder stances, the reverse., of
valve 21'. When the shields air through the-ducts l() los as follows: By turning the shaft 17 With'the handle 19, the valve Z1 is disposed Ito re- B has gathered full headway and the draft strict the draft of the flue D and to retardthe passage of the heated gases and smoke from the furnace B. Under ordinary or usual conditions, the position of the valve-21 )ust in 'the-flue Dis atits strongest. The f rlesh air fromtlie outside, being thus admitted through the openings, is passedbetvveen the walls ofl thejboxes 9 to the perforations l1 at the'lovverf corners .of saidboxes adjacent the furnace B. In passing lengthwise of said boxes, .the airadmitted through the openings-8 -isheated bythe inner Walls of vthe'boxes or 'plates12. Though heated, this air is relative ly f cooler than'tlie hotand upper stratal of .hot escaping sogases. .It Will be observed that thel air thus' burning-gases escaping from the' ire-potA of theafurnace Thev air thus introduced.r
'hav/ing a heavier specific .gravity than the heated gases,..;seeks the lower section of the ue, and 'is drawn-into the fire-pot' thereofl ina direction-'opposite that pursued by the fumes and introduced into the' fire-p0tof thev'furnace, 'by the timeitvis'finallyv delivered into the! "fire-pot,'-is heated toa degree which avoidsv the cooling or dampeningmf the fire in the 'fire-pot.' `By thusintroducing into the re. poty of thefurnace fresh or oxygen-.containing'-air, preheated by the escaping smoke or gases, the heat units of the gasesare conserved and uti-lizedforradiat-ion v vithirrthe body ofthe furnace,or'vvi thin the heating dry-uinfthereof.l 'I`herpractical result of the conservation thus obtained is that the draft on theflue D isdiminished until only suicient is retained to maintain the combustion. fwithin thefire-pot ofthe furnace. l Thus,
the gases ofthe coal or other combustible being-more completely. .consumed Within the hustible' is. relatively diminished. I Hav-ing'thus' described our invention, we
fflclaim as new fan'dd lire to secureby LetftersPa-tenti.i L1A'iuesectioncomprising a` plurality of elongated .box sections, having openings yati botheiids, said openings f being disposed at'l'oppositeffsides 'of said boxes :to form air intake and outlet passages said outlet passages leading to the interior of said flue section.; va plurality of filling plates disposed between said box sections; fastening devices' for removably securing the said plates and said boxes, said box sections and filling plates beingshaped to forni when 'combined a tubularfflue section and a valve rotatably mounted in said fiile section to control the flow therethrough.
2. A flue section comprising a plurality of elongated box sections, lhaving openings at both ends,`said openings being disposed at opposite sides of said boxes to form air intake and outlet passages said outlet passages leading to the interior. of said flue secltion; a plurality of filling plates disposed between said box sections; fastening devices for removably securing the said plates'and said boxes, said boxsections and filling plates being shaped toform .when combined 4a tubular flue. section; a valve rotatably mounted vin said flue section to control the flow therethrough; anda shield manually operated to liinit the intake opening in said box sections.
