IMPROVEMENT IN LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 105,644, dated Ju15r 26, 17f).
To a/ZZ whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, DAVID GHALLINOE, of the borough of Birmingham, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamps; and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, yreference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improvement, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof', partly in section.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in each.
My invention relates to the manufacture and fitting up of lamps with detachable hanknown to the art of glass or of other suitable material. It is furnished with the collar a and burner-frame a', of any usual or known form. To convert such a lamp into a hand or wall lamp, Imake a metallic ring, c, of the form inside corresponding'to the form of the outside of the collar a, and so that, when slipped onto the collar a, the screwing in of the burner-frame a will press it Well down onto the collar and hold it firmly in place.
Rigidly connected to the ring c and cast with it or soldered on, as may be preferred, is a metallic handle, d, branching at its outer end in an upright part,d, and a downwardlybent end, d, the latter, d, being of such form as to be convenient for manipulation as a handle proper, and the former, d', answering the purpose of a standard onto which to slip a socket or eye, f. Rigidly connected to the eye f is a wire, g, which at its upper end supports a reflector, h, made in the ordinary or any known way. A spiral coil, g', in the wire g affords the means of lengthening or shortening the verticallength of the wire-support g, so as to adjust the 4reflector higher or lower, and thereby bring it to any desired position or angle relative to the flame of the lamp.
By the use of an ordinary clip, into the eye of which to insert the handle d, 'the lamp described is readily used as a wall or bracket lamp.` l
It will be observed that the socket or eye f slips onto the upright d', so Vas to be removable therefrom when the use of a reflector is not desired. The ring c with the connections thence to the reflector h are made separately, and are adapted for use with lamps as ordinarily made.
The ring o may be left sufficiently loose as to permit of being turned around on the collar a, thereby bringing the reflector hon any side of the flame, as may be desired.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The metallic ring o, having a handle, d d, and upright standard d', substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
2. In combination therewith, the socket or eye f, the latter supporting a reflector, h, by means of a wire, g, having a spiral part, g', substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I, the said DAVID CHALLINOR, have hereunto set my hand.
DAVID CHALLINOR.
