IRVING A. MOORE, OF TRENTON, NEW JERSEY.
VVASHBASIN.
Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 15, 1911.
Patented Mar. 18,1913. serial No. 660,313.
To all yZIJ/0m 'it may concern Be itknown that l, Inviato A. Moons, a citizen of the United States, residing at Trenton` in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey. have invented new and useful improvements in lillashbasins, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to wash basins, and has for its primary object to provide a wash basin in which the waste plug will he concealed from view and may be readily and easily raised for the discharge of the contents of the basin, and also lowered for allowing the filling thereof, without possibility of the overflowing of the contents therefrom.
A. still further object` of the invention is the provision oitl a wash basin which is simple in construction, thoroughly sanitary, reliable and efficient. in operation, and ineX` pensive in manufacture.
TWith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement ot parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described. illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
ln the drawings: Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through the wash basin constructed in accordance with the invention, the section being taken in the plane of its overflow. Fig. is a sectional view on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, the 'wash basin comprises a bowl which is of the usual shape and constructed from suitable material having a top flange 6 which extends circumferentially about the said bowl, the flange being' formed with a downturned outer rim T which is coeXtensive with the top flange. Provided centrally in the bottom of the bowl is a discharge orilice or aperture S, in which is suitably fitted a foraminous strainer disk 9, and this orifice or aperture 8 communicates or opens into an overflow channel 10 which is carried upwardly at the rear ot the bowl to the top flange 6 thereon.
Formed in the channel 10 is a solid partition 11 which extends upwardly therein aud terminates spaced from the top flange (3 for separating the discharge channel 1Q from the overflow channel 10, the discharge channel 1'9 being .in alinement with the overflow channel, and by reason of the termination of the partition spaced 'from the top flange G on the bowl, the said channels will be in communication with each other near the said top flange, whereby on the filling of the bowl to a predetermined level and such filling thereof exceeds this level, the overflow will be conveyed into the discharge channel 12 for its delivery to a waste pipe.
The waste pipe 13 intersects the discharge channel 12 and is connected both with the partition 11 and the wall of the said discharge channel by means of union rings or nuts let ordinarily used, the waste pipe 13 being cut away in one side to form an opening 15 communicating with the discharge channel 12, so that the overflow therein will be delivered into the said waste pipe, so that it may be carried oftq in the usual man ner through a sewerage system.
The waste pipe 13, at the inner end flush with the partition 11, is formed with a valve seat 15, in which is normally engaged a plug 1G, the same being formed with a depending stem 17, to which is loosely connected the eye terminal 18 at one end of a plug operating' rod 19, the same being slightly outwardly bowed and extends upwardly toward the top flange 6 of the bowl and is connected with a hand operated knob, presently described. The plug 1G is adapted to close the pipe 13 and is mounted to work eXteriorly of the body 5 so as not to protrude into the discharge aperture 8 when movi-ng to opening or closing position.
The top flange 6 in alinement with the channels 10 and 1Q is provided with a thimble 20, the same being suitably mounted in the top flange, and in which is engaged the hand operated knob, comprising a hollow cylindrical body 21, open at its outer end, while provided in its opposite closed end is a central aperture 22, through which is passed the operating rod 19, the latter being formed with a series of transverse openings :23 for adjustably receiving a pin 24, so that the rod may be adjusted with respect to the body 21, whereby the plug may be properly seated. Detachably threaded on the body 21 is a hand grip or cap Ql which permits the ready manipulation of the knob and closing of. the plug 16, as well as enabling access to the interior of the body 21, so as to adjust the pin 24 for regulating the rod 19, whereby the plug may be properly seated.
