DRAFT DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 18,1913.
Application filed November 19, 1912. Serial No. 732,261.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JAMES R. MITCHELL and GRADY MITCHELL, citizens of the United States, residing at Halsell, in the county of Clay and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft Devices, of which the following is a specilication.
The draft device which is the subject of the present invention is designed more particularly for binders and other agricultural machines liable to side draft, and its object is to provide a simple and eilicient device for attaching an evener bar to the draft tongue of the machine, said device being adjustable so that the evener bar may be shifted in either direct-ion to eliminate any side draft which may be present.
In order that the invention may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan View showing the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is an enlarged section on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 1 is a bottom plan view of the device removed from the tongue of the machine.
In the drawing, 10 denotes the draft tongue of the machine, the same being provided wit-h a brace rod 11 which extends rearward and is fastened to the frame of the machine.
The device which is the subject of the present invention comprises a plate 12 having adjacent to one of its ends, on its under side, a depending flange 13 at the ends of which latter are ears let. The flange extends obliquely across the plate, and the adjacent edge of the latter is parallel thereto. The plate is adapted to be placed crosswise on the top or the bottom of the tongue 10, with the flange 13 engaging the brace rod 11, said flange having the same angle as the brace rod. The ears 14 have perforations for U-bolts 15 which pass around the brace rod and serve to secure the flange 13 thereto, thereby providing a. fastening for one end of the plate 12. If the brace is a channel bar, ordinary bolts may be used in lieu of the U-bolts. That portion of the plate 12 which engages the tongue 10 is fastened thereto by a bolt 16 passing through the tongue and a slot 17 in the plate. These fastening means rigidly secure the plate in place, and the slot 17 permits adjustment forward or rearward. That portion of the plate which has the slot 17 is thickened, as indicated at 18. If the flange 13 be moved along the rod 11, the plate 12 is shifted laterally on the tongue 10 by reason of the obliquity of the rod, hence the necessity of the slot 17. Of course, a new bolt hole will have to be made in the tongue corresponding to the new position of the device thereon.
The plate 12 contains threerows of apertures 19, located respectively, adjacent to its front and rear edges, and midway therebetween, said rows extending crosswise of the plate. The edge apertures are for the purpose of securing a hammer-strap 20 to which the evener bar 21 is attached. The hammer-strap is bolted to the plate, the bolts 22 passing through the edge apertures 19. The intermediate apertures are for the pivot bolt 23 of the evener bar, which bolt also passes through an aperture in the hammer-strap.
The hammer-strap extends in the direction of the length of the tongue 10, and as the rows of apertures in the plate 12 are arranged transversely of the tongue, it will be seen that the position of the hammerstrap can be readily varied, it being adjustable laterally of the tongue in either direction. Thus, if the machine tends to run to the right, all that is necessary to do to overcome the side draft is to shift the hammerstrap to the right until the machine runs straight. If the side draft is toward the left, the hammer-strap will be shifted to the left. mer-strap changes the position of the evener bar so that the side draft is eliminated.
The device can be readily applied to the binder or other machine, and by its use all side draft can be eliminated. No modification or changes in the structure of the tongue or other parts of the ordinary draft devices of the machine are necessary. The design of the hammer-strap may be varied to suit the particular kind of evener bar or wheel employed, and for use left hand as well as right hand.
We claim:
1. The combination with a draft tongue, of a plate carried thereby, a hammer-strap adjustably fastened to the plate, said plate having front, rear and intermediate transverse rows of apertures, the front and rear rows being for the fastening means of the hammer-strap to permit adjustment thereof This shifting about of the hamtransversely of the tongue and an evener har connected to the han'nnel strap, the internietliate row of apertures being for the fastening means of said evener bar.
The combination with a draft-tongue antla diagonal brace thereton of a plate en- ;ageahle with the tongue and having a slot, a fastener passing through the slot and into the tongue, an oblique flange on the plate adjacentto one entl thereof and having ears at, its ends said flange ancl its ears engaging the brace, fastening means engaging the ears and brace, a hannnenstrap acljustahly fastened to the plate, said plate having aper tnres to receive the fastening means of the I han'nnenstrap, and saicl apertures being arranged in rows extending transversely of the tongue to permit a corresponding acljnstinent 01" the hammer-strap, and an evener bar connected to the hammer-strap.
In testimony whereof We aflix our signatures in presence of two Witnesses.
