b1 MMQWMA GREGORY ET/ZELIANTZEFF, OF ST. PETERSBURG, RUSSIA.
TYPE-WRITING IMAGE-ZINE.
1/ To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, GREGORY Ennnmnrznrr, a subject of the Emperor of Russia, and a resident of St. Petersburg, Russia, peasant, have invented a new and useful Type-lVrit-ing Machine, of which the fol- As it is necessary, that in turning the holder the plate containing the type should not shift and thus interfere with the proper working of the machine, a special mechanism is provided in the proposed machine, to hold the plates in place when the holder .is being raised or turned, which frees the working printing plate when the holder is lowered, this 'platebeing coupled with the driving pin of the machine.
The construction of the proposed device for changing the type is shown in the anneXed drawing, Figure 1 representing a side View; Fig. 2 is a plan of this device; Figs. 3 and l are separate views, partly in section, of two planes of the holder with the mechanism keeping the plates coupled with the holder on raising the latter; Fig. 5 is a plan of Fig. 3; and Figs. 6, T and 8 are details of the construction.
The holder 1 is provided, as usual, with ordinary slots 2 with openings 3 for inserting the two plates 4, containing different type,-Eussian and Latin, for instance-the eye 5 of the plate entering which, on. the insertin of theholder into the machine, is engage by the driving pin 6 (Figs. 1 and 2) of the machine, for the purpose of moving the plate during the -r e- The hub f of the holder 1 is provided with a threaded extension 8, on which a washer 9 and a spiral spring 10 are placed and a nut 11 is screwed. Extensions 12 or". the hooks -13 oscillating on the axles 14 enter the seats formed in the hub 7 under the washer 9. In this way, the spring 10 constantly holds the nit ends 15 of the hooks 13 posh-fin, as

shown in Fig. 3. Owing to this, the front ends 15, which are fork-shaped, engage the eyes 5 of the plates 4 from below, keeping these latter in a stationary position.
The axle 16 of theholder is provided with a neck 17, which is grasped by the forward ends of the drawn together by the spiral spring 19, so that for inserting the axle 16 it is necessary to press together the rear ends of the pincers, and after inserting the axle to release the rear ends. The pincers are mounted on the stem 21 and fastened to same with screws 20. The stem 21 passes freely through the openings in the lower and upper'cross-pieces. 22 and 22 of the machine frame and is provided with a spiral spring 23, abutting, at one end, on the pincers 18 and at the other end on the upper cross-piece 22 of the machine frame.
' A frame or stand 25 is fastened, by means of a screw 24, to the upper cross-piece and also a bent lever 26 is screwed on the upper cross piece by means of a screw 27. The upper end or" the lever 26 is provided with a roller 28, which may enter between the lugs or one of the hooks 13 in the lowered position of the holder (Fig. 2) and thus disengages this hook from the eye 15, freeing the plate containing the type and thereby allowing the driving pin 6 to move the plate when typing. The stem 30, fastened to the cross-piece 22, serves to limit the lowering of'the holder (under the influence of the spring 23) by abutting the cross-piece 31 of the holder. The projection 32 limits the lowering of the holder.
The action of the proposed device is follows: In order to change the type it is necessary to raise the holder 1 either by hand by the aid of the nut 11 or to press with the finger on the key raising the lever 29, the end of which enters the seat rovided in the lower end or" the stem 16. wing to this, the holder and all the parts, connected to it, will take up the position, shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. At that time the driving pin (3 will come out of the eye 5, and the end oi the lever 26 with the roller 28 will come out of the hook 13, owing to which fact the latter, on becoming free, will, under the influence of spring 10, grasp the eye 15 of the plate from below and thereby fasten the latter in a stationary position. After this, holding the nut 11 with the hand.
pincers 18 constantly the holder is half a revolution, it
l being supported the Whole time by the stand 25, on which the cross-piece 31 of he holder resls. In this Way the 'tjpe plate cannot shift from its place during the turning of the holder and therefore the Wor: of the rypewriting machine will not. be interrupted, il hen the holder turns half a revoh'e ition, the cross-piece will not be supported any longer by the stand 25, so that under the influence of the spring 23 the holder will descend and take up the position shown in solid lines in Fig. 1. At the same time the 'roller 28 willencei into the hook 13 and disengage it from the type plate, into the eye of which the driving pin will enter.
ll hat I claim is l. in a device for changing the type of typewriling machine, the combination of a vertical axle; a huh at the upper end thereof; hooks pivoted thereon and each provided With an inner extension, 8. forked end and downwardly slanting spaced lugs; a coiled spring mounted on the hub and press ing on said inner extensions and tending to raise said forked ends; levers lined to the frame of the machine; a roller on each lever and engaging between said lugs oi the respective hooks; means ior raising said huh;
messes {111d ape plates having eyes adapted to be engaged by said iorked ends.
2. In a device for the type of typewritlng machine, the combination of a vertical movable axle having; a neck therein; a vertical stein secured to the franc of the machine; pinccrs vertically movable said stem and grasping said neck; a coiled spring on said stem and pressing downwardly on said pincers; a hub at the upper end of the axle; hooks pivoted thereon and provided with an inner extension, a forked end and downwardly slanting spaced lugs; a coiled spring mounted on the hub and pressing on said inner extensions and tending lo raise said forked ends; levers fixed to the 01 the machine; a roller-on each lever and engaging between said lugs of the respective hooks; means for raising said huh; and hips plates having eyes adapted to he engaged by said forked ends.
in testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
