This invention relates to metal working machines. and more particularly to auto` matic multiple spindle machines, the present improvement particularly comprising a` rliiiie by a suitable ma azine and fed to the rotary turret by one o the drills itself and partially drilled, the companion drills suc?v icssivel y drilling the blank or coupling from ilie point where the immediately preceding Adrill stopped, and in which, after the complete dril ing of the coupling the same is automatically tapped, the tap forininglthle' ant,

In a machine of the character referred to .it is necessary, in order to use. a non-rotatable tap, that the work spindles carrying the blanks shall rotate at a relatively slow speed to permit the proper tapping oieration. This slow s eed of the work spindles. however, wouldp result in considerable loss ot' time during the drilling operation. and therefore, in order to avoid this loss of time it is essential that the machine lie so organized that notwithstanding tlie rclativel)Y slow speed of the blank or work spindles` the product of the machine will not br ieduced by reason of this fact, and it is also essential in an organization ot this character, that damage and injury to the machine will not result should the blanks not be fed )ro erly or the drills break ofi' during.,r the ril ing operation. To provide such a inachine is therefore the gist of the present iinprovement.

Carried by this turret or cylinder are a plurality of work spindles shown as four in number, rot-ated b means of gears 7, one carried by each of tie spindles and in mesh with a ar 8 carried on the spindle shaft t), whci .extends through the drill slide and to the opposite end of the machine, having fixed thereto at this pointu suitable driving pulley 10 carryin a bevel gear 11, which bevel gear is in mesii with a bevel gear 12 mounted on a shaft havinga bevel gear 13 at its opposite end and in mesh with a bevel pinion 1-'1 mounted on a shaft 15 supported transversely in the bed of the machine, and which shaft, by means of a suitable sprocket chain and change gearing (not shown) iniparts motion to a worm shaft 16, the worm 1i' of which is loosely mounted thereon for the purpose hereinafter explained, and which worm is in mesh with a worm wheel 1S fixed to the cam shaft 10.
'lhe turret or cylinder is rotated or iudexed from the cam shaft 1t) by means of a fan gear fixed to the shaft and the teeth of which gear are in mesh with teeth 21 carried by the c linder or turret, whereby the turretl is intexed at )redeterinined intervals. Each of the worlt spindles is provided with a blank receiving chuck opened and closed by suitable cam mechanism 22 carried by the cam shaft 19 in the usual manner. On the worm shaft 16, u on which the worm 17 is loosely mounte is located a pair of clutch members 22 and 23, the clutch member 22 being keyed to the shaft 1G und slitting thereon and having the usual groove 24 for the )urpose hereinafter specified, while the clutci member 23 is fastened to the loosely mounted worm 17, it having a suitable bearing in the bed of the machine. From this it follows that when the clutch members are in en agement the worm will be rotated and there y the worm wheel. to impart motion to the cam shaft but when out of engagement the worm will he idle and therefore the rotation of the cam shaft ceases. The ur ose of this organization will be ex laine hereinafter.
Mounted u )on the d of the machine is a sliding too carrier bored to receive three tool spindles 81, 82 and 88 located in line with three of the work spindles 6 when in their working iosition. In these tool spindles are secure drill holders 84. For rotating these drill holders 84, located in step formation, thatfis to say so arranged that one drill will project beyond a companion drill there is housed on the spindle .shaft t) a sli ing gear in mesh with a s ur gear 36, which is keyed toashaft 87 having a bearing in a bracket 38 secured to the sliding tool carrier. .On the opposite end of this shaft 3'( is keyed another spur gear 39 in mesh with a gear 40 keyed to drill spindle 31. A gear 41 is keyed to spindle 33 and a gear 42, carried by a stud 43, is in position to mesh with gears and 41, and a gear 44 is keyed to s )indle 32 and is in mesh with gear 3 9. This method of gearing 'drives all three drill spindles right handed from the Spindle shaftl t), which runs through and has its bearing, as hereinbefore stated, in the turretA or cylinder 3 and carries the gear 8 in mesh w1th the spur gears T earried by the work spindles` 6, thus driving the work s indles in the opposite direction from the rill spindles, so that the work spindles can be rotated at a speed to suit the ta J hereinafter referred to, while the drill spindles can be rotated at a greater lspeed to suit the drills` this being ell'ected b v changin the gears carried by the tool slide. ln ot 1er words, the work spindles must4 be rotated at a sutiiciently slow speed lo permit the tup to run easily and cut through the blank, as a steel tap cannot be run iii at. a i
high speed, there being a fixed standard at which the work spindles can be rotated to permit the proper ta )ping 01m-ations,A and therefore, as Stated, the work spindles must be run slowly in order to permit the tappingr operation t'o be effected; but in order to drill at a high speed and thus turn out the product quickly, the drills are run in the opposite direction and faster than the work spindles are run thus givingr a much greater speed than could otherwise be obtained.
On the tool slide or sliding tool carrier 30.y under the drill spindle 32, n slide 5() is gibbed in the usual way. (.)n this slide is a long bearing 51 bored in line with one of the work spindles when the cylinder is in its workin" position. This bore is hushed to Suit tlie diameter of the work blanks to be ta ipod. .-\t the rear end of this slide is pivoted a swinging bearing also bored to the size of the work blanks. These two bearings l and 52 hold the curved tap 58. This swinginlr bearing 52 is essential in order to relieve t ie strain on the tap when the completed work blanks are passing over the Shank of the ta i. "he action of this bearing can be plainly observed in Fig. 1t). In other words, when a blank is passing over the threaded portion of the tap it comes into contact wit-h a blank that has previouslit been threaded and passed over the threaded portion of the tap, so that eventually the shank of the tu i will be completely inclosed with completed or tap )ed blanks. Each blank passing over the tlireaded portion of the tap and coming into contact with a blank that has just previousl passed over the tap` has to make room for itself on the. shank ot? the tap by forcing the blanks ahead of it. the length of a blank. If the tap remained itl() in its neutral position during the tapping operation in. the bearings 51 and 5'2, which neutral position is central with the bores of such bearings. there would be no advantage in having the bearing 52 swing, but as the tap passes through the blank it causes the. curved end thereof to advance laterally the length ot the threaded portion of the tap, which would cause it to cramp in the bearing 52 so that the blank would not be allowed to freelw1 pass over 'the shank of the tap; but by having this bearing swing it automatically changes its position of alhiement with the travel of the tap, thus relieving the cramping of the'blanks when they are passing over the shank of the tap. The tap slide 50 is operated toward and from the turret by means of a lever (30 and a suitable stud 61 and roller (32 engaged by`a cam on the cam drum mounted on the cam shaft 1t) hereinbefore referred to. The end of this lever 60 is vlocated between an extension 63 on the slide 50 and a spring plunger 64 carried by the slide, so thatI when starting the tap into t-he blank the slide 50 pushes against the plunger 64 and avoids all danger of spoiling'the threads in the work blank.
Fronrthe foregoing it will be observed that although the tap slide is carried by the tool carrier or slide it also has a movement independently thereofs at the proper time to permit the tapping operation, and that by means of the swinging or .swiveled bearing 52 the tapped blanks can be properly fed from the curved shank of the tap without. any cramping thereof. the tap thus operating not only to tap the blanks, but to feed the same from the chuck of the work spindle when such chuck is opened at the proper time. by the mechanisn'i liuovided for that. purpose. thus obviating the use of any ejecting mechanism for ejecting the completed blank.
.The feeding mechanism for feeding the blanks successively to the chucks of the work spindles comprises a maga-xine Ttl carrying' the cut ott blanks. In the housing 7l, at the required distance from the front. end thereof and at right angles to the slide 73, is bored a hole 7G of thesamediameter as the work blanks, which hole will be in alinement with the hole 74 in the slide 7? when the. latter is retracted, and over this hole 76 the blank carrier or magazine 70 is belted so that the work blanks will successively drop into this hole 76 of the housing.
7l and not interfere with the working of the slide 73. For pushing the blan-ksfrom the hole oropening 7G in the housing into the hole or opening of the slide 73 a suitable plunger 77 is supported on the bed in alinement with this hole 76. To the-outer end of this plunger is fastened a lever 78 pivotally supported on the bed of the machine. and which l'ever is operated by a cam 79 on a cam drum carried by `the cam shaft, b v means of which the plunger will be operated atl the proper time-to push a blank into the slide 73, a lsuitable .spring 8() being provided on the plunger for returning the plunger or rod to its normal position.
For operating the slide 73 a slotte( bracket 81 is bolted to the bed of the machine. One end of this bracket is extended downward and carries a pivoted lever 82 on the lower end of which is fastened a short lever 83, the opposite-end of which is secured to a master lever 84, which level 84 is pivotally supported at its upper end by a` bracket 85 secured to the bed of the machine, while its lower end carries a roller 8G in posit-ion to contact witl'ra suitable cam 87 carried by a cam drum 88 on tl e cam shaft i9, see Fig. 17. ,The upper end of the lever S2 is crotched to receive'a slotted link 89, the opposite end of which link Si) is pivotall)r secured to the slide 73 atI the outer end thereof.' Honsed in the crotched end of the lever 82, see Fig. 1), are two spring phmgers 90 and 91, the inner ends of which are adapted to engage depressions 02 and 93, one on each side, in the end of the slotted linkSt), and thus form the connecting means between the lever 82 and the slotted link. The springs of these plungers are strong enough to withstand the strain of feeding' the slide 73 to its proper position. Should the slide 73 clog the plungers will be forced out of the depressions so thatv tht` lever 82 can move forward in the s'lot of the link and thus allow the plungers to lslide freely in the slot without operating the slide 73. On thereturn of the lever 82 the plungers will automatically project into the depressions in f the sides of the slotted link, thereby again ft'irluing a proper connecticn. This mechanism thus avoids the breaking,r of'the parts due to any imperfect feeding of the blanks intov the bore or opening ofthe slide 7?.
To the, bed of the machine. on the tap side thereof. is doyetailed a bracket 100, to which bracket is pivoted a lever 103, to the front end of which is fastened a plate104 directly in fro-nt of the work spindle. On the other end of this lever 103 is fastened a tapered steel inclined shoe 105. Secured to the bed of the machine are brackets 106 and 107, in which is housed a shaft 10S, on one end of which is fastened a lever 109 having a roller 110 in contact with the inclined steel shoe 105. A clutch lever 111 is fastened to the shaft 108 and engages in the groove 24 of the sliding clutch member .22 keyed to the worm shaft 16.
From the foregoing it will be observed that should a piece of wor-k not be removed from the work spindle by the tap, as for i n` stance should the tap .be prevented from passing through the blank by the breaking of the drill so that the tap cannot remove the blank from' the chuck upon the indexing of the cylinder', this imperfect work blank will come into contact with the lever 103, which will thus operate? the shaft 108 andl disconnect the clutch members 2*2 and Q3 and thus preventthe cam shaft from turning and so prevent further rotationfof the turret or cylinder, and consequently prevent breakage of the several parts, for instance thc feeding mechanism and any of the drills. In other words, on the stoppage of the -cam shaft the operation of all the mechanisms dependingr upon it are also stopped.
For supplying the proper quant-ity of oil `to each of the w'ork spindles as they are successively brought into tapping position each of the four spindles is .provided with a housed bronze bushing 115 drilled wit-h a 'suitable countersunk hole 116 to receive the tapered end of a plunger 117 carried by a suitable bearing 11S supported at. the rear end of the bed. lnto the Vbearing `11S is tapped an oil-conveying pipe 119. The plunger 117 is provided with an axial open.- ing from the .'front end thereof and with a cross-hole communica-ting therewith, which cross hole, when t-he plunger projects into the bronze. bushing,r of a work spindle, is in communication with the end of the oil-,supply pipe 119, so that oil will then be allowed to tiow from pipe 110 through the plunger 117 into the spindle. To the outer end of the plunger 117 is Afastened a. slotted lever 120 by means of a pin 121. The lower end of this lever 120 is pivoted to a bracket- 122 on the bed of the machine, and by means of a cam 123 on a'cam drum 124 and a con necting member 125 and spring 126 the pl ncylinder has been indexed, when it enters the next succeedlng spindle, the oil being shut ott automatically during the interval by reason o f the fact that the plunger is moved away from the oil-supply pipe tapped into the bearingr 118. s the blank has been completely drilled or bored when it is car! ried by the turret to the tapping position, it follows that the oil supplied at the rear end of the spindle, when the blank is in its tapping position can flow through such spin dle and the blank and s0 flush the latter and clear it of chips and pieces of metal and alsoract upon thethreaded end of the tap A as it penetrates the blank, and so maintain the same thoroughly lubricated at the point. where most needed, namely at the end of the tap within the blank.
In operation, the rod or plunger 77 having pushed a blan'k from the opening or hole in the housing 71 into the opening or hole of the slide 73, the slide 73 is caused to advance through the medium of the levers 82, 83- and Stand the cam mechanism provided for operating these levers, until the blank is inalineinent with the lower work spindle atone side of the turret. vThe tool slide is then rapidly advanced .by the usual cam mechanismprovided on the cam shaft for that purpose, whereupon the drill in the drill spindle pushes the work blank from the slide 73 into the chuck of the work spindle,
which chuck has of course been opened or released by means of the usual cam provided for thispurpose, whereupon the chuck is closed to grip the work blank. When the blank has been properly* gripped by its chuck the continued rapid advance of the tool slide. is retarded to the speed possiblev to enable the drill to drill the work blank. These two speeds are regulated by means of cams onA the cam drum on the cam shaft. In the meantime the slide 73, through the levels hereinbefore referred to,Y is withdrawn to its loading position.` The cam on the cam drum for operating the tool slide hasA a lead that-will carry t-he drill one-third way throngr the work blank. When the tool lslide h s advanced to the extreme length of tra vel the ca is .returned rapidlyv by ineans of on the cam drum to its lnltia-lposi` -tion and the cylinder is indexed in the usual way, thus bringing this same work blank which has been drilled one-third the distance thereof into' line* with spindle 31, whereupon the tool slide4 isagain advanced in the manner hereinbefore explained, while the drill xin spindle 31 starts to ,drill where 'the drill'in'spindle 33 left ott, thus-drilling into the blank by the means provided for that purpose, and when the threaded portion of the tap has passed through the vwork blank the .chuck ofthe work spindle is opened iii the usual manner, thus allowing .the work slide to. recede to its initial position, the tap reiiio'vin;r theblank from the work spindle. 'lhus the complete indexingof the spindle and the succeeding advancingr and retracting of the tool slide with its phiralitypof drills, one projecting'. beyond another, results in .one complete drilled and tapped blank at each complete indexing of the cylinder, whilethe successively tapped blanks are withdrawn from the work spindles and discharged from the free end of the curved tap shank.
