To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing, at Beatrice, in the county of Gage and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Cement Grave-Vault, of which the following is aspecification.

One object of this invention is to ro'vide a mortuary receptacle comprising a id and a case having reinforcing elements which cooperate to define a cement receiving groove about the periphery of the lid.

Another object of the invention is to provide a mortuary receptacle comprising a case and a lid, the case and the lid being provided with reinforcing elements cooperating to support the lid upon the case.

Another object of the invention is ,to provide novel means for assembling a handle with the lid of a mortuary receptacle.

A further object of the invent-ion is to provide a mortuary receptacle the case portion of which is provided with a novel form of reinforcing element which is adapted to receive the lid.

Another object of the invention is to improve generally, and toincrease the utility of, devices of that type to which the'present invention appertains.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in' the com bination and arrangement of parts and in the details "of construction hereinafterde.

In carrying out the invention there is provided a case 1. and a lid 2 adapted to be applied to the case 1'. The case land the lid 2 are preferably fashioned from concrete or other plastic material. In fashioning the case 1 and the lid 2 a mixture comprising one part of cement and two parts of cinders may be employed, although the proportions and the ingredients of the plastic mixture may be altered without jeopardizing the utility ofthe invention. The case 1 is reinforced along its sides, along its ends and in its bottom, as indicated at 3, and the lid 2 .is reinforced as indicated at 4.

The body 6 of the angle member 5 rests upon the upper edge of the case 1, the flange 8 and the'tongues 10 being embedded in the walls of'the case. The flange 7 upstands above the edge of the case 1, adja: cent the outer face of the case.

A reinforcing band 12 is applied about the periphery of the lid 2. f The band 12 comprises a vertical flange 14 which engages the periphery of the lid 2 closely, and a horizontal flange 5 which lies along the under face of the lid 2. If desired, the horizontal flange 5- of the band 12 may be counter sunk or embedded in the lower face of thelid 2.

The angle. member 5 preferably extends around the entire periphery of the case 1, and the angle member or band 12 preferably extends around the entire periphery of the lid 2. Preferably although not necessarily, the band 12 extends around the periphery of the lid 2 in a continuous length. When this construction is carried out, the horizontal flange 15 of the band 12 is notched at intervals, as indicated at '16, to permit the flange 14 to be bent, as indicated at 17, t0 define one of the corners. If desired, one end of the flange 15 may be overlappedupon the other end of the flange, ,as shown in Fig. 4,. the overlapped ends being united by securing elements 19 which may be rivets or the like.

Ties 20 preferably taking the form of rods are embedded in the lid 2. The ends of the rods 20 are received in, and preferably are riveted down upon the vertical flanges 14 of the band 12. Loop-shaped handles are inserted into the lid 2, adjacent the ends of the lid, or elsewhere, the handles fine a trough-shaped cement receiving groove about the periphery of the lid 2, to the end that the lid may be sealed in place.

Itis to be noted that although the case 1 and the lid 2 are fashioned from concrete, these parts may be soldered firmly together, the solder being inserted in the space 24:.

Owing to the fact that the flange 8 and the tongues 10 are embedded in the upper edge of the case 1, the upper edge of the case is reinforced, and at the same time, the upstanding flange 7 is so positioned as to receive the lid 2. Owing to the fact that the tongues 10 are twisted as indicated at 11, so as to stand approximately at right angles to the flange 8, the hold of the angle member 5 on the case 1 is enhanced greatly. Further, owing to the feature-last above described, the reinforcement of the upper edge of the case 1 is made more complete. The mounting of the handles 22 is unusually secure, it being noted that any strain imposed upon the handles passes into the rods 20, and from the rods 20 into the flanges 14, and thence into the flanges 15 which engage the under face of the lid 2.

If desired, the case 1 may be peripherally bound by an angle member 25, so as to prevent a nicking and breaking of the corners of the case, in shipping and moving the same about. I

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. A mortuary receptacle comprising a case; a reinforcing element comprising a body resting on the upper edge of the case, a depending flange inserted in the case and a flange upstanding adjacent the periphery ofthe case, the depending flange comprising a plurality of tongues disposed at an angle to the depending flange proper.

2. A mortuary receptacle comprising a case; a reinforcing strip comprising a body resting upon the upper edge of the case, an upstanding flange projecting above the upper edge of the case, the outer face of the flange being "substantially flush with the outer face of the case, whereby the flange will serve to protect the upper edge of the case at its periphery, and a depending flange embedded in the case; and a lid resting on the body, the upstanding flange constituting means for limiting the lateral movement of the body.
