IMPROVEMENT In mns FORTRIMMING- AND STRAIGHTENING A xLE-CLIPS.
The Schedule referred to in these `lint-tten; Patent and making part of the sme.
Beit known .tlmtL EBENEZER H. PLANT, of
yIlantsville,inajhe eountyof Hartford and State of Connecticut, hareinvented anew Improvementin i i 1 y Dies forTrimming and Straightening Axle-Clips; and
l `do hereby declare the following, when taken in coni neotion with the accompanying drawings and the letl ters of reference marked thereon, to 1be a full, clear, and exact description of the, same, and whichsaid 'drawings constitute part of tliis specification, and'repi `Figure 1, a top view Aot' the lower or trimming-die; '(Figure 2, an 4end View `of the `triunning-die'and follower;
`Figure 3, a central section on line x x, illustrating l the operation;
Figure 4, the clip as it comesfrom the forging-dies; and in l Figure 5, the same, after it com'es from the trimming-dies. .i
This invention relates to the construction of dies i. i fortrimming and straightening carriage-clips.
In forging carriage-clips they are struck from round t t rods'iattened over the central portiomand the ends i left round for thebo1 ts. In the' process of striking l up`, the vends are naturally curved downward, as in fig.
` 4, andthes'e require to bel straightened, as in fig. g5.
`The surplus metal or iin upon the'edge of the fiat portion re'qniresto be trimmed. l
H The object of my inventioufis toboth trim andv u t straighten the clip `at the same operation, and con- "siSts in combining withthe Vtrimming-.die a bed, o nto 'as it may be made a part of the block B.
*Mor-PM which, through the'trimining-die, themclip will be forced by the` follo\ver, and, pressed by the follower onto the bed, will he straightened and brought into the desired shape.
A A are the two sides or cutting-edge of' the trimy ming-die, fixed to a block, 13, and made adjustable thereon.
G is abcd arranged below the cutters A A, and shaped as seen in iig. 3,; corresponding to the under surface of the clip.
. D is the follower, constructed so as to pass down betweenthe cutters.
. The blank,`ig. 4, is placed in propel' position o'ver the cutters A A and the bed C. The follower D, brought down thereon, forces the clip through between the cutters, trimming o the surplus metal, and carryingit onto-the bed O beneath, and, pressing it down onto the bed, @'straightens the clip, as seen in fig. 5,'-and thus, by a single operation, the clip is trimmed and straightened. Ihave` representedthe bed C as anv independent piece, and this I prefer, inasmuch as it, nay beadjusted for diiferent-sized clips; but it is not essential,
I claim as my invention-,-
' In combination with tlje'trimmiug-die AA and its n follower D, 'the bed C, constructed and operating sub-y stantiallyT as described.
