Be it known that I, FELIX P. MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Humboldt, in the county of Gibson and State of Tennessee, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stamp Canceling Machines, of which the following is a specification.

This invention is an improved stamp canceling machine for use in post oflices for canceling stamps on mail matter and also affixing the post mark, the invention consisting in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.

The object of my invention is to provide improved stamp canceling devices which are adapted to be readily attached to a wall, a desk or any other suitable supporting object and which may be readily and rapidly operated either by foot or by hand so as to greatly facilitate the canceling of stamps and the printing of post marks on mail mat ter.

In the accompanying drawing :Figure 1 is a side elevation of a stamp canceling machine constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the same attached to a wall. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view on the plane indicated by the line aa of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar View on the plane indicated by the line bb of Fig. 1.

In accordance with my invention, I provide a bracket 1 which comprises a vertical plate 2 and a horizontal plate 3, which projects outwardly from the lower end of the vertical plate. The said vertical plate is provided with openings for the reception of screws 4 whereby to secure the bracket to a wall or to one side of a desk or other suitable supporting object, the vertical line of a wall being, for the purposes of this specification, indicated at A in Fig. 1. The vertical plate 2 is provided on its outer side with a pair of spaced vertical ears 4. A horizontal arm 5 projects outwardly from the horizontal plate 3 and has its inner end connected to the plate 2. At the outer end of the said horizontal arm is a suitable bed plate 6 which is adapted to receive either a suitable platen or a rubber or other suitable printing form for making a post mark or for canceling a stamp. A printing arm 7 has its inner end pivotally mounted as at 8 between the ears 4 so that the said printing arm is adapted for vertical angular movement. The printing arm is provided at its outer end with a bed plate 8 which is also adapted to hold a suitable rubber or other printing form for making a post mark or canceling a stamp and 011 the upper side of the said printing arm at its outer end is a handle or knob 9 which enables the said printing arm to be operated by hand, when desired. I also provide a standard 10 which comprises a vertical plate 11 and a horizontal plate 12 at the lower end of the vertical plate and connected thereto by means of a medially arranged brace web or rib 13. The vertical plate has openings for the reception of screws to secure the said bracket to the wall or desk and the horizontal plate also has openings for screws to secure said plate to the fioor. The vertical plate 11 is provided in its upper end with a pair of spaced cars 15 between which the treadle or foot lever 16 is pivotally mounted, the pivot 17 being spaced a suitable distance from the inner end of said lever. On the upper side of the lever at a point a suitable-distance from its inner end is a pair of cars 17 between which is pivoted the lower end of a pitman 18. This pitman has a fork 19 at its upper end. the arms of which operate in slots 20 of the plate 3 and are pivotally connected as at 21 to the printing lever 7. A spring 22 has its lower end connected to the web 13 and its upper end connected to the inner end of the lever 16, the said spring acting to normally elevate the lever and, hence,

causethe latter, through the instrumentality of the pitman, to raise the outer end of the printing lever 7.

In the operation of the machine, the letter or other mail matter to be post marked and canceled is placed on the form on the bed plate 6 and the printing arm or lever is then forced downwardly, either by grasping the knob or by depressing the lever 16 by means of the foot. It will be understood that a single stroke sufiices to cancel the stamp and post mark each piece of mail and that the operation of canceling and post marking the mail may be very rapidly performed by means of my improved canceling machine.

I claim The herein described stamp canceling machine comprising a bracket for attachment to a wall, desk or other support and provided with an arm, the said arm having a vertical web, a form carried by the said web and the said arm having openings on opposite sides of said Web, a printing lever pivotally connected to the said bracket at a point above the arm, a bed plate having a form carried by said lever, in combination With a standard also adapted to be secured to the said support, a lever pivotally mounted on the said standard, a spring to move the lever in one direction, and a pitinan con necting the lever to the form, the said pitman having a forked upper end the arms of which operate in and are guided by the openings of the firstanentioned arm and are arranged 011 opposite sides and pivotally connected to the printing lever, the said lever, the spring and the pitman coacting to normally raise the printing lever.
