GEORGE W. KOCH, F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
To all whom, it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE W. Kocn, a
citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Bottle ashing and Binsing Machines, of which the followrows of bottles are carried by an endless conveyer in order that-the rows of bottles may be presented successivelyto the bottle washing and rinsing devices, the object of my invention being to construct a simple machine. of this type which can'be constructed at small cost compared with the capacity of the machine, and in which the thorough brush washing of each bottle can be efiected and the bottles can be rinsed both before and after the brush washing, the machine requiring no skilled attendance and being therefore operated with a minimum of expense.
In the accompanying drawings-Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved bottle washing and rinsing machine, looking in the direction of the arrow 00, Fig. 4-; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the machine looking in the direction of the arrow 3 Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal vertical section of the machine; Fig. dis a vertical transverse section looking inthe direction of the arrow w, Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is an enlarged transverse section the line aa, Fig. 3 Fig. 6 is an enlarged transversesection on the line 5-6. Fig. 3; Fig. 7 is a transverse section of part of the bottle carrier illustrating a special construction of the same, and Fig. 8 is an enlarged section of part of one of the presser arms whereby the bottles are retained in posit-ion during the brush washing.
The machine has opposite side frames 11 providing bearings for transverse shafts 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. The pulley 7 for receiving the driving belt is carried by a sleeve 7 which can turnloosely on the projecting end of the shaft 2, and upon this sleeve 1s n 130 mounted a spur wheel .9 and a spur pin-- ion 10. The spur wheel 9 meshes with a spur Wheel 11 at one end of the shaft 5 and the spur pinion 10 meshes with a spur wheel 12 at one end of the shaft 3, as-
shown in Fig. 1. At the other end of said shaft 3 is a pinion 13.which meshes with an internal annular rack 14 on a disk 15,.
the latter having onits periphery a toothed Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 11, 1811.

the latter is .not in mesh with one of the segr I -ments 17 of the disk 17 whereby on each rotation of the disk 15 movement of partial rotation will be imparted to the disk 17 and the latter will be locked in position between its successive movements. The disk 17 is mounted upon the hub of a disk 19 which is keyed to the shaft 2, said disks 17 and 19 being secured together by means of bolts 20 which are adapted to slots 21 in the disk 17"- sothat a limited amount of rotary motion of the two disks in respect to one another will be permitted when the nutsupon said bolts have been loosened. (See Figs. 2 and 5).
- The shaft 2 carries sprocket wheels 22 which engage with endless chains 23, the latter having anti-friction rollers 24 which travel upon runways 25 secured to or forming part of the side frames 1 and projecting inwardly therefrom, as shown in Fig. 4. At one end of the machine each of these runways is discontinued in order to provide for the insertion of a drum 26 over which the endless upon the shaft 6, and bearings for said shaft being free to slide in guides 27 on the side frames 1 and being acted upon by adjusting screws 29, so that the drums 26 can be moved outwardly in order to impart the proper degree of tension to the endless chains 23. (See Figs. 1 to 3).
The endless chains 23 carry a series of transverse rectangular frames'BO, each having at the top a series of openings for receiving a row of bottles and each frame being provided on the bottom with a corresponding series of tapered sockets 31 torreceiving the mouths of said row of bottles, each socket having a tubular plug 32 guided radially in the base, so that the plug is free to move radially in the socket, the-plug being acted upon by a coiled spring 33 which tends-to press the plug 32 outwardly at all times butpermits the plug to yield inwardly each of said framesmay have on t-het-op at lOQ each end a stud or button 30 for engagement are as .follows: Above the bottoms of the inverted bottles and centrally disposed in respect to the two rows of brush spindles is a. shaft'68 suitably guided at each end so as to be free to rise and fall, and pivotally mounted upon this shaft are a series of pairs of arms 69 whose lowerends. are provided- 'with pads 69 (see, Fig. 8) of rubber or i by a; rod 71 to an arm 72 on the rock shaft other resilient material, these pads resting upon the bottoms of the t-wo'rows-of bottles which are in posit-ionfor the action of "the brushes 52, I a spring '70 connecting the arms 69 of each pair and tending to draw them toward each other but permitting them to swing: apart to any desired extent, depending upon the'upward pressure imparted to each arm by contact with the bottom ofthe bottle when the shaft 558; is lowered, suitable means being. provided for limiting the approach of the arms 69 toward each other,
Thepshaft 68near each end, isconnected 64: so that as said shaft is rocked in one direction by thedepression of the rod 66 by the lever .34 the ashaft 68 will des'cend'and ill press the pads 69. at the lower end of t e arms. 69 upon the upturned bottoms of the two-rows of'bottles beneath the same,
thereby pressing the. mouths of said bottles firmly into the sockets 3 wh "h carry the bottles.
'lne freedom of each arm 69 to yield .wa-i dly independ'ently of the other armscauses'properuniform bearing of the pads on ,the'arms upon each bottle irrespective of slight differences in the length .of the bottles, the lower ends of the arms bearing centrally upon .the bottom of each bottle andthus overcoming any tendency to tip or tilt the bottles out of their 'propervertical position. 1
The frictional hold of the resilientpads 69 upon the bottoms of the bottles prevents any tendency of said bottles to rotate under the influence of the rotating brushes 52.
In theoperation of the machine the attendant in charge of the soaking of 'the' {bottles applies the soaked bottles to the- 1 of the frames.
carrienz I I I II In testlmonv whereof, ill have signed my,
independently" of. the means whereby the success1ve feed movements are imparted to.
the chains and the. proper registry ofthe bottle-receiving sockets 31*in-resp'ect to the brushes can thereby be insured.
'1 The combination, in
I a bottle washing machme, of a row of brush spindles, a" reipl7ocating frame 'QarFyi-ng am jro-q tat ing shafts at opposite/sides of the machme, and gearing whereby one .of said.
shafts operates the brush spindles on. "one side of the center of the carrying frame and the other shaft operates theibrush spindleson the other side of said center.
2. The combinatiominla bottle washing machine, of an endless chain of carriers, each adapted toreceive a row of bottles, brush carrying spindles, one for each bottle of a. row, a reciprocated frame carrying said brush spindles, and'a rising. andfalling shaft having' a series of yieldingl mounted pairs of arms thereon, the arms of each pair bearing upon the bottoms of two adjoining rows of bottles when the brushes are entering the same. g v The combination, in a -bottle" washing Vmachine, of a bottle carrier having a 'ba r 'w1th openings therein for receiving a row of bottles, and a supplementary bar super posed upon said first bar and having therein a row of bottle-receiving openlngs of lesser diameter. than those of the first bar,
plementary bar upon the main'bar'of the carrier with theopen'ingsof the two bars in registry with one another. n
"l. The'combinatiomin a bottle washing machine, of an endless chain 'ofpbottle carriers, a shaft having thereon a gear-wheel for driving said chain and" another gear and means for detachably securingsaid sup- I wheel having toothedsegments' and-'locking segments alternating with one another, a reciprocatingbrush carrier, a wheel'havingexternal teeth for meshing successively with said toothed segments, and a peripheral portion for'engaging said lockingsegments, said wheel also'having an internal drive gear and an external crank -pin, and
a I connection between said c'rank pinand anarmon a rock shaft, which has another arm connected ito the reciprocating brush name to this specification, in the presence of GEORGE wQKocn,
