PENCIL-SARPENER.
Specication of Letters Patent. I Patented Ma 1'.. 11i l `Application .tiled vOctober 31, 1912. Serial No. 728,778.
gioie.
the following is a specification.-v
My invention relates to an improved pencil Sharpener employing a cutter or cutting cylinder'jvhich is mounted on ,an inclined plane within the casing of the device.
pencil Sharpeners of this type theeutterlhas heretofore been so niounted that Whenan old cutter was to be removed and a neiv one inserted. it was necessary to practicallydisasseinble the several parts of the structure.
rlhe primary objectof iny invention is .to 'so iniprovethc. structural details of a pencil Sharpener that the cutter andthe frame supporting the 'saine niayhe rernoved4 without disturbing any of the other parts of the mechanism.` One important ad`vantage o1" this construction is that one ma-` chine may be used for various types of cut,- ters, 2'. e. cutters may be used by which very' sharp points are produced. medium .points are produced or very long drawingr pencil points may be produced, the. operationot removing an old cutter and inserting' a new one being very simple and requiring no niechanical skill.
rPhe preferred einbodiinei'lt of the inven` tion is illustratively exelnplitied in the ac` coinpairvinn' 'drawing` wherein Figure 1 is an appr-onimatcljvr vertical ccn- 'tral section through a pencil sharpener ein` l v bodving inv invention; and Fie. 2 is a detail sectional view on the line` a-b of Fig. 1,
looking in the direction of the arrow.
Referring to thcdrawing by reference characters. 10 denotes a casing having the depending portion 11 in which the drawer 12 for receiving'shavings is mounted, a space 1?, heingleft between the inner part of the casing 10 and the 'drawer 1Q to allow'the shavings to fall into the latter. At o'ne end thecasing is provided with anopening 11: through which the pencils to be.' sharpencd are inserted. 15 is a cover Whiclri'ests loosely on .top of the casing lO. Opposite the opening 14,- the casing 10 is provided' with a bearing 1 5 designed to receive a shaft i thereto.
-idesi-gnated generally as 17 and provided with the operating crank ,18 rigidly attached The shaft 17 is reduced at 19 and atthe. end opposite the crank handle 18 is again reduced and formed with an aperture Q0 for a purpose to be described. The crank shaft 17 is 'designed to engage a'nd rotate the cutting,l cylinder and the frame in which the latter isnmunted, and to this end the following; construction is provided.
'Q1' is a frame hating one end abutting the frontfxvalltf the casing- 10 and its opposite end formed into a Substantially goose-neck member 22 through which a pin 23 passes, said pin engagingv the aperture. 20 in the end oI'the crank shaft 17.,l hy which arrangearnent thefrariiel and the 'shaft 17 are removably connected together. The 'trarne 21 is provided ivith oppogitely disposed depending inclined hearing' lugs 24 in which the cuttinp; c vlinder' Q51 is revoluhly mounted.' Revolution of the, Cutting cylinder is eiiected nl v interengagenient ot the lear wheel Q6 carried h v the cutting' cylinder 25, and gear wheel 2T-rigidly fixed to the traine or casing l0. .lt wi'll he apparent thatas the crank handle 1S is turned the 'traine :21 will he turned njitlrit and the ,Qjear QG will engage the lrar 27 whereby the cylinder 25 will he rotated in its bearingv 211. The frame 2l is also provided with an adjust-able stop Q8 the position ot which is adapted to determine the length ot the point.' 'to be made on a lead pencil.
Mounted pivotally ou a stud QS) carried hy the casing' ltl'is a keeper 3G having: ay `central. semi-circular aperture 31. rlhcv purpose of this ,keeper is to prevent lat,- cral or longitudinal shitting of the 'frame 'and its apinutenant parte. the aperture 31 in'the keeperhcing designed to take over the reduced part '19 of the shaft 17.
. `When`itis deeired to disaswei'nhle the parts, itis sinlply necessary to. lift ott the cover 15,-raise thc keeper 30 and then ...pull out thecrank handle 18 and Shaft 17 wherehy the trame'Ql and its cutting cylinder 25 may be lifted out of the casing. To insert a new cutting cylinder. Vthe operation naine-,- diat'ely above described is simply reversed. claim`2. pencil Sharpener len'iloodyingrtherein a .casing having a bearing formed in one Wall fr ng and having a transverse pin-engaging m meej/m.
thereo, a crank shaft revolubl mounted in l for revolving said crank shaft and the parts said bearing and. having a re uced portion 1. connected thereto. 10 intermediate its ends, and an aperture at the i n testimony whereof I have afxed my inner end thereof, a frame Within said east signature in presence 'of-two Witnesses.
