To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that l, HARRY D. VVnJsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jackson, in the county of Jackson and State of lllichigan, have-invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Cutters, of which the following is a specification. i
The object of my invention is the provi sion of a cutter which especially shall be adapted for cutting cabbages into'long thin, strips, one of the steps necessar in the manufacture of sauer-kraut, but which may be used for cutting other vegetables or other materials when so desired.
My invention consists in certain novelties of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
The accompanying drawings illustrate one example of the physical embodiment of the invention constructed according to the best mode I have so far devised for the practical application of the principle. V

In the di'awings- Fig. 1 shows'only one hopper or feeding device located at one side of the bridge tree, the other one of similar construction'being oppositely disposed and the larger end supported by the rod 45 and the smaller end by the lugs 42, the said hop I being removed to show the top surface of the disk. However, one hopper only may be used-when so desired.
The modus operandi is as follows: 'Rotary motion is imparted to the horizontal shaft,

The cabbages are fed into the larger open end of a hopper, which is suspended withv its edges. close to the surface of the disk, but not in contact therewith, and .as parts of the cabbages are removed by the knives the remaining portions are advanced toward the shallower part of the hopper. In case of a large cabbage or other material being introduced into the hopper the operator can liftthe funnel or hopper against the pressure of the spring on the rod and then release it and allow it to fall under the pressure of the spring and the action of gravity.
The cut cabbage or other material falls into a receptacle beneath the housing. The under beveled surfaces 26 of the spokes provide open spaces or throats for the cut material those shown in connection with the disk-.' Further, it will be observed that the beveled edge of each cover plate is upon the top surface thereof when in position and ends back of the cutting edge of a knife, so there are no projections to engage the vegetables being cut, as the plates slide beneath them. 'The top of the cutter thus consists of I a series of plain surfaces, one edge of each consisting of a knife-edge and the opposite edge slightly extendedbeneath and out of contact with the knife edge at the rear.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings it will be clear that I have produced a'cutter which will'cut cabbages into long thin strips, a form especially desirable for the manufacture oftin cabbages, etc., of a base; a housing; a
